"The Arizona Cardinals needed overtime to beat the St. Louis Rams 19-13 Sunday, and you can safely put the name “Patrick Peterson” on the Defensive Rookie of the Year trophy. But we’ll get to that in just a minute, there was actually a pretty good game that took place around the day PP21 had."

Must have missed that one. One of the worst games ever. Two completely incompetent teams going at it. But thanks to PP21 it ended worth an afternoon in front of the old monitor.

The game sucked donkey balls.

PP21 saved the freaking day, and CC got an enormous block, but the overall gameplay was bad. SL had some good clock management that almost beat our asses, while we had crappy playcalling, yet again, and couldn't run the ball against a middling run defense.

Peterson was one of a very few bright spots in what was otherwise a very frustrating day.

He hasn't done anything on defense to warrant DROY. He has, however, earned himself a Pro Bowl spot on Special Teams.

When your star running back only gets 20 yards on 10 carries and never breaks a tackle, you are not going to have a running game. There is a world of difference between S. Jackson and B. Wells.

Peterson is DROY if he realizes he can cover wideouts without having an arm draped all over them at all times. SEC officials are a hell of a lot more lenient about PIs than those from the NFL.

Even if he doesnt win the award, he is going to be a special player throughout his career, both on defense and special teams.

SEC refs let them play. The NFL refs are lenient compared to the PAC12 tho.

Skelton? He had a forgettable game. The last drive was pretty impressive, but other than that, he was horrible.

dream, I disagree BIG TIME with your assessment of Skelton. I realize you're a fan and think like a fan. But, imo, if you would be just a little bit reasonable, you'd realize he had a pretty good game. Consider:
1. This is only his second year and in his rookie year, he got very few regular season reps before being rushed into the starting job.
2. This year he's had no offseason (lockout), and a limited preseason (injury). It was only recently that he moved up to #2 QB.
3. In the Ram game, he was something like 20-35 for 222 yards with one TD and no INT's. He accomplished that with a ZERO run game, and w/o his two best receiving TE's. And b/t/w he surprised the heck out of me with his mobility, and his pocket presence.

All in all, he played much better than we should have expected. JMO.

Overall, I agree...Skelton could have been much worse. His safeties (especially the 2nd one) were frustrating, but he did show a lot more poise than Kolb has all year. I still like Skelton. I think I'd be okay if he wound up being our QB long-term.

Give it time, once he gets hit some more he too may very well get dancing feet. Kolb did okay in the pocket the first two games or so until he got hit so much he became gun shy.

If Skelton is still standing tall in the pocket after 4 games I will give him his due. That being said I see him as the equivalent to Orton. I pretty good QB but one that will probably never take you to the big dance.

Yeah I don't know about Defensive Rookie of Year. What about Rookie Player of Year Who Happens to Play on Defense? Or if they had a Special Teams ROY. Definitely in the running for special teams POY for all players. I don't know who would be ahead of him. Or a pro bowl spot for special teams. I don't know if they have those. Or if they just take the #2-3 pro bowlers and make them play special teams.

Give Skelton credit for this:

Unlike Kolb, Skelton repeatedly stepped up into the pocket to deliver a ball down the field

it seems that little .75 of a second the QB gains by stepping up is the time needed by a WR to come clean deeper on the field

You can tell that after five NFL starts in a season and a half? You should be an NFL talent scout. Teams everywhere would be drooling over your ability to tell them if a quarterback will win them a Super Bowl after only five starts. Come on, you don't actually believe yourself, do you??

Sorry but it's not that difficult to see whether a guy can play after even a couple of games. If it were why would the Cards pay such a huge price if they hadn't made the judgement that Kolb could win them a Super Bowl after only 7 starts spread over 4 years?

Too many people also have the mistaken impression that someone has to be in the profession to know anything about football.

Skelton looked OK, but couldn't keep the drives going when they needed crucial 3rd downs.

It seems to me that Skelton gets rid of the ball a lot quicker. It takes Kolb longer to make a decision where to throw it and he holds onto the ball too long (considering our O line).

Knowing Whiz, I'm sure Kolb will be starting again next Sunday and would have done so regardless of how well Skelton performed.

Do you believe he can? I was completely against Kolb coming here long before the lockout even ended, and I tried to put a positive spin on his performances for as long as possible, but it's just not going to happen anymore. Either you have pocket presence or you don't. It's not just something you learn over time. Sure, he can work on footwork and work on getting the ball out on time (which he almost never does), but if he's skittish in the pocket, that's just how he's going to be. He's like a scared cat back there.

Skelton is unafraid of standing in there and delivering the ball with authority. He even steps up in the pocket and buys himself another half second. He did that more Sunday than Kolb has all season. You've all seen it. Kolb gets antsy and back-pedals, then rolls out of the pocket, usually INTO pressure. No. That's not the mark of a winning quarterback.

John Skelton will be an elite QB in the league, that I guarantee you. And I base that off his entire body of work, not just the Rams game. I've been saying this since the Cardinals drafted him last year. He was the steal of the 2010 draft. You'll all see it soon enough.

Overall I think Skelton did a decent job, going against a decent defense or at least a defense on their way up.
Case in point, here's some numbers from the Saints vs Rams game:

Brees - 30/44 269 yards, 1 TD
Saints TOP - 28:37 vs Rams 31:23
Saints rushing yards - 97 total yards 2 TD's

Skelton - 20/35 222 yards, 1 TD
Cards TOP - 24:59 vs Rams 36:58
Cards rushing yards - abysmal (38 yards? all by Skelton I think)

Am NOT saying Skelton is the next Brees, but I do think even with his mistakes he had a decent game. The throw to Fitz was brilliant.

Depends on your perspective, I guess. If this game was played at Lambeau or Heinz Field in December, it is deemed an instant classic. But in the beautiful desert, in early November, it was apparantly a stinker.

I was entertained by our D all day long. They showed a heart that I thought they had lost long ago.

38 yards was actually Skelton's total, yes. They did run for a whopping 70 total yards, though. And Big John was the leading rusher on the team. Wells had 10 carries for 20 yards, and his longest run was 14. That means he gained 6 yards on his other 9 carries. How awful. I truly believe he needs to sit and get healthy before playing again, that's just going to hurt us.
