Chris Petersen is headed to Washington after finally being persuaded to leave Boise State.

Petersen agreed to become the Huskies' new football coach on Friday, leaving behind an unprecedented run of success with the Broncos. The Huskies made the announcement Friday morning after Petersen reportedly met with Washington athletic director Scott Woodward on Thursday night in Boise.

The decision was first reported by ESPN. Petersen met with his Boise State players Friday morning before the announcement was made.

''Coach Petersen's success and record are extraordinary, but even more impressive is the man himself,'' Woodward said in a statement released by the school. ''His integrity, work ethic and character make him an outstanding fit and leader of our student-athletes at UW. We are thrilled and proud to call Coach Petersen a Husky.''

Petersen will replace Steve Sarkisian, who went 34-29 in five seasons at Washington before leaving earlier this week to take the job at USC. Petersen was 92-12 in his eight seasons at Boise State, turning the Broncos into a national program with two Fiesta Bowl titles. But he's coming off the worst regular season in his tenure with the Broncos after going 8-4, including a 38-6 loss at Washington in the season opener.

The fact Washington was able to pry Petersen out of Boise can be considered surprising after so many other schools called in the past and were rebuffed by the Broncos coach. He took over for Dan Hawkins in 2006 and turned Boise State into the darling of the BCS.

No... just wouldn't place those two on par with the coaches I mentioned...

Both had great success at prior schools - too early to judge them.

Dykes and McIntyre will be canned in 2-3 years.

Even Whittingham's shelf life in Utah might be short if he continues to produce mediocre teams.

The other nine teams have solid coaching. It'll be hard for one to surface and play in the championship game with everyone cannibalizing each other.

Dykes is in way over his head. MacIntyre has a 4-5 year rebuilding job.

Of course all it takes is finding the right QB and a lot of other issues find a way to disappear.

I like MacIntyre. He worked miracles at SJSU. He inherited a tire fire in Colorado. I would have advised him not to take that job. It's like working for UCLA (passive AD/fan base), just without the inherent local talent.

I'm middle of the road on Peterson, but he took a good job. He knows the region, he doesn't have to rebuild from scratch, and he can hire/keep any assistant he likes. All three of those reasons were pitfalls for him if left BSU. He's never had to build a program himself.

Sad to see him leave Boise, but he helped build a lot of good things here. Wish him the best.

UW definitely upgraded considering Sark was rumored to be on the hot seat. USC really did them a favor and to think Peterson spurned USC only to take the job at UW. Wow.

Peterson may have realized that he couldn't get anything more out of Boise State.

Not so sure PAC 12 has glamor coaches. Just names that people recognize.

Rodriguez bolted W Va for Michigan and was a disaster there.
Mora is an NFL reject.
Riley is very mediocre. Anyone remember his disastrous run with the Chargers?
Helfrich? We shall see when he runs out of Chip's recruits.
Sarkisian probably was on his way out at Washington via termination.
I would give Sonny Dykes another year or two before judging him.
Mike Leach can build that program to the 8-9 win plateau.

I wonder... Did Peterson really turn down USC or play the girlfriend about to be dumped who beat you to the punch? Either way, nice coup for Washington. While I think Sark did a fine job there (he inherited a real dumpster fire when he took over and molded the program nicely), I think both they and USC will get better returns from their investments and both schools will be better off for the hires.

I also like MacIntyre but boy does he have some work ahead of him. While Washington was a dumpster fire when Sark inherited it, Colorado is the house that was in dire need of a wrecking ball.
