How do you feel Calvin did in his first year and was he worth the high pick? I am not bashing Pace, just curious how he did.

Thanks,
Matt

Pace?

C+

He is definately an NFL caliber player.

With that said...we should have drafted Suggs.

I watched him a lot, especially the last half of the season. If you grade him on performance, not potential

D-

He gets a passing grade solely for holding up the entire season and playing with effort.

Now, grade with potential

C+

A solid D+. He played the run relatively well, but anyone that says he showed promise rushing the passer is either lying or selling something.

Considering his draft position (1st rd) and the job he was supposed to fill (rushing the passer) I give him an I (incomplete). If this was his second year I would give him an F.

He needs to learn to play the run on the way to the QB. If all he does is play the run well then he is not fully accomplishing his role.

I really don't know how to feel about Pace. We haven't had a good D line in a long time.

Is it the players or the coaching.
Do we have bad players or good players with poor technique in a bad defensive scheme? Maybe a combo of both

His play has been like Vanden Bosch before him. Very solid against the run, with the ability to move laterally very well and shed blocks laterally and backwards to make the tackle. His problem is he lacks elusiveness and pass rush moves to get himself upfield. Funny thing is, he showed moves upon moves in the preseason and was consistently beating the opposing LT. When the season started, it all changed and he rarely tried any solid pass rush techniques.

Bottom line, he's better than this. I feel he was hindered by a poor coaching staff. A new coach next year should help him develop.

I have an article about this folks, but it will have to wait until Skorp gets out of ICU.

Given what I have to say it needs his final blessing before publishing

Pace,

Early he showed well against the run and could pressure the QB. Somewhere in the middle of the season he tweaked his groin and virtually disappeared. Hopefully his problems were due to the injuring and he will come back strong next year.

He played like you would expect a mid- first round rookie to play. I think he can still be a quality DE.

People have whined about us trading down in the draft and getting Pace instead of Suggs. I still think we did the right thing here. Sure, Suggs won Defensive Rookie of the Year and had double digit sacks. But the guy we ended up with after drafting Pace would not have been ours if we didn't draft Johnson and Pace when we did. Boldin would not have been on our list until the third round and he probably would have been gone by then. So, I will gladly take the Offensive Rookie of the Year, Johnson who has shown progress, and Pace since he has shown he can play at this level. Hopefully now that Joe Green is gone, our D Line will get some real coaching and we will be able to pressure the QB more.

Just my two cents.

I think Pace's performance is all coaching. If you look at Darwin Walker and Mario Fatafehi they are both playing well and were drafted in the 3rd round or later. They are making an impact on their respective teams yet we deemed them cutable, and did so. Better coaching will take Pace and others to their potential. Greene is not the best DLine coach in the league--far from it. He stunts growth--pun intended. LOL

That's why I gave him a C+.

Should I give him an F because he was not REALLY a first round quality pick?

It's not his fault that we're stupid.

Suggs was a first round pick and we blew it.

With that said I still like Pace and would say that he will at least be a C+ pro....can we get a coach who can take him to B--?

I hope so.

Here we go again! :D

I would give him a C grade for the way he played th run well and had some early success getting in the back field against San Fran and GB. However he did not display great pass rushing moves nor did he have many sacks (1)

Now on a qualified grade I would give him a solid "B"

The reasons:

1. PLayed out of position all year
2. Thrown into the starting lineup prematurely
3. PLayed on a bad D-Line where no one else made any playes either.
4. No Coaching
5. Stats wise played as well as anyone taken BEFORE him in the draft on the D-Line (Williams excluded)

I find it amazing that everyone on this baord is jumping on pace playing porrly yet no one is saying a word about Dennis Johnson (1 more year of playing time, same stats) Wendell Bryant (did nothing all year) and Marcus Bell/Ruseell Davis (who probably shouldnt be starting in the NFL)

We will have to wait until next year to see if playing his right position, with hoepfully more talent around him and better coaching will bring out his true ability

Yeah, see, but based on that, he should receive a D, not a C. A C is commonly known as the 'average' grade. Well, he played about average on the run (he played well, but not like a 'monster'), but he played below average for a starting DE against the pass. Hence, not quite a C.

As to the rest? IMO, you cannot grade him any higher for circumstance because we just can't know if better circumstances will give him the chance to succeed or not. He may, or he may not. That will have to be a retroactive grade, IMO, because there's clearly not enough info to give him a grade based upon circumstances.

i expect ANY DE drafted ANYWHERE that got as much playing time as did pace to rack up more than one measly sack. even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

he did NOT play as a mid-first round pick is expected to play.

D.

Worthwhile point.

Pending any future turnaround, I can best sum up my feelings about Pace as "disappointed but hopeful."

I give a C and improving. When your team is playing lousy you tend to look lousy and not play up to your potential. When you are 50 points behind in a game it is hard to motivate yourself.
