CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The Carolina Panthers have released disappointing quarterback David Carr and have come to terms with receiver Muhsin Muhammad.
Carr was let go a year after he signed a two-year, $6 million deal with the Panthers following a five-year stint as a starter in Houston. Carr struggled so badly when he took over for the injured Jake Delhomme last season that he was eventually demoted to third-string.
Carr leaves Carolina as Muhammad prepares for his second stint with the franchise.
Muhammad was expected to sign his contract later Wednesday, a week after he was released by the Chicago Bears.
Muhammad spent nine seasons with Carolina before being released in a salary-cap move after the 2004 season.

Carr is sort of a Bakersfield guy(although he never gives any love like Joey Porter does) so I feel kind of bad that he's on an express elevator from the penthouse(1st overall pick) to the outhouse(cut by QB starved Carolina). My early prediction...he goes to SF. Martz talked him up quite a bit a few years ago.

I loved Bill Simmons' take on Carr toward the end of last season:

THE PROVERBIAL F-MINUS
David Carr
The perfect storm of QB crappiness: Artificially heightened expectations for no good reason (the fact an NFL team once made the mistake of drafting him first overall); no discernable talents for the position unless you call "holding the ball too long" a talent; an unparalleled, jeffgeorgian ability to suck the life out of anyone who plays with him; and if that's not enough, every time he takes off his helmet, he looks like he's posing for the June 1983 cover of Tiger Beat. When Carr is playing for your favorite NFL team, you're constantly disappointed/enraged/frustrated/disgusted, only deep down, you're telling yourself, "Hey, he was the No. 1 pick, maybe he can turn it around." So even though he's better than the guys from the "No-Week Wonders" list, at least with those guys, you have no expectations going in. Carr's suckitude is crueler and more complicated. That's why he's last on the Powerless List.

I hoped the Cards might get Carr, but he's been a total disaster in the NFL. Just terrible. He's so bad that even has bad as Matt Schaub was last year, you don't hear about what a terrible deal the Texans made in getting him because it's still better than dealing with Carr.

Carr is probably a lost cause and I certainly thought he was better than what he showed in Carolina last year. The Texans have done well the last couple of years going from Carr/Banks to Schaub/Sage.

Carr and Banks. Talk about two of the most shell-shocked QB's that I've ever seen. Both of them were both thrown to the wolves way too early and it looks like neither will recover. Carolina mystifies me. Is Delhomme that good or is every backup they've ever had that bad?

On Carr, it spoke volumes, to me, when he openly welcomed a chance to sit on the bench in Carolina. You gotta at least act like you want to be a starter. His physical talent makes me think he might have a tiny, tiny chance of someday making it but it seems very doubtful at this point.

CARR is awful! i just thought it was because of the talent in houston,(O-LINE)/no running game. but he's actually what makes all that bad, holds the ball, defense no respect for his deep ball plays up against the run! it was awful our (panthers) undrafted QB did WAYYYY!!! better.

delhomme is pretty solid, gets ball off to open reciever, controls game with great leadership and poise. our backups usually suck! haha (we don't plan on using them)

I don't necessarily disagree with you about Carr but it's still surprising that he regressed so much, so quickly. He had to have had at least comparable talent around him in Carolina compared to Houston and he didn't even look remotely like his days with the Texans. I think he's damaged goods at this point. Not sure how he was between the ears in college but he's not as good now as he was when he was drafted.
