CP is essentially clueless as to how to properly coach our defense in a successful fashion. We finally have the depth to help our weapons on defense succeed, and we finally have a legitimate chance to open it up without getting torched. Instead, our defensive playcalling has been boring, predictable, and clearly not results-oriented. I think I know why, and it is highly disturbing.

I believe CP has seen the talent we do have on defense, is happy with the depth we now have, and is content to rely on that talent to create turnovers and a pass rush. Um, I'm sorry, but though we do have talent, we do NOT have the talent to play man-up defense and prevail. We NEED creativity and aggressiveness. Without it, our defense will not succeed and we will see many more poor performances. I mean, his playcalling was good on several passing plays. What happened on those plays? Pressures and sacks. Does he learn from this and work more to bring pressure? Nope. More 3-man fronts and 4-man pass rushes that even idiots in the stands like me an tell will fail miserably.

Also, CP has yet to show he can actually coach fundamentals. Our tackling remains atrocious. Our discipline is non-existant. Any misdirection or well-run timing play will beat our defense. CP needs to step up his coaching, work the basics, and get this defense together, or it's going to be a looooong season.

We have the personnel to be a really tough defense; sadly, we have the coaching to make this a really predictable and easy-to-beat defense. Get rid of CP, Whis, or force him to change his ENTIRE gameplan. Please, please, for the LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE!!!

I'm beginning to think the same thing...

We have, what, (1) pick so far. PRESSURE = MISTAKES = TURN-OVERS = WINS.. Football is a VERY basic game. Apparently, with our "D" we can hit lights-out but IF we don't get a fumble on the hit, we're screwed because our over-all tackling game-long is atrocious!

I would have been happy to see us atleast try to go after Campbell, rather than sit back and hope he messes up.

(BCS) Bootlegs, Counters, & Screens . We've never stopped them under Clancy. It appears we've gone back to the soft man coverages with our corners. Why do we no longer blitz Adrian Wilson ?

My take is we blitzed all game. The oline picked up every single one. I put the blame ont he players not the coach last Sunday.

Sunday was aggravating but lets not jump to conclusions just yet. The defense is ranked 8th on yards and 5th in points so it's not like they're getting torched. It's worth remembering that Sunday's game might have turned out much different if the Skins hadn't have gotten the ball deep in Cardinal territory after two turnovers.

100% correct. the second series of the game we brought the pressure and it worked, but from there on out...they adjusted and we were over matched

The players need to step up as well. There were a lot of blown coverages and terrible tackling on Sunday. These are supposed professionals. They should have learned to tackle by now.

Did Docket even play on Sunday? The only time I saw him was on that personal foul called on that long TD. It seems like he shows up every 3 games or something.

After 3 games....

our defense is,
8th in total yards, (Bucs 26th, Packers 27th)
11th in passing yards, ( BUcs 27th, Packers 22nd)
14th in rushing yards, ( Bucs 20th, Packers 27th)
9th in sacks, ( Bucs 9th, Packers 7th)
6th in td's allowed, (Bucs 5th, Packers 15th)
and most impotant of all,
4th in points allowed. ( Bucs 9th, Packers 23rd)

That's not the rankings in the NFC. That is the rankings of the entire NFL. Every catagory is above average. I chose to compare us to the Bucs and Packers who are considered to have good defenses and both are 2-1 in first place.

Players miss tackles. Players blow assignments. Coaches call wrong defenses. Players drop would be interceptions, Coaches call for a blitz at the wrong time and don't blitz when we should at times. Players make great plays. Players make not so great plays.
And sometimes the ball bounces 20 feet in the air off your opponents helmet and into a defenders hands.

It's a chess game except the peices are moving all the time. Everything we try to do the other team tries to counteract and vice-versa.

The defense allowed 2 long drives vs the Skins and 2 times the Skins got a gift inside our 30 yards line. HAs this defense played better than it did Sunday? Yes. Does it need to play better than it did Sunday? Undoubtedly. But the same could be said for the offense. Should Haley be fired?

Relax guys. Look around the league. We are not terrible. Nobody needs to be fired.

There were so many missed tackles and half hearted efforts that I KNOW these players are better than.
Part of the blame goes to the coach, but he can't suit up and take the field.
It's like the players reverted to college, which i can't stand BECAUSE of the poor tackling that is rampant on that level.

Just because a player misses a tackle doesn't mean it was a half hearted effort.
Do you really believe we had defensive players just going thru the motions and not giving effort?
You may see that in certain teams late in the season or really bad teams, but I can't agree your assessment of half hearted effort. Nobody wnats to be pointed out in game films as giving aless than all out effort.
Poor technique? Okay. Mental breakdown? Okay, I'll go along with that. Remeber the opposition is trying to excel too. Sometimes you get him, sometimes he gets you. That's why they call it a game.

Maybe you're right.
My feeling is that even a small letdown in effort can have big (negative) results on the field.
I think our D gave their all in SF because they hate them, and they always play hard at home.

Our desire as fans to embrace a winner can skew what we percieve on the field.
Let's face it. As fans, all we want is 3 and out's or a turnover whenever we need it. On offense all we want is a first down every time, a score on every possesion, and no turnovers.

When that doesn't happen we analyze why it didn't happen. A player 2 or 3 yards out of position could be made to look foolish or percieved as not giving a full effort. Kinda like the batter who hits a 1 hopper back to the pitcher and the "effort" he gives running to first base.

I still like Pendy. He runs a pretty complex defense, so I expect the team to get better.

If he's replaced in the offseason (let's be realistic--if he's replaced at all it's not going to be mid-season), then we need to find a 3-4 coordinator because that's the type of personnel we've been building for the last couple of years and likely the type of personnel that's currently being scouted. Rivera is a 4-3/4-6 guy. I can't think of a 3-4 guy out there that's going to come available next year...it'd likely be a coordinator stepping into the role (either from the cards or another 3-4 team...fortunately, there are more and more of them these days).

But, I think that the reason we'll lose Pendergast isn't because he'll be fired, he'll be released from his contract so he can take a head coaching position in 2010.

Why bring up stats when you could simply rely on the amatuer kneejerk opinions of Stout?

Our defense has been just fine this year.

The problem, as I see it, isn't a "poorness" in the head of our DC. No,no, no! It is in misinformation. We leave NO CONFUSION in the opponents heads and heart, this will change.
If I see a "look" from our D, I should NEVER be able to ascertain a play from that formation again. We're, strong, fast, fresh and nasty. The SAME play, should NEVER come out of the SAME look twice. MIS-information from a look, at the maturity level of this D, is THE most single, monumental gift
Am I making sense? Also, C.P.

I met about 30 of Dockett's family members there. as the were sitting at the next section over. The people had Dockett jerseys with Radskin hats. It was disgusting. Sorry abouit the highjacking.

Agreed right now we're too predictable you can tell from formation who's blitzing and who's not and they're picking it up. If that's because of new personnel it surprises me we're not exactly starting a ton of new guys.

I keep hoping when Watson gets back it'll make a huge impact on the run defense and make everything else look better I think right now pendy is having to do things to cover for Watson not being there.

one good thing is we're 2-1 and quite frankly I think we've played 6 good quarters. The Miami game, plus the 2nd half of the 49er game.

We didn't play well or poorly Sunday just average.

This week will be interesting. It seems like, over the past couple of years, whenever the defense has a mediocre game they come back with a good game.

I do think the biggest problem this team has is DEFENSE. If we do not get some we are in for a long season. I do not know if it is the coach or the players. We are not stopping the run and the opposition QB's seem to have to much time to throw. This sets us the DB's for looking bad. Need to figure out what is going on here in a hurry. We are still at a decent 2/1 but that could change in a hurry. The Jets know we are not very good on run stopping so expect them to come out fast on the ground. How many passes did Boldin catch last Sunday? Not many. My mind still is stuck on that game ending 4th and four with under 3 minutes to go and we punt? I will remember that for the rest of the year. I hope Whiz remembers is as well as I do. I think Warner will remember it for some time alsol.

And a few more facts to date, I posted on another thread where someone was comparing us to the Eagles:

Philly-D - has given up 49 points in 3 games

Ariz-D - has given up 47 points in 3 games

Philly gave up 41 points to Dallas.

Dallas was held to 28 points scored by Cleveland - 27 by Green Bay

San Fran scored 13 points at home against Cards. They've scored 64 points in last two games.

Miami scored 10 points against the Cards. They scored 38 yesterday on the road against the vaunted New England Patriots.
