You are making broad assumptions based off of very little information.

Do you have to catastrophize every situation? Is it too difficult to wait until more substantiated information surfaces ? Last I checked, Fitz isn't a doctor.

Yea Larry knows nothing about concussions in football. Larry doesn't talk to the WR coach and ask 'Why's Swope sitting out?' Larry is always talking S about other players so he looks better.

My god it's Fitz....if you can't believe him...who can you believe.

and if your son was having concussion symptoms months after football you'd say 'don't worry about it...medical science knows nothing.'

While I LOVE Cardinal football I'd rather Swope have a happy healthy life without it.

NFL players from old and new have been clear in the direct connection of concussions to future problems that they have to face. It's not pretty.

I heard that dockett had a beer last night. I cant believe it. He must be a full blown alcoholic. He should be cut.

Larry stating that the guy has sat out a little bit doesnt garner the overreaction you put out but that is typical of you so im not sure why anyone is surprised.

I disagree.

Sure he will probably be running a bunch of deep routes but I wouldn't limit him to just those type of routes.

Plus being a receiver in the NFL is not just running a route. They have to be able to read the defense and be on the same page as the QB as well. You know the kind of thing that takes practice and reps with your QB.

This. Swope wasn't an attractive prospect because he's Demaryus Thomas; he was an attractive prospect because he was a bigger Tavon Austin.

catch-and-run, bubble screens. Texas A&M isn't a traditional drop-back offense.

I'm not concerned about getting reps with the QB, because on the second field he's working with Lindley and that Purdue kid. Who cares?

Let's all keep in mind, as well, that Swope isn't going to be anything more than the 4th WR and 5th receiving target. He's going to be lucky to be on the field for more than a dozen reps per game.

I posted in the draft threads that I started asking my scout friend about Swope in round 3 or 4 and he said that Swope was a good player but his head is scrambled from all the concussions.

He was worth a risk in round 6, but this should be no surprise to anyone, especially the Cardinals.

He's not a doctor??? Oh my God, the Arizona Medical Board is going to come after him!!! And I am sure charges will follow for him impersonating a doctor! Even if he beats the rap, Goodell will make an example of him! This season is toast! Aaaaaaarrrrrghhh!

:biglaugh:

Awesome...

Well-----I am happy to see that the team value's his health enough to not push him into any kind of situation that could cause more harm this early in his career. I am still of the belief that he has value to this team, even if it takes a year to clear his head and get stronger. If he can't, then we lost out on a 6th round draft pick, but at least they will have given him a chance to heal and play. I still like the pick, AND the manner in which the team is dealing with the issue.

Larry knows

if Swope is having issues this long after the season his brain is toasted. While I love football and I'd love to see him make a few plays his long term health is already in serious jeopardy. He won't be functioning at age 45.

This.

Thankfully , it's not a must get him on field right now situation , we can be patient . If need be IR him for the 13 season , then if things don't look good it was only a 6'th rnd. pick unlike what has just happened to the Raiders 1'st rnd. pick .

K9 is correct. The Cards could put him on IR for 10 years and it wouldn't make any difference. A 6th round pick behind Fitz, Floyd and Roberts? Not much there for you fellow. It's not like the good old days of Kasper, McAdderly and Jenkins.

Most 6th round guys don't last without studs like those in front of them. If he can't play we won't miss him.

Another ridiculous draft pick by the Raiders. You don't draft a guy in round 1 that almost died within the past year. He may turn out fine and be a very good player but draft picks already have a significant bust potential and throwing medical concerns on top it is pressing your luck.

I agree that Swope won't be running much with the first team in practice and probably won't see the field much as a rookie barring injuries.

However I think he will be running with the second team and Stanton a lot. So far this new coaching staff appears to be good at making sure everyone is taught how to do things right. They also appear to be quick to jump on you if you do something wrong. So whether it's Carson Palmer or Drew Stanton out there at QB, learning the correct reads and making the right adjustments is going to be taught no matter what.

The more reps you get in practice the more time you have to see different situations and prepare for them. If something happens to one of our top 3 WRs then it's next man up and that is probalby Swope. Although every snap he misses is another opertunity for someone like LaRon Bryd or Jaron Brown to move up on the depth chart.

Making no sense....1 point

please.... Larry state Swope has been sitting out with concussion symptoms and you are stating....nope it's no big deal...you are also saying how does Larry know...

foolish reference to Dock and beer...no one is calling him out on it, but if his best friend who is with him every night was saying so...yea it's an issue.

the news is coming from Larry....and I trust what he says as truth.

add to it Swope's last concussion was months ago...that's a bad sign. He should be 100% by now and seeing he's not IS a big issue.

Shoot Kolb was out for most of the season because of it...and if in Buffalo he was still sitting out practice due to concussion symptoms they should be concerned....difference is Kolb is playing....Swope is still feeling the effects.

if you can't add that together....no one can...maybe you had a few concussions and can't piece it together..but by your logic it wouldn't matter

no, it all makes perfect sense, I was simply being hypothetical. I am simply not a chicken little type of person. Because fitz said swope sat out a few reps really equates to nothing however, you have deemed it as a wasted pick and he will never play. You could be right but its an assumption on a comment.

You do it on everything. Its ok. Im used to it. Just like how wash should be cut, swope will never play a game and whatever your next debacle will be.

Larry said hes missing plays - he didnt say "ryan swope is still feeling the affects of his concussions"

Maybe if thats what he said, you would have a point.

it could be migraines, dehydration, being drained and unconditioned coming to camp, lots of stuff. Ill wait until some fact comes out before I judge.

Innocent until proven guilty

I think what a lot of people are forgetting is that concussions aren't a consistent injury. It's not standard weight and measurement type stuff.

They aren't all of the same severity and beyond this each person reacts differently to them. Even then, what exactly is a concussion given that under some people's definition a concussion might happen to just about every player a few times a game, every game. (that's the whole....a concussion is any impact that causes some sort of seeing stars)

They do tend to become more frequent the more you get and/or the worse one was. They also are very serious and should weigh heavily into any athlete's mindset of whether or not to continue playing.

But I also think we have a bit of an overreaction to them at this point. One way of controlling behavior is to traumatize people or scare them, and people have been scared by concussions. As serious and scary as they are, there generally are signs that people are heading that way. I think Kolb is right there at that point, and given the money he's made, imo quitting would be best. But we should recognize we have been inundated with all the hype around concussions (like from the NFL and NFLPA) and it may be clouding our judgment on it.

Some people recover fine, others don't, but I don't believe Swope is at that point yet where he's in that sort of danger. Perhaps one day he will be, but not yet.

I don't think Fitz really has any information. Perhaps Swope was lying during the draft process, but the four he has had he's described as minor, and didn't keep him from missing any playing time.

Kolb missing significant time and still feeling the effects a month or two after the season has gotten us a little trigger happy on calling concussion severity of our other players.

Swope, unless we've been lied to, has not had anywhere near the type of severity that Kolb had.

Plus considering the nature of Swope's potential contributions versus that of a starting QB, and being a part of a receiving corps such as ours, he doesn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

We don't have all the information. So I think we need to take a step back and wait and see how long he goes before he gets a concussion on this level and see how his body responds to it before we start jumping to conclusions.

No missed time and being described as minor simply doesn't align itself with what Fitz said. The quote is also a bit weird. It almost sounds as if Fitz is referring to Swope's in the context of college concussions. Perhaps it was just a communication error by either the encoder or decoder. (fitz or whoever he was talking to)

It's so weird. Go back to the pre-draft scouting reports on Swope and there's nary a word about concussions or a history of them or anything. Suddenly Swope falls in the draft and it's the first thing that anyone says about him. "Well, you know that he's had four concussions last year..." No, we didn't know that! You never told us.

I guess that there will be some degree of concussion at just about any contact sport . If we look at boxing , two guys step into the ring and start swinging away at each others head (they don't have any helmet protection) over a career they must absorb and deliver a lot of concussions . Concussions must be like finger prints , different for each person .
