Patrick Peterson: I’ll show I’m the best in the NFL against Megatron

Although Lions-Cardinals is nowhere near the NFL’s best game on Sunday, that game will feature one of the NFL’s best individual matchups when Lions receiver Calvin Johnson is covered by Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson.

In fact, to hear Peterson tell it, the only better individual matchup in all the NFL than Peterson vs. Megatron is the one that happens in Cardinals practice, when Peterson covers teammate Larry Fitzgerald.

I think I am the best cornerback in the league right now,” Peterson told reporters in a conference call this week. “You know, me and Calvin, we’re the same caliber players.”

But Peterson doesn’t consider Johnson the best receiver in the league right now.

He’s second in my book behind Larry,” Peterson said.

The Cardinals will surely not leave Peterson one-on-one with Johnson all day on Sunday, but that’s what Peterson says he wants.

“I would like to go one-on-one as much as I can,” Peterson said.

Peterson is one of the NFL’s best young players, but when it comes to going one-on-one against Megatron, he may want to be careful what he wishes for.

IMO he should let his play do the talking. The memory of Crabtree schooling him is too fresh in my mind for this kind of talk.

It's good to have plenty of confidence, it's not necessarily good to give an opponent any more motivation than they already have.

Megatron is going to have PP for lunch and dinner. I will say that Johnson will burn him at least once for a long TD and have 6-8 catches for 125-150 yds. PP should keep that hole in his face shut.

I love confidence, this will motivate megaton but it will also motivate peterson more to play his best game. Cant wait to watch it live and be able to see everything going on this weekend.

Normally I would agree he needs to shut up. But how this season is and the negativity in the air. I think this gives Peterson and the entire team something to get motivated for. Screw it, talk some trash and make a game out of it.

Amen. I can't remember a single Cardinals game that I wanted to watch less than this one. At least this creates a point of interest. Even if this matchup and the whole game turns out to be a debacle. Which seems likely.

All mouth. ****** hasn't shown squat this year. Living off last year's laurels.

His PR duties got much worse but he has been a better corner than he was last year, his picks have been outstanding and he has been a bright spot for the D. IMO you are incorrect. He is not the best in the league like he gets credit for but he has been very good. People seem to forget a bunch of our losses have come to QBs with less than 10 completions, PP is a big part of that.

Show us you can field a punt.

Heh. His coverage has gotten better this season while his punt returning has worsened.

I still think we should double team Johnson heavily though particularly given that the Lions don't have a strong #2 wide receiver.

I'd be happy if he could put on his big boy pants, and show us he knows how to set his own range.

Random scrub Announcer: "See what Jay Feely is doing here?.. He is telling Peterson exactly where to fumble the ball away."

Feely didnt do that last year, did he?

Glad I wont hear announcers showing feely doing that this game.

Yo feely, help me out, this math stuff is hard.

What a ridiculous thing to say, it is hard enough to cover a guy 6'5" with 4.35 speed, now just give him some extra motivation..And while any comparison of one of our QBs to Stafford is a joke, to say Fitz is better in a year where he has 900 less than yards is just plain stupid.

I totally agree. Sometimes in order for players to take the next step they have to create pressure and challenging situations even when they aren't neceesarily there. I would love to see Peterson locked on Calvin all game and see how it plays out. It would end up being a great barometer for Peterson to measure how he stacks up against the best in the NFL.

But when they are averaging over 20+ yds a completion you don't need to throw the ball a lot.

Is that on PP or big plays just happen in some games? PP has been good for us and easily our #1 corner even with the great plays toler has made. If anything, Gay has sucked.

The best corner in the league right now is whoever is covering our receivers. They allow zero completions...

Wow, big words. Promising St.Patricks Day during a 10 game skid? Against Mega? Maybe homie is reading the Card sites, realized only about half the fanbase is going to show up, and is trying to drum up something. That's cool that he has Larry ahead of Mega, but Mega has a QB, so it aint going to be like covering Larry is practice.

I hope PP is up to it, especially after this whole "I'm bad" song he is bumping. I just hope we don't hear the yellowbook song on Sunday, used, used, this book, gets used. I think the kid has a shot to make some plays but not as much when he is one on one with Megatron.

Part of a talented athlete's development as a pro is learning to keep his mouth shut.

It's as important on the road to stardom as learning how to turn & go or high-pointing the ball properly.

you really think so? According to PFF, he's #5 in the NFL
https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/10/25/snapshot-nfl-passer-rating-allowed-cornerbacks/

comparing individual stats between those top 4 (Webb only played 6 games) he is #1 in INTs, #3 in tackles (#1 in solo tackles), he was bottom of the list for PDs though. All in all though, I'd say I'm far from unimpressed considering he's only in his second year. I also don't think he had an "laurels" to rest on last year as a cornerback. Obviously an electric punt returner, but I thought he struggled on D

and I don't consider what he said "trash-talk" at all. If anything, it came off as praise to me. Saying Megatron is the best WR aside from his friend and teammate (no-brainer) and he can't wait to test himself against him

(a funny fact I noticed when looking at his stats is that he couldn't even go celebrate with a drink when he was drafted #5 overall, lol)

He's significantly improved as a CB. He just hasn't done it as a PR because nobody kicks to him anymore.
