I don't hate Belichick nor the Pats. I think what they've accomplished in this era of Free Agency is more amazing that what any other dynasty previously accomplished....
As for the "cheating" stuff... I'll wait to see how this plays out before rendering an opinion. I have a hard time understanding how someone "taping" the Jets signals can decode the various signals, often times being delivered by several different people so as to throw off the opponent, then relay that info to whomever it is within the Pats org who can then relay them to the proper Pats coordinator, who can then instruct his team on the proper play call - all within 30 Seconds... Just doesn't seem feasible to me...

This is stuupid. Just because you have a signal doesnt mean you can decipher it.

On top of that the last I checked teams used to throw out signals all day long and they can be seen on TV and fro the other sideline. So who really gives a rats azz?

Never liked the Patriots because of Belichick. His behavior at San Diego last year after the playoff game was typical.

Do all good NFL coaches cheat, as some of you have implied? I don't believe it for one minute.

not believing it is akin to thinking that no colleges pay their athletes. all div 1 programs cheat. it's inherent in the system.

Agreed - it's in plain sight and part of the game. If the Pats want to dedicate a fa guy to decoding other team's signals, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Also, it carries a risk. The coach could set up a play where he signals a run, but the QB and coach have already agreed on a pass - a couple of misinterpreted signals would make the other team think twice about basing their defensive calls on the other team's signals.

I believe the Cards transmit their play calls in Navajo, so we don't need to worry about them being stolen.

They play the Jets twice a year, every year. I'm going to guess that recording the signals would be useful for subsequent games...

And Belichick, he ought to coach the Donkeys, because he certainly is a jack*ss!

Bingo. Or as Peyton Manning says in the following story, "be careful of what you think you know."

"The classic was when we're playing Cleveland and they got [former Colts backup quarterback and offensive assistant] Kelly Holcomb and Bruce Arians. It's Tony Dungy's first year, maybe 2002. So the Browns grill Holcomb all week, 'You got to give us something' and he says, 'I'm telling you, Peyton's going to change it up. He knows I'm here, he's going to give you a dummy audible early. I'm telling you, he's not stupid. So, just play your keys.'

"They're up 16-3, I think, at the half," said Manning. "Second half, we get a good drive going and it's fourth-and-three. So we run our bread and butter play, a little five-yard under route. Well, I signal the play and Holcomb--it's the same signal--so he says, 'Ah, now I'm going to help them.' So he says, 'They're running the five-yard under play! Five-yard under play!"

"And so you can see it on the film--they're going, 'Watch the slants, watch the slants.' So they load up, all inside technique, and they go into a man defense. Well, I see this and I see the defenders all change up--that's the thing about the no-huddle, I can see this--and I kept the receivers doing the same thing and I checked to a zone running play and it's only six guys who gotta know--the linemen and the back [James Mungro]. And he goes 29 yards untouched for a touchdown. And so their guys go to Holcomb, all pissed off, 'So, they're running a slant, huh? Thanks a freaking lot, Holcomb.'

So, maybe that sums it up right there, be careful of what you think you know.''

Like 'em or not, the Patriots are the gold standard. Belicheck may be a jerk, but he can flat-out coach. And Tom Brady will be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer.

It's common in the NFL to change your signals the 2nd time around. The Jets would not be using the signals the "jack*ss" supposedly taped the first time around...

That doesn't make him any less of one! :wink2:

No doubt - and I am not at all defending the guy... He seems like a very tough, immensely focused and unforgiving dude... Yet, he knows how to coach and win. I respect that... And, when you hear his players speak about him (including malcontents like Corey Dillon), they all appear to love playing for him.
His job is certainly not to get his opponents or fans of his opponents to like him... Seems to me he knows very well what his job is and seems to be doing it quite well...

Not if you're the Cardinals... they didn't change their audible signals for over 4 years until a former player figured this out and they hammered us

The NFL has determined that the Patriots were indeed cheating. Goodell is considering docking them "multiple draft picks".

Stay tuned.

Couple of items I heard on the radio this morning.

1. Pats have been warned about this practice in the form of a letter twice already.
2. The whole league received a stern warning letter last year from Goodel concerning this practice.
3. Pats HC was supposed to meet with Goodel in New York this morning to discuss this issue and punishment will come after that.

I say they punish them by sending us the LB that was supposed to sign with us, Roosevelt Colvin, and they have to give us back the wasted 6th rounder we spent on Gorin. They also have to give us their 1st rounder in 2008 just to make sure they get the message.

That will show them.

Makes you wonder how high the picks will be for punishment. Do they take away a 1st rounder + to send a message?

According to ESPNews, Goodell has determined that the Pats did break the rules and will be stripped of multiple picks for the upcoming draft.

Who cares. The Pats dont even really need them. They are the premier place to go in FA. They make great trades. They will be SB champs again.

I don't think they will be. I predict they lose in the divisional round.

Patriots | Goodell determines team broke rules
Tue, 11 Sep 2007 14:40:34 -0700

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN, reports NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined the New England Patriots violated league rules when a team employee videotaped defensive signals by New York Jets coaches, according to sources. Goodell is considering several sanctions including taking away "multiple draft picks" because they were warned by Goodell at the beginning of the season. The Patriots will be allowed to present their case by the end of the week, likely via telephone. The league is also looking into irregularities in the number of radio frequencies the team used during Sunday's game. Goodell is expected to make a official decision by Friday, Sept. 14.

Apperently they are also looking into the Pats stealing radio signals from opposing teams as well. Also according to this taking away draft picks is just one of the items being considered. What else can be considered? Lower their cap max, suspending them from calling any free agents the first day of free agency? Honestly what can the league do under league rules, how far can they go?

I think it will be a huge punishment considering Goodell already warned them the beginning of the season and Goodell does not like be lied to or not being listened to.

Make Belichick dress like an actual HC and not a homeless person; sentence him to wearing Mike Nolan-esque suits!

I think they do.

This whole offseason and this move smacks of desperation up in Pats land. The Colts and Chargers aren't going to fall off of a cliff anytime soon in terms of talent. If Belicheck can't win it this year, or maybe next, it will be time to rebuild.

I agree to a point--they are aging in certain positions.

But I don't get why he cheated against the Jets and the Packers...you'd think they would win those easily.

Or maybe this is how they always seem to know how to scheme.

What if (irresponsible rumor-mongering) they also had the frequency to intercept the radio signal to the offensive plays too? Belichick's defensive genius is explained--he never did display his brilliance at Cleveland.

Hmmmm. The veil is torn!

Why did Nixon cheat against McGovern? He had no chance of losing that election.

It's a form of paranoia.

In a strange twist of events, the sole punishment meeted out to the Patriots for cheating by using video cameras to steal the Jets signals was in the form of being granted an NFL Championship formerly held by the Cardinals and disputed by Pottsville.

Coach Belichick is currently under suicide watch and could not be reached for comment.

Take a little further.

Why do his assistants go on to be duds. Why do free agents that leave NE go on to be duds and other players go to the Pats to have their best years. Why do their draft picks always work out for the most part.

Consperacy theories at its finest. I like this stuff.

I have to go the black helicopter is following me again.
