Manchester City have warned Phil Foden and reminded to stick to social-distancing rules after he was pictured playing football on the beach with fans. The incident happened at the weekend on Formby beach on Merseyside. Foden not only played football after he was recognised on Sunday, but also posed for pictures after the impromptu kickabout and can be seen huddled closely together with those who wanted to have one. Foden can be seen laughing and joking during the kickabout, where he only narrowly avoids being tackled and also politely accepted requests for pictures when asked. In normal circumstances, his willingness to interact with fans in such an informal environment would have been welcomed, but his behaviour was in breach of social-distancing guidelines and City will be forced to remind him not to mix with anyone from other households because of the increased risk of catching the virus. With the Premier League expecting to resume the season on June 17, every player has been instructed to follow government guidelines and told of the danger they are putting themselves and their team-mates in if they fail to do so. Although players are being tested every three days and squads will not be forced to quarantine if an individual has a positive test, if Foden did catch the virus he would be forced to self-isolate and would therefore be a major doubt for City’s first game after the restart against Arsenal. Given the vulnerable nature of Project Restart, top-flight players have even been told by their clubs it is too much of a risk to go to the shops, yet Foden decided to enjoy the sunny weather by the coast. Even though lockdown restrictions are easing in England as the Government looks to get people back to work and the economy moving again, outdoor exercise with members of a different household was still banned at the weekend. Although the 20-year-old’s actions were not considered to be a serious breach, unlike his team-mate Kyle Walker who was disciplined for hosting a sex party during lockdown in April and also criticised for driving to Sheffield to give a present to his sister last month, City will reprimand Foden and stress he cannot put himself or others at risk of catching the virus again.
