PEr KDUS update @ 1:20 - ish, we will make a strong play for Mushin Muhammad WHEN Carolina cuts him June 1. They say Carolina chooses to go in a different direction w/Dyson, Proehl, & their young burners.

If we do sign Muhammad there will be a huge battle at the WR postion this summer. There will be something like a dozen guys fighting for just 5-6 spots.

It will look like this

1) Muhammed
2) Bryant Johnson (not going to cut a 1st rounder)
3) Anquan Boldin (not going to cut a 2nd rounder)

and everyone else fighting for 2-3 roster spots

Bryan Gilmore
Jason McAddley
Kevin Kasper
Larry Foster
Jake Soliday
Nate Poole
Esekiel Parker
Reggie Newhouse
Lawerence Hamilton

My prediction of who makes the team if Muhammad is signed:

Muhammad #1
McAddley #2
Gilmore #3
Johnson will backup Muhammad
Boldin will backup McAddley

Foster or Kasper - Back up Gilmore / Special teams (I think this battle comes down to special teams. May keep both.)

If that is the case, and I think it sounds reasonable, how does this group stack-up top to bottom to last year's group?

It doesn't matter the ranking. I think we should steal some Rams alignments and throw some four receiver looks in. Why not? We may not be the most talent WR corp but no one has outstanding third and forth corners anymore. I think that we have enough talent at WR to get some guys open with a four receiver look and a QB with a cannon to get the ball to them.

:)

from everything I've heard in interviews, etc. , I think that is exactly the plan...

Jerry Sullivan has made it clear that he wants a more wide-open offense this season... Whether that is a bunch of pre-season fooey, or not remains to be seen.

Personaly, I would like to see them air it out too. What do we have to loose?

It would certainly be a lot more entertaining than the 3 yards dink/dunk we've grown to love with Plummers arm, because anything down the field looked like it was duck hunting season.

The thing I like more than anything else about Blake is his arm strength, and ability to read defenses. Of course, being able to see Freddie Jones when he is wide-open in the middle of the field won't hurt either... but I'm going off-topic. :)

It depends on whether Boldin continues to improve his straight ahead speed. If he does, I think he'll edge out McAddley or BJ.

In the Kasper vs. Foster battle for #6, the addition of a vet like Muhammed might make Foster less valuable as a veteran component & it will depend what he has left in the tank.

I'm still betting on the Friendly Ghost.

Colvin yes, Holliday, somewhat but not Robinson. Graves had the opportunity to sign him before he went on any other team visits and declined. Robinson was quoted as saying if he was made an offer by the Cards during his first visit he would not have left.

Graves let him go and said the Cards would be in touch after the draft. Robinson went on his visits, saw the Cards draft two WRs in 1st and 2nd rounds and signed with Baltimore.

That was Graves mistake, although I have seen some say Robinson wasn't that good.

Perhaps Philly. They've got a lot of cap space and McNugget could use a nice target.

The Jets could probably use another good WR. The Bengals. He'd make an interesting fit in a place like Denver. Maybe Jacksonville. Miami.

#4 Johnson

Where are you getting this from? Are we going to be using a "Big" formation (2 TE, RB, FB, 1 WR) as our base set? Who will be our "flanker"?

Where does Bryan Gilmore fit in? He's Sully's guy, surely he'll have a place in this offense. Why do you think that Boldin is better/more ready to play/start than Johnson, who's from a better school and was picked three times as high?

Calm down, relax, take a deep breath and count to 10. Yes, I do think Boldin is more ready to start than Johnson because IMO, they are a different type of receiver. Jonhson is a deep threat despite what you may have read. He is a guy who will eventualy be our #1. Boldin is a classic possesion type reciever. Someone who will go over the middle. If we sign Mushy, he wil lbe our #1. Because we have McCaddley who stepped up last year and has been working his ass off all offseason he will be our our #3 WR, the guy backing up Mushy and the guy who stretches the D in a 3 WR set. That leaves Johnson, who may have the most talent our of all our wr's, but he won't start anywhere before midseason unless we have an injury problem like last year.

You apparently didn't understand what I'm talking about. My question is why would you keep your second-best WR (the #2) off the field for 80% of the downs by making him the "slot" WR. The #1 WR is generally known as the primary WR, the #2 WR is the "Flanker" and the #3 as the "Slot WR". Are you saying that you think our second-best WR should play in the slot, and be off the field the rest of the time, are you ranking them according to current level of skill, or what are you saying?
