Defensive tackle Milton Williams was undoubtedly one of the biggest free agent signings for the New England Patriots.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss offered his opinion on how Williams might be utilized in Patriots coach Mike Vrabel's defense.
Williams recorded four combined tackles, one forced fumble and five sacks in a more limited role last season. However, his role is expected to expand significantly in New England. Reiss pointed to Vrabel's usage of three-time Pro Bowler Jeffery Simmons as the blueprint for Williams.
He wrote:
"The Patriots' vision for how they plan to employ defensive tackle Milton Williams will likely have shades of what Vrabel did with Jeffery Simmons in Tennessee -- moving him all over the line to isolate advantageous matchups."
Versatility will be key in keeping opposing offenses on their toes. The Patriots saw a significant decline in their defensive production last season, particularly in their ability to pressure quarterbacks.
Having a player like Williams who can dominate in the trenches could have an enormous trickle-down effect on the rest of the defensive front.
