I forget when the Cardinals changed their name from Phx to AZ (93?), but I was curious if anyone had problems with it or if it was a huge deal among Cards fans. I obviously was too young to remember or care.

Also, I have an old Phoenix Cardinals T-shirt and I was wondering if that's OK to wear at a Cards game in your opinion, even though its not an AZ Cards shirt. For instance, some people dont like it when people wear jerseys from a player no longer with the team etc. Just curious...

It was for the 1994 season, Buddy's first. I didn't have a problem, but I do remember we got my dad a ton of Phoenix Cardinals gear (Hats, shirts) the year before they changed it.

That's true.. I guess what I'm wondering is are there a lot of people at the games still wearing their PHX stuff. Obviously it's still Cardinals gear, so it shouldn't matter - Just curious!

And thanks green machine, I was guessing either '93 or '94. And that's a bummer about that Cards gear :(

it's rare to see anyone in PHX Cardinals gear. Only a die hard would have it, and there's so few of us die hard cards fans, most of us bought AZ cards stuff in the last 9 years. PHX cards stuff is cool, you wouldn't be frowned on at all.

Think about it this way, last year at the home game here against the Rams, TONS of people showed up in their Warner and Faulk jerseys, and most of those people were probably bandwagoners. The few people I saw walking around with old LA Rams jackets and shirts and jerseys and stuff were the ones I respected and thought were real fans.

So wearing Phoenix Cards gear is cool. About the closest thing you really see to it is the old white jerseys with the black lining around the red numbers. There are a lot of those on people in the stands.

As for me, I have a #90 jersey that I cut the Wadsworth name off of. With all the player turnover, I'm thinking of just getting a #56 jersey and putting VINCE on for the name :)

Ah good point, I didn't even think about it like that. Thanks, Vince :)

I always thought it was a mistake that the team was called the Phoenix Cardinals instead of the Arizona Cardinals right away. Bidwill immediately alienated southern Arizona. Being from Tucson, I know that most Tucsonians would rather cheer for anything but a team with "Phoenix" tacked on it.

I'm sure the Florida Panthers have scads of fans driving down from Pensacola and boating in from Key West to cheer them on just because they have "florida" in their name and not Miami. Stupid Tampa Bay Lightning!

Think of how many Coyotes fans in Douglas and Page are ticked off because of the Phoenix name!

People in Tucson, and this is from my experience living there for 6 yrs, are generally anti-Phoenix. ANything that is "Phoenix" and not "Arizona" gets short shrift there. They are very weird like that - I think it is a inferiority complex for them.

Thanks mdamien, You just answered my thought. I knew that Buddy R. had something to do with the changing of the name but I was only guessing that it had something to do with trying to bring in more fans from the entire state. Being an out-of-stater I did not know everything that was involved. I like it myself. I think it has a better ring to it.

In spite of my earlier, sarcastic, post, I think they should've been named "Arizona" from the start. At that time though, I don't think any NFL teams had a state as their name. Carolina and Tenn. both came later.

i generally like city names over state, but if you think about it - "phoenix" is already a name for a bird (although mythical). so phoenix cardinals is kind of like "bird birds." maybe that had something to do with it :)
