Of the free agency moves made by the Indianapolis Colts, which one was Pro Football Focus' least favorite?
There's one obvious choice here and, to a degree, it's by default. The additions of Charvarius Ward and Cam Bynum certainly won't fall into the "least favorite" category, while the re-signings the Colts made--Ashton Dulin, Danny Pinter, and Wesley French--don't move the needle enough to fall into a category.
So, that left Mason Cameron of PFF with the Daniel Jones signings as his least favorite.
"Although you can’t knock the Colts' proactive approach to bringing in competition for Anthony Richardson, this deal makes Jones one of the highest-paid backups in the NFL. However, Jones has earned a 70.0-plus PFF overall grade in each of his past four seasons in which he played at least 350 snaps."
The Colts are paying a hefty amount for Jones, who could end up being the team's backup. Jones signed a one-year, $14 million deal that could be worth as much as $17.7 million with incentives.
For some context around that contract, Jones has the sixth-largest cap hit on the Colts' team this season. Among all quarterbacks league-wide, Jones' cap hit ranks 20th.
That's a good chunk of cap space that could have gone elsewhere on the roster.
With that said, GM Chris Ballard has made it clear since the offseason began that bringing in competition for Anthony Richardson was a top priority, and with limited options out there in that regard, that means paying a premium to get the player you want.
The hope is that the competition that Jones' experience can bring will, in turn, elevate Richardson's level of play. After being benched last season, we did see Richardson improve once he returned to the starting lineup.
However, if that isn't the case, having Jones on the roster gives the Colts another alternative if they do have to go a different direction at any point this season.
