NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Patriots are expected to "entertain offers" for Ryan Mallett on the heels of Tom Brady's contract extension.

Arians likes canon arms... Would you rather trade #38 for Mallett (who has reportedly matured under Brady) or draft a QB in the 2nd?

If Tyler Wilson is available in the 2nd Round Cards need to sprint to the podium and pick him. He's the Arkansas QB that should be picked instead of giving up something for Mallet.
Wilson seemed to make the players around him better. I don't recall Mallet doing that.

Mallett definitely made Arkansas better but I like Wilson too, unfortunately he has small hands.

Depends on what is available at 38. But I think he can be had for a 3rd rounder anyway, and that I'd do.

NO......tired of other teams hand me downs. They obviously don't see him as any answer to taking over for Brady one day. Just think about it. Same with Kolb, there is a ***** in the armor.

Why can't we do what all the other champions do, evaluate and find our own guy through the draft one year, even if we have to trade a bundle to move up and get him. Until then, I would rather waste a pick on Geno than on someone another coach has decided doesn't have it.

Brady isn't going anywhere for at least 4 more years...Mallett will be a 7 year back up by then...that's not going to happen.

I am assuming Belichik certainly knows that at Brady's age he will be more susceptible to missing games like all 35-40 yr old QBs do. He isn't going on the assumption that he isn't going to need a QB who can step in for Brady and still keep them on the road to the Super Bowl.

I think he just doesn't see this guy as being the one, or he would keep him, unless it will cost them too much cap wise to do so. Maybe he has his eye on a late round QB to draft that he likes this year. If so, then that also shows his lack of confidence in Mallett.

I think its more about getting value from Mallett before he comes to the end of his rookie deal. As always, caveat emptor.

Why trade a 2nd round pick for a 3rd round QB who has almost never played?

A mature Ryan Mallett would go #1 this year but two years ago he was an immature punk. I'm sure NE will be spreading the word that he's worked hard for 2 years under Brady and grown up.

I still think there should be major questions on his mobility and accuracy.

And Wilson didn't? The Hogs played harder for Wilson than they did Mallet. Check the Arkansas vs Auburn game in 2009 when Wilson came in about the middle of the 2nd Quarter for Mallet who suffered an injury.
As for the size of Wilson's hands, is the ball bigger in The NFL than it is in college? Also if it truly is a concern couldn't he wear gloves ala Kurt Warner?
Wilson is a far better player than Ryan Mallet ever thought about being regardless of the size of his hands.

1. I never called Tyler Wilson the devil
2. As someone who watched pretty much every SEC West game for many years I can say Arkansas playing harder for one player more than the other is rubbish.

Who said Brady will play for another 4 years? He could retire after next year for all we know. What if Brady suffers a serious injury? The Patriots or any other NFL team don't care how long a player is a back up, the only thing they care about is winning. They obviously don't see Mallet as their guy to fill his shoes, otherwise they would keep him.

This is where guys like Tom Moore and Arians come in handy. Let them work him out and see what he has. I can see maybe a third rounder if they like him but he has not shown anything yet because he has not played.

I don't think he'll take a 2nd rounder- but hoyer and Mallet sounds like a good competition to me - over say DA and Hall!

Well the rumor has been floating around they plan to sign Matt Cassel and bring him back to NE if KC dumps him. Which would be likely to happen during FA period before the draft if it were to happen.

If that's what they are targeting, trading Mallet is a no brainer. A talented backup QB is only going to remain on a team as a backup until their rookie deal is up, then they're gone.

Anyone think BB is going to give Mallet a promise to be the replacement for Brady a la Steve Young for Montana? (and gave him over a million a year to do it pre-free agency?). Plus do it this many years early? Young actually had a good deal of experience, it's just most think he only played for the 49ers and only in the NFL.

That doesn't mean I want to trade for Mallet. I wouldn't mind him, but more like a day three pick like a 5th rounder. The reason I wouldn't go higher is that the rumors are that far more experienced players might go for a 3rd or a 4th, so imo Mallet is worth 1-2 rounds less than what the Niners get for Alex Smith.

There is no sure thing and we need production, so I'm all for getting multiple potential guys in here and giving them a shot. Liken it to a Beuerlein/Chandler situation if you want. It's a lot better than Koncussion Kolb/Skeletor backed with an emergency QB of Ryan Lindley. Sure I wouldn't be totally opposed to keeping one of either Hoyer or Lindley, but with a new coach, might as well start fresh and bring in your own three guys. Hell even then Lindley could be a PS QB under such a scenario if it mattered.

I know if I want to sign two FA QB's, those two would be Drew Stanton and Matt Moore.

I know if I want to trade for QB's currently signed it would be Alex Smith.

Hell I wouldn't mind getting into the Matt Cassel sweepstakes if he was cut though we'd never beat out the Patriots to stop them from getting him back. Unless he REALLY wants to start, because he'd actually would have a chance here to do so. Same with Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I also wouldn't mind drafting a guy. Smith, Barkley, Glennon, Manuel, Bray, Renfree, Wilson, Jones, and Nassib.

Wouldn't mind taking a low risk gamble trade on T.J. Yates, Brandon Weeden, or even Joe Webb. This is where I'd put Mallet.

Bottom of the barrel pickups like Jason Campbell a possibility.

We have options. None of them ring franchise QB, but there's some talent to sift through and if given three choices from the above I'm pretty sure Arians can find one that can at least be a serviceable stop gap. If he thinks Mallet is one of those guys, then I'm for it, but lets not give up something on par with an Alex Smith trade, nor sign Mallet to a long 8 figure a year contract. Pick up guys and get them to prove it on short or modest medium length contracts or make them play out their contract. It's not like he's a guy on the team that we know, so it's a different situation in needing a player to play out his contract to find out. Pay more if warranted, don't risk paying out too much for a guy that might be worthless. Letting a guy increase his price by playing good is a lot less of a hit then paying an injury prone lower end starter or backup big money. Perception and looks mean nothing, figure it out before doling it out.

Globe:
According to the Boston Globe's Greg Bedard, the Patriots would not be willing to accept anything less than a second-round pick for Ryan Mallett.
Bedard insists New England would feel just "fine keeping" Mallett after putting "two years in(to) developing him."

Then I'd pass. Every year he gets closer to free agency lowers their leverage. But Arians and Keim may feel differently.

Plus such an absolute is never an absolute. I guarantee you that if BB saw a 2nd round guy he liked fall to the third, he'd be willing to take less than a 2nd rounder if you're on the clock. Hell it could happen even with a 4th if it's near the top of that round after everyone having a night to sleep, regroup, and see what the buzz is on 'best that have fallen' info that floats around in between draft days.

Everyone has a stated starting price, and if true, apparently that's BB for Mallet.
