With what is believed to be somewhere between $4 million and $6 million in cap space available after taking into account the $4.1 million allocation to sign their 2006 rookie crop, our sources in the desert tell us it’s a good bet the Cardinals will try to extend the contracts of one or two key veterans before too long. At the top of the list is SLB Karlos Dansby, who is currently under contract through ’07 and could be on the cusp of a true breakout season as a big-time playmaker. A possible thorn in the bushes is the fact that Dansby is represented by Carl Poston, who has been known to drive a hard bargain. But it’s worth noting that Cardinals VP of football operations Rod Graves has a solid reputation for being able to deal with “difficult” agents such as Poston and Drew Rosenhaus, who represents star WR Anquan Boldin and another possible candidate for a contract extension, DT Darnell Dockett, who will be a restricted free agent after this season.

Hm.

If we could only choose one player to extend, who would it be?
Dockett or Dansby?

Love to see them both.

Tough call on both to be honest. Dansby is the better player right now but his knees scare me. Dockett if it was really the system holding him back last year could have a breakout year this year and then you regret not extending him already, but if you extend him and then he has a similar year, you might have jumped the gun.

Clearly with both we gotta wait until the season starts to judge their level of play.

you should be able to extend both players contracts. look how many years they have left on their contracts and extend them one year at a time. i believe dansby is going to be looking for lavar arrington kind of money. unless dockett produces then it should be easy for the cardinals to extend his contract. in the end if the cardinals want dansby and dockett to be with the cardinals then a deal can be reached. i remeber an interview with tim brown several years back. brown said basically if a owner wants to keep a player then they are going to keep them.
