We had to draft Eli Manning and then trade him for Phillip Rivers.

Otherwise Rivers and BenR would have told us to take a hike and we'd have had to trade for J.P.Losman.
:D LOL. Classic Duckjake. Classic.

I just think that it is a scary prospect to lose out on purpose. It's one think if the team sucks so bad that it just happens. At least there is a silver lining but it seems to be a dangerous precedent to tell the team to lose out. Especially when it hasn't really effected our opportunities.

The season ticket holders from this year and every broker will be dropping their seats. Why? When you can get a seat from a scalper for $10...why pay face value?

Not this season ticket holder. I plan on upgrading, which shouldn't be too hard if people will be dropping their tickets.

Actually, Earthsci, I went back and researched through drafthistory.com and I couldn't really find anywhere that the Cards cost themselves a great player by winning any late season games.

What I did see was what you stated that there were plenty of great picks still available and some really bad breaks with guys they really could have used being selected a pick or two before them.

Like Colt McCoy this past April. That is why I am encouraged by the Cards trading up to get the guys they want. Even if they don't work out.

You know john, I'm not jumping your case but when is the last time that we lost out on a Franchise QB by winning meaningless games?

We have passed on a few good QB in my time but in any case we are in the present and the possibility of losing out on a franchise QB is a very real possibility because we won one two many games. I look at the standings each week and look where we are in relationship to other teams on the bottom. I also look at the bottoms teams schedules and our schedules and try to see just where we might end up drafting. Further, I try to gauge whether the bottom teams will take a QB or even try and trade down even below us. There are a lot of scenarios here and certainly one of them is us missing out on a top three QB. Even further I wonder if the Bidwills would want to have the top pick and select a QB which would cost major dollars? That is here and now. The past is irrelevant.

I hear you and hope all works out for however you want it to. My wish is to draft either Luck, Mallet,or Newton in that order. What ever it takes to reach that position I am in favor of. If that means losing then I am for that as this season is almost over. We are playing for next year and the future. Perhaps for even years to come. I wish this involved winning but in fact it involves losing.

Here are a couple of QBs we missed out on this past 10 yrs:

2004 We drafted Fitz over Phillip Rivers Fitz is great and Rivers is greater
2005 We drafted Rolle over Arron Rogers I did not like this at all
2006 We drafted Leinart over Jay Cutler At the time this looked solid

But we didn't lose out on any of those QBs because we won, it's because we picked that way.

I'm with ya, I would love to have the opportunity to have the # 1 pick but by the time you realize that you are close to that position you are usually too far away to get it. At least this year it happened that way. 2003 is an exception but I'm glad the team had the pride to go out and get a win. In spite of what anyone says, it didn't cost us anything.

Geez, every stinking down year (and there have been a bunch of 'em) we go through this useless discussion about quitting games for the hope of getting something better in the draft

Why don't we just forfeit all of the games each year until we get the #1 picks for every position? Same goofy logic...

I do think that we will be in position for one of those guys. If we aren't it means that Skelton preformed very well and we will be OK without them. Chances are slim that is happening but that would actually be a really good thin. We won't have wasted that draft pick and we can go for another impact player where we need it.

How did we lose out on a franchise QB in 2003? Phillip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger were both available when we drafted.

They sure were and there were a lot of people on this board who were screaming for Big Ben in particular. We also happened to need a QB. We drafted a great player in Fitz but we lost an even greater player in Phillip Rivers. In the past decade we have a won loss record of 62-98 a .388 percentage. We are tied for the 4Th worst record over this period with Oakland. Detroit is by far the worst followed by Cleveland, Texans. The best teams of the decade most of you already know: Colts, New England, Pittsburgh, and the Eagles. What do they have that other teams do not have? I think it is excellent organizations with good decisions from the ownership down to the coaches. I also think that is what we do not have. It all starts at the top and not down at the coaching level. I would guess Mr. Bidwill approves every major decision made on this team. Mr Grave has the title of GM or Special Assistant to the President but he has little decision making authority.

During the Cardinals' 28-year stay in St. Louis, they advanced to the playoffs just three times (1974, 1975 & 1982), never hosting or winning in any appearance. In spite of what was considered lackluster performance in St. Louis, their overall record there, of 187 wins, 202 losses, and 13 ties (.481 winning percentage) is easily the highest winning percentage for any of the three locations that the Cardinals have been associated with.

In 1997? we beat the Falcons in the last game, otherwise we would have had the #1 pick that season.

Actually, I'm glad we won that game otherwise we would have forever been the team that passed on Peyton Manning because the Cards were sold on Jake Plummer.

Cost us? Right on bro. We got Fitz the best receiver in Arizona Cardinal history.

The man who brought us the greatest, but briefest, moment in Cardinal history running down the middle of the field for the go ahead TD in the SB.

A guy who keeps our team from being totally irrelevant. And a tremendous person as well. Couldn't ask for more.
