Cheese, I bring this up only because you said that your opinion of him would largely depend on tonight's game. And seeing in that he basically sealed the first Red Sox Wolrd Series in 90 years against the best offensive team in baseball on the road, do you still consider Pedro a small-game pitcher? Personally, I can't wait until the Angels get him in the offseason for a few years of quality starting followed by a few more years of dominant bullpen work.
Homer Simpson said:Back to the Curt vs. Pedro matchup, remember that had it not been for Mariano Rivera's cutter to second and Scott Brosius' failure to throw to first, Curt Schilling would have lost Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. To boot, he would have blown a 7th inning lead and given up the game winning home run on an 0-2 pitch. Not what'd you'd expect of your ace...
Okay, I'm being a bit unfair to Curt here, as he obviously only blew a one-run lead -- albiet to a team that had scored a grand total of 6 runs not off Kim or Lopez -- and the 0-2 pitch was an excellent hit by Soriano and I don't think Curt could have thrown a better pitch. But my point is, you're judging Pedro too harshly without looking at the whole picture.
Besides Pedro's Game 5 performance against a very good Cleveland team in 1999, he also beat the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALCS that year -- the only game the Yankees lost all postseason.
Plus, the game tonight. I love Curt, but Pedro has had a far better career.
