For those of you that were arguing what a great tackler and physical player PP was, today only further cemented my argument. He may develop into a great corner, but today he FLAT OUT SUCKED AGAIN. diving at ballcarrier's feet with the lame shoulder tackle (and thereby letting up a first down when he failed to bring gore down), not a single pass defensed. Pathetic.

We may have just used the 5th pick in the draft on a great punt returner. Awesome.

Oh, and nice fumble on that punt return. He ain't shown me bupkus on defense.

you must really hate the guy Ouchie or want to prove something that seems very important to you to win... but I cannot even get close to discussing Peterson and his tackling (which was really bad this game) when it is the god awful QB play we have seen since Warner has retired that buried us today.

Peterson took a step back today, but that is going to happen. He got a bit of an ego over the past couple games, came out cocky, and got worked by Crabtree and Alex Smith. As far as his tackling goes, I thought he would be farther along than he is as well. However, the one thing that I can promise you is that he will get better at it or he won't play. DRC got shipped out for the exact same thing, and Peterson is young enough that the coaches will get in his ear and keep it from being a problem long term.

I expected him to be much more physical. But he is the least of our worries right now.

WOW You cannot even get close to discussing Peterson and his tackling because of the QB play? Last I knew, Peterson was defense and QBs are offensive. Peterson was awful today.

A) where in the title or the substance of this thread did I say today's loss is solely peterson's fault? I swear either some of you have no reading comprehension skills or you cannot concentrate on more than one topic at a time. Sometime in the past two weeks there was a conversation where some people were touting Peterson as a physical tackler. I could concentrate on that aspect of the game today and comment on it whilst concurrently recognizing the awfulness of Skelton. Can the two items not exist at the same time? I chose to start a thread addressing a recent debate on the board, not address "the real reason we lost today."

B) and I don't hate Peterson. What I do hate is a player that comes in with a big rep, gets a big head, and fails to earn his rep. Those lame diving shoulder tackles are for undersized high school defensive backs. Peterson is large and thick for an NFL corner and he brings that weak trash. And the coaching staff apparently continues to allow it. It's one thing if you're Deion sanders or a young DRC who is making plays on the ball, but Peterson hasn't been impressive in that regard either. We've all been excited about his returning skills, but in the scheme of things we should be hoping that's just a bonus from him, not the primary benefit of his play.

C). I'm not saying he has no chance to be good, or even perhaps great. I'm hopeful he becomes our best corner since Aeneas. What I am saying is he stinks on defense right now. Not a ballhawk. Not a shutdown (or even above average) cover guy. Not a good run support guy. And sometimes I see a real lack of effort.

Ouchie, I don't see how you can bag on him for a mistake on a punt. He looks like a natural back there catching them. He's caught all of them. Never mind how dynamic he is when he can take off and run, he's a freak returning punts, imo. As a returner, he's the best one we'd had in years and years.

The thing is---PP has it in him---he is as finely tuned an athlete as there is in the NFL. If he were playing for the Ravens right now---he would be putting on a show. I have no doubt about that. In Arizona, under this take the day off type of HC---the players have figured out that they can even take Sundays off and it won't matter. Peterson's lack of effort and focus today were flat out awful.

This has been a problem in Arizona for a long time. I still think it is because there is no penalty for failure in the AZ. There is a laid back fan base and little if any media pressure. Anyone notice nobody ever interviews Grimm? Maybe they're scared of him.

I think people are missing the key here. SF's offense is run oriented, the problem Peterson has is he gets bored and falls asleep and teams like SF are banking on that. Everytime he backed off SMith threw in front of him essentially saying lets see if you can come up and tackle. Every now and then they took a shot over the top. Once he fell down, once they made the bogus PI call.

But basically they just lulled him to sleep. That's my whole objection to playing our CB's off WR's if theyr'e not good tacklers let them do what they do best.

Peterson was abused all day and his poor tackling rivaled any day I saw with DRC.

That said I still believe he will be good. Let's see how he bounces back next week.

And this is exactly why those sideways passes only work against the Cardinals. Russ, do you think this could also be the reason screens are so effective against Arizona?

Keep in mind that the corner's positioning is almost exclusively his responsibility. A professional CB determines the cushion that he gives on any given play by his coverage assignment, film study, and how his skills match up against the WR. So it is Peterson playing off, not necessarily the scheme that is telling him to.

I was referring to the stiff arm that crabtree threw on PP that knocked him off the tackle. PP made Crabtree look like Bea..... err...... CHRIS Wells.

That was a face mask, he closed his hand and latched on to PP's facemask. Stiffies should be done with an open hand if I recall correctly. Should have been a flag there but it wasn't there...in Frisco. PP got worked today for sure, I hope it makes him a better player.

What? are you saying that all of our cornerbacks for the past 4 years have routinely decided that they needed to give a 10 yard cushion?

A professional CB is told what their responsibilities in coverage are, but they are responsible for positioning themselves presnap. That is what announcers are talking about when they say that a certain player was disguising coverage or that a CB baited a QB. Positional coaches are meant to make cornerbacks comfortable in the scheme so that they can line up in various positions to confuse QB's. However, playing closer to a WR comes with more risk, which is why young or slow CB's generally won't play consistently close to the LOS. With our lack of recent pass rush, I am sure our CB's are very hesitant to play without a cushion because it makes coverage much more difficult, especially if the CB has to cover for an extended amount of time. Also, playing off gives the CB more time to read the play which is why young CB's generally do, and why they are slow to close on shorter routes.

I'm sure that Nmandi and Champ Bailey and (especially) Ronde Barber are included here, but I doubt that rookies and 2nd year undrafted free agents are. Maybe after the snap guys are allowed to use their instincts, but not pre-snap, and not for really young players like the guys we run out.

As to the OP, I think that Peterson is physical in coverage (that's why he's getting PI and holding penalities right now). I don't think that anyone reasonably expected him to be Charles Woodson or Winfield in run support or tackling.

No, young corners are, which is why they tend to play so far off and it can be really frustrating for coaches and fans. They are scared of being burned for a big play or not getting to their assignment so they give a huge cushion to WRs and are slow to come up on quick screens. Teams/Vet QBs really exploit this which is why you saw Crabtree get so much action early and often. Peterson started playing off more because he was slipping and the 49ers really took advantage of it.

I did. Mainly because he played at LSU I thought he'd be a more physical all around player.

More to this, the worst for coaches is on short yardage situations. They stress to young CBs to play up and take away the 3 yard slant for a first down but all young corners can think of is giving up the big touchdown on the slant and go. A huge reason why rookie CB's struggle is because they don't trust their instincts and play too safe.

I thought that he would give more effort tackling, not that he would necessarily be sticking guys like Winfield. I am sure that it will be a point of emphasis in the offseason.
