this movie is getting panned by a majority of the critics. 37% on rotten tomatoes. that ain't good.
If they went with the story the show once upon a time did with pan it would be interesting but this not so much.

Ugh, seriously? This story may well end up not very good, but Once Upon A Time has very little good about it.
I have to eat a HUGE serving of crow on this one. I had such high hopes, but there was a lot wrong with this movie.
As I suspected, Garrett Hedlund was absolutely atrocious in this film. The kid and Hugh Jackman/Rooney Mara were fine, but halfway through the film I realized one thing, Joe Wright is a terrible director. Perhaps Atonement and Hanna were mirages, buoyed by such great actors, they didn't need a ton of direction. I just can't see how ANYONE, let alone a professional working director, could look at Hedlund's performance, specially line delivery, and not change it. But then again, if you watch a completely different movie like Angelina Jolie's Unbroken, Hedlund's delivery is nearly identical. Very strange considering he was MUCH better in Friday Night Lights when he was playing a high school senior. The script didn't help either--it's unfortunately that the kid had to really explain things to the audience when there was no need to.
The movie had all sorts of potential, they just never realized it. There were several times I had thought of different things they could have done to improve the story. And as for the story itself--it didn't make a lot of sense. Tinkerbell didn't even show up until the very end, and they basically just pointed her out, gave her a name, and then you didn't hear from her again. There was no explanation about Blackbeard, and very little with Hook.
Hook's attempted "romance" with Tiger Lily was pretty awful and almost nonexistant as well.
And don't get me started with the ending. If you go into this hoping to see how the rivalry of Pan and Hook started, you'll be sorely disappointed. You don't even get to see how Hook loses his hand! The crocodile makes a small appearance in the middle of the film and then disappears after the characters are saved by mermaids. And no mention of "never growing up." They even have the famous line in the movie spoken by Hook of all people, and he says it wrong."Second Star to the right, and straight on til morning" omitted the word "star".
Just a disaster all around. And not a straight disaster that couldn't have been saved, but one that could have been great. And that somehow made it worse.
I'm sorry you were disappointed I know you were looking forward to this one. That's always a bummer I have been let down by several movies lately as well.
The family and I went to see this. I am sorry but it didn't deserve all the bad reviews it received. Yes the movie had problems but I have seen much much much worse dreg this year than this film.
I for one am not down as much on Hedlund as Chap. I thought he did just fine in this movie. In fact, he provided some of films best moments IMO. The biggest problem as Chap pointed out was that you didn't get much explanation for characters like Blackbeard for example. Also, they vaguely danced around Hooks origin as well.
Also, the movie relied to heavily on CGI for spectacle. Some of the FX were fantastic but totally unnecessary. For example, when telling the backstory of Pan's mother and Blackbeard's it's sort of a CGI mess that would have been much better using live action.
Also, like Chap, I was a bit disappointed the movie never bridged the gap between Pan and hook and how they went from where they are in this movie to becoming bitter rivals. I too thought that we would get that.
Overall..I thought the movie had a sound concept but definitely a flawed execution. The movie did have some good acting IMO and like I said some of the FX were great. Bottom line is the family really enjoyed this flawed movie. Was it great? No but was it as bad as the reviews...I don't think so.
At the end of the day if the family enjoyed it, it's not a waste of my dollar.
