Right-handed pitcher John Patterson, who had a 3-4 record for the Diamondbacks the past two seasons, has been traded to the Expos left-hander Randy Choate, who was acquired by Montreal in the off season from the Yankees.

I guess that signifies that Choate will be their LH relief specialist, which signifies that either Randolph or Parque may not make the roster....

Also, with Patterson being dealt, it seems very likely that Daigle or Sparks are the favorites to occupy the final spot in the rotation....

Well, DUH - We were rather hoping Sparks and Daigle would fill #4 and #5 spots, since Reynolds is totally unacceptable. On his worst day, Patterson was a better pitcher than Reynolds.

There are still other candidates to fill those final 2 spots and it's too premature to give-up on Reynolds at this point....Plus, I wouldnt be shocked if they're not done dealing anyways....

I know how some of you are more in favor of the Dbacks having the 3rd-5th spot in the rotation only consisting of rookies, but then fail to take in account that they'll be on limited pitch-counts to avoid having them all develop ailing arms that happened with most of the Marlin and Cub pitchers at the beginning of their careers.....Yes, obviously both those teams excelled last year, but the Marlins would have continue to flounder if they didn't fire Jeff Tolberg who abused his pitcher's arm than Jack McKeon who knew how to conserve them...

Man, I thought Patterson looks so promising when he first came up last year...pretty sad to see him dealt...could never really get things together.

Good luck to him!

...yeah a strong #3 and he would be making about 1/4 of what Matt "Ouch my Arm" Mantei is making. My brother could go on a 2 hour rampage about that trade....

I think the pitcher they'll miss the most will be Chris Capuano....I guess they were forced to part w/him out of necessity to get Sexson, but Capuano has some "lights-out stuff".....

I like the trade. It will give guys like Fossum,(when he gets off the DL) Daigle and Aquino a chance to start.

As for Capuano, he did not show much last year. His lost zip on his fastball after the surgery. He was throwing in the 80's. Normally you get your fastball back after a year from TJ surgery but he hadn't yet. I wish Chris well but I don't see him being the pitcher many believe he will.

Capuano did nothing for me, much like Bierbrodt he didn't have an "out" pitch.

Randy has his back door slider, Curt his split finger etc....you need to have that one pitch that keeps guys on their toes to be effective with your other pitches.

I tried to learn how to throw a fork ball and a split finger, but my fingers weren't long enough so I depended on breaking pitches and that is death for a pitcher

True, but I bet he compensated for that w/his "craftiness", but he's the type of pitcher who can be easily be replacable anyways......

I think the reason why he hasnt recovered his velocity since he had Tommy John surgery fast enough is because he was being too careful, but as I mentioned in my last response that he is easily replacable anyways....

The one pitcher I cant wait to see is Rosario, but obviously wont be for another couple years....

Fossum and Lyons both pitched decently for the Red Sox and I hope they finally remain healthy enough to live-up to their potential....I hope Fossum is back by mid-May, he can make an absolute difference in either the rotation or bullpen...

ummmmmm, I have seen Choate pitch and he defines the world totally fungible reliever. If he wasn't a lefty he'd be out of baseball.

IP/ERA's
2000 - 17/4.77
2001 - 48.13.35
2002 - 22.2/6.05
2003 - 3.2/7.36

The reason he only pitched 3.2 innings last year was because the Yankees optioned him down to AAA for most of the year.

I liked this evaluation from Waymore Sports (a good site because it gives transactions and minor league stats:

CAREER POTENTIAL: Barely big-league quality.

I am dissapointed in the trade. Heck, I've been disapointed in everything the Dbacks are doing to the rotation.

Here is what our rotation should look like...

1) RJ
2) Webb
3) Good
4) Randolph
5) Villareal

I would like to see it that.

But instead we have this hunk of crap...

1) RJ
2) Webb
3) Dessens
4) Reynolds
5) Sparks

Come on. 3 of those guys are in their late 30's and early 40's.
I want to see the young guys play. Forget old washed up veterans!

I wanted to see Patterson come in and be the number 4 Starter. But he is traded for a LHP, when we have Fossum (DL) and Randolph. Come on. Let's break Mantei's right arm and see if he can throw harder with his left. (Billy Wagner is a true righty, but messed up right arm and learned to throw with left.) That's just my 2 cents!
