Peyton Manning has quarterbacked the Indianapolis Colts every Sunday since Sept. 6, 1998.

He won't this weekend.

You know why?

Because I joined a fantasy football league for the 1st time since I drafted Deuce McAllister and Cadillac Williams in 2007. I took over a dynasty team that had Manning as the QB.



With my luck, I should load up on Dallas Cowpuke players.

I don't think they tanked that whole season by any means. The tanking occurred late when they fired the head coach and Pop moved into that spot. Both Robinson and Elliott were shut down for the last few games (several?) ostensibly for injury and yes, it appeared they could have played if the games mattered. But there were real injuries involved for the meat of the season. I think the chance a team enters the season in any major sport with the intention of tanking is incredibly small and I don't think it will ever occur in the NFL.

The Spurs just got "lucky" and pulled the #1 lottery ticket. They had like a 21.6% chance.

More tanking. The Colts were 9-7 two years in a row and had advanced to the AFC Championship game in 1995. Suddenly they go 3-13 and get the #1 pick.

Now Manning is hurt and they'll go 2-14 and get Luck, Manning will play a couple of more seasons, and Luck will take over.

My money is still on the Bengals to win the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. Their offense is almost sad to watch. Dalton might be a fine QB in time, but he's just not ready.

As a fan of the game, I'm bummed about Peyton. He's still one of my favorite players to watch, as long as he's not lighting up the Cards.

Official: Sources say Manning had surgery this am - cervical fusion with 2-3 month minimum recovery.No word on whether he will be put on IR.

I don't see how they risk putting him back out there in Nov/Dec. IR seems like the most likely option to me.

On Sunday, John Michael Vincent of ESPN 1070 in Indianapolis reported that Colts quarterback Peyton Manning needs another surgical procedure on his neck. Though the team kind-of/sort-of indirectly denied it, JMV was at least in the right church (even if occupying the wrong pew), given the flurry of reports and developments that followed JMV’s information.

Now, another Indianapolis radio host is upping the ante.

Jake Query of WNDE, citing two unnamed sources whom he trusts, reports that Manning already has had another procedure on his neck, and that he’ll miss the entire 2011 season.

Manning’s status remains cloaked in mystery, in part because the team is likely sharing the bare minimum — and in part because the condition from which he suffers involves complex neurological issues that can’t be addressed by taking two aspirin or “wanting it.” But with afternoon drive-time host in Manning’s home market reporting that Manning’s condition is far more serious than currently believed, it’s not too early to at least consider whether we’ll see Manning play at all in 2011.

Or 2012. Or ever.

I really meant to say quality of life... 3 neck surgeries in a year and a half is not good and he is messing with the Gods if he tries to play again...

He's made millions of dollars, won a Superbowl, may just be the greatest QB of all time. There is nothing left to prove that is worth jepordizing your future.

I drafted Payton in one of my leagues. It was in the 4th round, but I still feel like I hitched my wagon to a falling star at this point.

From a fantasy perspective it sucks because he's almost assuredly on a do not cut list in most leagues.

For real life it's really a bad break for him I hope he thinks long and hard about whether he comes back.

I agree as well.

He and his wife had twins last Spring. I LOVE watching Peyton Manning play football, but he needs to take care of himself and do what is right for him and his family.

1996 a buddy of mine in a scoring only league gets the first pick for the first time in years. He takes Warren Moon and his 33 1995 TDs with that first pick.

Of course Moon gets hurt and misses half the season and throws all of 7 TDs.
