Step one includes eating more meat and fish. As a vegetarian, I am totally out.

No. I had thought it might come off as that though. I chose cattle instead of cows as a hope to ease that a bit :p

Lol. I knew what you meant. Still was funny.

Quick story. Once I lived in North Wales, PA. My sis and two cousins rode the train in to visit me. The conductor came into their car (they were the only ones in there at the time) and yelled "Wales!" right next to them. They laughed and responded "Pigs!" "Elephants!" It's a running joke now.

This is like the Zone diet mega-simplified and written with a -- gasp -- sense of humor. I buy it about 75%, which is pretty good. Decades ago I discovered that the single best thing I could do for myself was to eat a chunk of protein to start the day. Long before Zone diet or Adkins or Mediterranean diet or glycemic index -- my grad school minor was endocrinology, and the relative merits of protein and fats, and the demerits of simple carbs, was obvious to anyone who just studied the way the body works, even then.

But of course this paleo diet is simple-minded, starting with historical facts. This is total grunting-hunter-macho bullsheet, ignoring the reality that from the time we were an identifiable species, fully half the population (females and older children) spent all the daylight hours foraging for fruit, starchy roots, large-seeded grains and nuts, grubs and bugs, bird and lizard eggs, and tasty greens. The hunters often only brought back a squirrel or two -- or neighbor on a spear, to be brutal about it.

Humans weren't evolved as primary predators - we were always both prey and predator, moreso than most animals. Primates have always eaten leafy greens, berries, nuts, tubers, fruit, ripe whole grains, crustaceans, grubs and insects (extremely high in B vitamins, omega fatty acids, and proteins). Fatty meat for our tribe has been the goal, the treat, but not the usual meal.

Besides that little quibble, is one other -- give up my homemade ciabatta and my good wine? NFW. sorry. Unwilling.

I look at it with the point of view that we, as a society eat way too much proceeded foods, too much dairy, and the media and BigHealth have people in a hysteria. If I can move away from eating too much processed garbage and move back towards more grass-fed meat, more vegatables and fruit, all the better. After a week very little grains, dairy or added sugar, I am feeling way better than I ever did on any low fat, lowcal, low carb diet that left me hungry and malnourished.

Just yesterday I asked a clerk at traders Joe which of their meats were grassfed. They showed me a list of meats fed with "corn, soy, wheat.". Only about 4 things were grassfed. I think that is telling.

I say eat your ciabatta and drink your wine. No problem at all. One of the things I like about paleo principles are how they can be adapted to personal needs.

Peace.

Zenny, very little, if any, of the foraged items you listed would not be paleo, in my opinion. :). If the large seeded grains didnt require complex preparation, I think they would be paleo.

Definitely agree that overall we eat way too much processed crap. I love going out into my little garden (which I did this morning) and making myself something to eat. It's nice to know that, in this case, I control where my food comes from.

I would also submit that we have have animal fats in our diet much longer that we have had all the artificial "fat-free" garbanzo stuff.

Saturated fat does not cause heart disease or cancer and does not make you fat. To the contrary, the hormonal satiety and lack of insulin response from eating fats is the key to weight optimization and avoiding the diseases of civilization caused by hyperinsulinemia and high blood glucose levels - diabetes, metabolic syndrome, degenerative diseases like alzheimer dementia, and many of the commonest cancers.

I find this to be very interesting.
