9. I think one of the most interesting stories to follow over the next few months is the Peyton Manning contract situation. He's entering the final year of his deal with the Colts. He'll look at the inability of the team to build a consistent defense. He'll look at the resources in shaky Indianapolis. He'll look at the shaky ownership. He'll look at the stadium problems there. Perhaps he'll think: Why should I commit to this team for the next eight or 10 years when I have no idea when I'm committing to? Now, Manning will never, ever come out and question any of that publicly. But actions speak louder than words. If the Colts and Manning don't have a deal done by midseason, you know what he's thinking.

Hmm Manning might leave the colts after this year, if the cards are semi-competitive this year could we throw a bunch of $$$ his way and having manning as our QB of the future??? Just a thought.

I'd bet a small fortune he'd be franchised.... BTW, don't we have a QB? We are already looking to "upgrade" over Blake? I like the fiesty QB we have now. Can't we all just give Jeff some love?:D

I would. If he could consistently get us to the playoffs like he has thoroughout his short career, this team would do a lot better.

He's overrated, but at least he's been to the playoffs consistently.

Franchising a QB is suicide you have to pay him a ton of money for the franchise figure and then you have a pissed off QB. Remember this year the franchise figure for Jake was to be even higher than the regular franchise figure(something to do with his last season's salary being higher than the franchise figure I believe) which might be true of Manning as well.

I think the Colts would basically figure out we can't keep him and try to trade him, or franchise him TO trade him(what we didn't do with Boston because of the "spirit" of the rule).

Manning is a great player but I have to admit he's getting very close to "paralysis by analysis" he is so concerned with audibling to avoid running the "wrong" play, that he overthinks.

I'd like to give Blake a bit more time but yeah if Manning were on the open market or the trade market we SHOULD be a player because of our cap room.

It's just excruciating to watch.
He needs to cut down on the hijinx and just play.

The problem is that he's so mechanical, it becomes increasingly easier to defend against him, as evidenced by his rising INT totals each season.

That's why I think we need to avoid Eli like the plague if we have a bad season and end up picking high. Eli is like Peyton except with less physically ability.

It is the opposite of Jake Plummer. One thinks too much and the other doesn't think at all.

Yep. I read somewhere the OC(Tom Moore?) said that a lot of those audibles are "fake" to try and get the defense to move or shift. All fine and dandy but alot of what the defense is doing is "fake" too because they want Manning to run the clock down trying to fool them with his audibles and stuff.

I suppose it gives their defense a longer rest between series but it's gotta drive the rest of the offense nuts in their stance waiting for him to get the damn ball snapped.

Basically his whole idea is he's not looking for the perfect play every snap, he just never wants to run the exact "wrong" play so he's trying to audible out of formations that won't work. Which says to me either whoever calls their plays is an idiot, or Manning is being played by defenses because they simply can't be in the "wrong" formation as much as he makes it seem.

I agree with Ed his INT's are in fact a byproduct of all this teams are now suckering him into plays by showing him something knowing he'll change the play to what THEY want. People keep wanting to blame his picks on Edgerrin James getting hurt but they forget how well Dominic Rhodes played his rookie year after that injury, the picks kept on coming.

If we end up picking high, right now I think we go after Roy Williams.

Oh my, we are already talking about the 2004 draft.

Given our 2003 draft, I'm partial to Lance Mitchell as heir apparent to Ronald McKinnon. After all, we're going to be picking around 17 or 18.

I read on ESPN that good/great centers are made, not drafted. I'd rather develop a secord- or third-round center than draft a center in the first round. Centers are, for the most part, guys that are crafty and experienced (because they do all the blocking assignments at the line), rather than those that are especially physically gifted. Centers almost always have help (because they have to snap the ball and make sure the QB gets it before they can start blocking), so you don't need a bruiser.

Maurice Clarett should be a Top 5 pick next year (Texans?), as long as he doesn't get hurt, so I hope we don't have the chance to take him. I don't think Marcus Vick is draft-eligible until 2005, because of his age (freshman this year?). Clarett will be available in 2004, and I'm sure he'll come out.

Actually kerouac9, I for the most part agree with you. Grutts was a good center and he was a no name out of Central Florida. Then again, Damian Woody was highly touted out of BC. He went to the Pro Bowl. I would love to see Starkey step up. He played decently with the other starters around him. He didn't do as well when they went down. It would just be a shame if we had a weak link on an otherwise strong line.

Clarett turns 20 late October so he won't be draft eligible this year.

I disagree totally on your analysis of Eli Manning. He is more talented physically, but doesn't play as smart as his brother.
