Welcome to the first edition of top performers for the 2025 spring season.
Each week you’ll find the top athletic performances and results for teams from across Emmet and Charlevoix Counties. Depending on the week and amount of events, top performers may publish twice a week.
For this first edition, the results from athletes come across a scattered first week as teams try to find the days to get their season started, from Monday, April 7 to Saturday, April 12.
There will be no set number of athletes chosen for each sport or team, only notable performances.
Check back later this week for another installment of top performers.
Haden Janes, Petoskey — The Northmen earned wins of 18-5 and 17-6 over Saginaw Heritage over the weekend to get to 4-0. Janes was huge in both, going 4 for 7 with 3 RBIs, 7 runs scored and five steals atop the lineup.
AJ Speigl, Petoskey — Against Heritage, Speigl went 3 for 6 with a pair of triples, 3 RBIs and 4 runs scored. He also struck out two in a scoreless inning.
Drew Olson, Petoskey — Olson went 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs, a double and 3 runs scored in a 17-6 win over Heritage, then doubled and scored two runs in the other win.
Garrett Wodek, Petoskey — Wodek totaled 5 RBIs in a pair of wins over Heritage and 3 total hits. He also earned a four-inning win on the mound.
Max Reynolds, Charlevoix — The Rayders started the season 0-2 with losses to Gladwin (0-4, 2-11), but Reynolds went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored in game two.
Jacob Haley, East Jordan — EJ split with Hillman to begin the season (3-1, 8-11) but Haley began 3 for 3 with two runs scored in the opener. He also doubled and scored twice in the loss.
Brenden Aenis, East Jordan — Aenis went 5 of 9 with 3 doubles, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored as the Red Devils began 1-3 from Thursday to Saturday.
Korbyn Russell, East Jordan — Russell opened the season with 3 1/3 innings and six strikeouts in a win over Hillman, then added a double in a weekend loss.
Ryder Malpass, East Jordan —Malpass had 3 hits, 3 RBIs and a run scored in a 1-3 start for the Red Devils.
Will Paulus, Harbor Light — Paulus earned a season opening victory in a 3-2 final vs. Harbor Springs, striking out six over 3 2/3 innings, with one hit allowed.
Nick Lemieur, Harbor Springs — Lemieur earned his first victory on the mound behind 8 strikeouts in a 9-3 win over Harbor Light Friday. He also had an RBI, run scored and 2 steals.
Ben McShannock, Harbor Springs — McShannock led off and scored 3 runs, had an RBI and stole four bases in a 9-3 win over Harbor Light.
Braylon Currie, Mackinaw City — Mackinaw City started 2-0 with a sweep over Boyne Falls (19-2, 12-8) and Currie went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs in the opener. He also struck out six in three innings.
Wes House, Mackinaw City — House opens the year going 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored, then added another run scored in game two against Boyne Falls.
Avery Leist, Petoskey — Petoskey softball went 3-0 over the weekend with wins over Troy Athens (10-2), Rochester Adams (1-0) and Mott (12-0) and Leist played a part in all of them. She earned a 8-strikeout win against Mott. She also scored 3 runs between the three, doubled and had 2 RBIs.
Bre VerCautren, Petoskey — VerCautren began her PHS career with four hits over the weekend, with a double, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. She also earned a seven inning win with nine strikeouts vs. Rochester Adams.
Alexis Cadarette, Petoskey — Between a trio of weekend games, Cadarette led off and had 5 hits, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Cora Howard, Petoskey — Howard had a single, 2 RBIs and 2 runs against Mott and tripled and scored two runs against Troy Athens.
Caitlyn Burks, East Jordan — East Jordan dropped two games against Hillman (0-3, 3-17), tied Central Lake (8-8) and topped Ellsworth (17-6) to begin the season and Burks had 5 hits, an RBI, a double, 2 triples and a run scored.
Sydney Guerriero, East Jordan — In the late-week start, Guerriero went 7 for 8 with 3 doubles, 5 RBIs and 4 runs scored.
Olivia Maher, East Jordan — Maher went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs, 3 runs scored and 2 doubles against Ellsworth.
Marlie Richardson, Harbor Springs — Harbor Springs opened 4-0 with wins over Alanson (24-3, 19-0) and Harbor Light (17-2, 15-0) and Richardson went off, going 9 of 10 with 9 RBIs, 9 runs scored, a double and a homer.
Kaylin Samyn, Harbor Springs — Samyn earned two wins and struck out 17 batters in a 4-0 start. She also had 3 RBIs, a double and a triple.
Peyton Frost, Harbor Springs — Frost had a homer, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored in a 19-0 win over Alanson.
Callie Keiser, Harbor Springs — Across a 4-0 start, Keiser contributed 10 RBIs, which included going 7 for 8 against Alanson.
Petoskey tennis team — More than just one standout, the Petoskey girls tennis team got off to a 9-0 sweep over Glen Lake in the first week. Singles wins came from Tara Brantly (No. 1), Eva Rindfusz (No. 2), Arden Copeland (No. 3) and Lexi Wang (No. 4). In doubles, Charlie Todd/Meg Gietzen (No. 1), Lucia Andrews/Eliza Rogier (No. 2), Lola Clarke/Lani Wang (No. 3), Makija Howard/Paige Hubbard (No. 4) and Ellie Daniel/Ella Opie (No. 5).
Braydin Noble, Boyne City — Noble scored three goals for the Boyne City girls in a 5-1 victory over Kingsley.
Fran Warren, Harbor Springs — Warren scored in each of the first two games for the Rams as they started 2-0, before dropping to Gaylord Saturday.
Lizzie Bassett, Harbor Springs — Bassett scored the game-winner against Elk Rapids in a 2-1 final and season opening victory for the Rams.
Annika Gandhi, Petoskey — The first goal of the 2025 season for the Northmen came from Gandhi, who scored the day before her birthday in a 4-0 win over Big Rapids. Petoskey is now 1-2 after falling to Gull Lake and Grand Ledge.
Brooks Plackemeier, Harbor Springs — Plackemeier set a new personal best in the long jump in Kingsley with a distance of 19 feet, 2 inches.
Charlie Ranney, Harbor Springs — Ranney placed first in the 110 hurdles in Kingsley with a new personal best of 15.73 seconds.
Reagan Kelso, Harbor Springs — Kelso started her year off with a first place finish in the 100 meter dash in Kingsley, running 13.43, a new PR for the sophomore.
Sam Mitas, Petoskey — Mitas opened the year qualifying for states right away in Freeland with a 22.38 in the 200 meter dash, good for first and a new PR for the all-state sprinter. He was also second in the 100 in 11.14.
Zahar Rush, Petoskey — Rush placed third in the 1,600 (4:30.58) and fourth in the 3,200 (10:17.66) in Freeland, both new PRs.
PHS boys sprint relays — Petoskey’s boys sprint relay teams captured wins in the 4x100 and 4x200 in Freeland with Logan Beer, Seth Marek, Mitch Eberhart and Mitas running 42.92 and 1:30.88.
Korbin Sulitis, Petoskey — An all-state thrower, Sulitis placed third in the discus (150 feet, 5 inches) and fourth in the shot put (40 feet, 4.5 inches).
Alison Bailey, Petoskey — Bailey earned a runner-up finish in the 200 (26.49) and third place finish in the 400 in a new PR (1:00.60) while in Freeland.
Alexandra Petok, Petoskey — A sophomore, Petok placed second in the 100 hurdles (16.71) in a new PR and was fourth in the 300 hurdles (50.39) in Freeland.
PHS girls sprint relays — Petoskey’s girls followed up the boys with wins in the 4x100 and 4x200 as well. Petok, Loe, Nevaeh Leonard and Emma Mitas ran 51.03 and Leonard, Loe, Mitas and Bailey ran 1:46.31.
Hunter Eaton, Charlevoix — Eaton had a strong opener in the Upper Peninsula at the Yooper Invite, winning the 800 (2:00.49) and placing second in the 3,200 (9:51.69), both PRs.
Ryder Hopkins, Charlevoix — Hopkins was one of a few strong distance runners in the U.P., placing second din the 1,600 in 4:52.68.
Andrew Grogan, Charlevoix — Grogan earned a new PR to open his junior season in the U.P., throwing 40 feet, 11.5 inches.
Taryn Carey, Charlevoix — Carey was second in the long jump at the Yooper Invite in 14 feet, 7.75 inches. She was also fifth in the 200 (29.59).
Cambrynne Giem, Boyne City — Giem had a strong day with a third place time in the 400 (1:09.08), helped the 4x400 relay team to a win (4:35.43) and was sixth in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches).

BASEBALL
