Cardinals rookie receiver Ryan Swope dropped in the draft because he had four concussions at Texas A&M. Now the effects of those concussions are holding him back at Organized Team Activities.

Teammate Larry Fitzgerald said on SiriusXM radio (via ESPN.com) that Swope has missed practice time while working through issues related to the concussions he suffered in college.

Fitzgerald’s comments are the first we’ve heard that Swope’s college concussions are still an issue, but they were definitely an issue for him heading into the draft. Mike Mayock said on NFL Network that Swope would have been a third-round pick if he had a clear medical history, but he fell to the sixth round because of those concussions.

The remainder can be found:

I would assume we did our research and etc before drafting - maybe he re injured in camp somehow? We all heard the concussion issue but you assume with drafting the guy - its gone. Almost sounds like he may be like kolb and have had such severe concussions that one good hit and he is done.

They haven't done any hitting in camp. So I doubt he would have injured it in OTAs. It sounds like a lingering issue from his last concussion.

Just as an aside-----this kid possesses such great talent that even if he goes on the PUP list until such time as he is better able to deal with hits, he would still be a welcome addition to the team. Having been selected in the 6th round, the loss of time would not be totally out of line for the expected benefits of eventually fielding a healthy and talented WR of his caliber. We did this with Jim Dray, and with OBrien Schoefield as well I believe. Both have made valuable, though limited. contributions.

these situations have poorly panned out for us really. its a good risk as it could be huge but Obscho has been a dissapointment and Jim Dray barely sniffs the field

6th round pick.

Worth the risk, IMO.

Did anyone actually hear the SIRIUS interview? Here's Sando's breakdown of the comments:

Meanwhile, Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald alluded to general concerns regarding teammate Ryan Swope, a sixth-round choice in the 2013 draft. Fitzgerald, speaking on SiriusXM radio, indicated Swope has missed practice time while working through issues related to the concussions Swope suffered in college.

Second-hand medical information from a player hardly qualifies as an official diagnosis, of course. In this case, the comments from Fitzgerald help form a line of questioning for when there's an opportunity to follow up.

As Sando says, it's difficult to go on whatever Fitz happens to say; Swope is working on a completely different field. It's possible that he's just had to sit out some reps because the sun is too bright and giving him a headache.

I hope he doesn't turn into some Kolb/Heap hybrid. I really want the kid to have a good career in this League.

I don't really doubt the substantiveness f the report as much as I doubt the severity of it when it goes into the PFT echo chammber. (sorry if there are typos; I have a tempur-pedic ad running d thmiddle of my screen).

There's a difference between sitting out some res hile you get a sun screen put on your helmet and missing full practices or meetings whilst you hide in a shed. If Swope is missing a dozen reps out of a thousand, I'm not going to sweat it much. If he's missing half of rookie camp, that's a little bigger deal.

being the burner, he will have limited route trees either way. I dont care if he misses all of OTA's, im only concerned about when he takes his first real NFL safety hit.

I disagree.

Sure he will probably be running a bunch of deep routes but I wouldn't limit him to just those type of routes.

Plus being a receiver in the NFL is not just running a route. They have to be able to read the defense and be on the same page as the QB as well. You know the kind of thing that takes practice and reps with your QB.

Swope was an interesting pick because he's a three year productive TA&M player who was not only productive in the Big 12 but in the SEC too. His speed is deceptive though as he's not a burner but more of a manipulator with the ability to set up a DB by running short routes and then faking to break off into a deep route on later plays.

But if he can't get on the field, he's useless to us (Jahvid Best in Detriot)..

I hope he recovers and has a productive career here but his concussion concerns seem to be all more valid.

Larry knows

if Swope is having issues this long after the season his brain is toasted. While I love football and I'd love to see him make a few plays his long term health is already in serious jeopardy. He won't be functioning at age 45.

You are making broad assumptions based off of very little information.

Do you have to catastrophize every situation? Is it too difficult to wait until more substantiated information surfaces ? Last I checked, Fitz isn't a doctor.

Hope this is all just precautionary. He checked out medically at the combine and for the team. Four diagnosed concussions is no joke; limit him in OTAs and have him work in TC and preseason. His ceiling is too high.

He's not a doctor??? Oh my God, the Arizona Medical Board is going to come after him!!! And I am sure charges will follow for him impersonating a doctor! Even if he beats the rap, Goodell will make an example of him! This season is toast! Aaaaaaarrrrrghhh!
