EDITORIAL: Peoria reaping benefits from stadium

Location, location, location. Those are words most real estate agent gets pounded into their thoughts whenever they first begin their careers.

Those words are sweet to Peoria investors' ears today, as a developer in the northern part of the City released information about its plum role in the Arizona Cardinals operation.

Cibola Vista Resort and Spa has struck a deal with the Cardinals to share advertising and hospitality benefits. Once the stadium is up and running at the Loop 101 at the Bethany Home Road alignment, the benefits to all of Peoria could be even greater.

It is fitting that a Peoria business would reap the benefits from the stadium's construction, which is just one and one-half miles south of the City.

It was Peoria's leadership that stepped to the plate when the West Valley was attempting to win the battle for the multipurpose stadium the first time around.

And it was Peoria leadership that led other West Valley cities when it came time to support Glendale's effort to land the stadium within its own corporate limits.

Cibola Vista's spokesperson Jim Danz was excited about his company's development, especially because of its reputed similarity to a West Valley tradition - the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park.

But, now Peoria may be ready to assume an even greater role when it comes to servicing those patrons of the National Football League. The City already has the best access to overnight facilities along the Loop 101, east or west, north or south. The Bell Road/83rd Avenue/Loop 101 intersection is quickly becoming not only the hotel magnet, it also is earning a reputation as the restaurant headquarters for the Northwest Valley.

It is called giving people what they want.

More is on the table in downtown Peoria, which could also experience a surge of interest because of its proximity to the stadium and arena projects in nearby Glendale.

Perhaps it is good that Peoria is proceeding with its downtown revitalization with caution. Without spending a whole lot of its own capital, the City could harvest a lot of revenues just by paying attention and waiting for the right opportunity.

What?
Thank goodness Larue Gates and her shortsighted cronies didn't want no part of that!

When are the reports of increased gang and prostitute activity going to come out? Isn't that what stadiums supposedly attract?

I am happy the stadium is being built in a city that truly wanted and appreciates it. Ribbing the dumba** east valley people that faught so hard to get rid of what was basically a free gift is just to hard to ignore.

LaRue just did not want her view of the trailer next door impeded.

These idiots in Mesa have blown a golden opportunity and people like Gates can take comfort in the fact that their POS town will always be a POS town.

Yes! That pristine view of the new sewer treatment plant and the 101/202 interchange will really pay off someday!

I grew up in Maryvale, spent my 20's in central Phx, since 30 til now (38) been living in Tempe and now Mesa. I'm perfectly happy to caravan with The Rick and meet Sludgegutt for some grillin' and beer swillin' out in the 'Dale 8-10 (or more!) times a year. The heckling is a bit odd to me - WE aren't politicians or big business types - we're fans!

Now that you mentioned it...one of the most unsightly things in the state of arizona is the stretch from ASU to the 101 free way (going along the 202). I know the stadium was not going to be right in this area (but I think it was going on the 202 right west of the 101). Anyway..that area has supposed to have been developed (granted..tempe town lake helped a little)..but I understand some of the hotels and other development has been mostly tabled because the stadium is going to the west valley...

This area will probably remain an eyesore for years...Makes a nice impression of the phoenix area after you drive east out of the airport!

Saw this article in the Peoria Times yesterday. It's great for the area esp where they are going to build it. Friends just moved up that way, 99th and Jomax.. THERE IS NOTHING OUT THERE NOW!!!!!! but....

My business is in downtown Peoria at 85th and Grand and we just lost our lease. We have to move and the rent is soooo BLEEPING high elsewhere.

Peoria rental agent's are counting on the staduim's,so, they are raising rent's to take advantage..
They and every other city are pricing the "mom and pop" stores right out of business. Between competing with the likes of WalMart, now we have to compete with the high cost of rent!!

I can't wait for the staduims to open up . It does bring out good things for us and west Glendale BUT.. the little stores can't compete!!

Just real ticked off... Need some football tonight!!!!! YEAH!!!! and some....

Sorry just venting!!!

The same thing is happening in downtown Glendale. My wife works a little shop down on Glendale (actually it is within spitting distance of the Cards Ticket office), and their rent should be going up in the near future, when it comes time to renew their lease. The shop has been their for 20-30 years.

Hopefully, you can offset the cost of higher rent with additional revenue from increased traffic business from fans, etc. Maybe you will do real well when it's all said and done. If you're a bar or restaraunt, you should make a killing. Check back in later and let us know, I'd be interested. Good luck.
