is supposedly their bread and butter play. Why don't they ever run it with Matrix (or some other player)??

I often wonder that myself. Marion usually has the quickness advantage on his man and could beat him to the hoop just as Amare does.

im guessing b/c amare is usually guarded by the biggest guy, thus bringing that defender away from the hoop and allowing nash a better lane

or possibly to keep marion on the wings for a jumper or a 3

It could also be because Stoudemire is much better at looking for (and taking) contact. If Marion doesn't make his shot in traffic, he isn't going to score, because he's not adept at getting to the line.

Well that makes sense to me. Could also be that Amare has better hands.

I would add to Eric's post that I don't think Marion's hands are all that great. Amare can scoop things up down low in traffic (esp. bounce passes) in a way that Marion just can't....

This made me think...supposedly Amare hits 3s pretty easily in practice - I was picturing him taking - and making - a 3 tonight - Avery leaps up and runs onto the floor screaming that it's unfair, he wasn't told and had no time to prepare!

Then they'd have to change his nickname from The General to 'The Prosecutor"

When the General wiped out in game 1, I thought: this series is over. Now.

Please, please, let me be prophetic....

I really don't think Marion has the power to dunk over people like that. Marion looks really soft... I mean the way he got blocked my Stackhouse 3-4 times. He is just not that strong. But he is lightning quick for his size!

What I don't understand is Nash VS Hunter. I mean Hunter is a center but he just can't run pick&roll well with Nash for some reasons. :(

Another thing I suspect is that when we do pick&roll we need SPACE and Marion usually stands far from Nash so the opponent MUST guard Marion since Marion can hit 3pt. But if it's Amare standing far away...I doubt the defender would stay to him that close.

So going to Amare is the logical choice.

Although didn't D'Antoni said Amare will start shooting 3pt next season? Wow. 5 LOADED GUNS!!!!

marion's first season he dunked on people. then john starks took him out. he's been a lot softer going to the hole ever since. and after a strong beginning of the playoffs he's begun shying away from contact again. how many ft's has he taken in the last 3 games?

Have you noticed the punishment he has been taking? It seems like everytime he goes to the basket, he's being undercut! It happened several times in the Memphis series.

Personally, I think you're selling him short, because his defense on bigger players has been terrific, and he still has no qualms getting in there for rebounds.

I agree, I don't see any problem with Marion's aggression at this point. But, for whatever reason, he just doesn't draw fouls.

It's odd, but he doesn't get hand-checked all that much--that's how Nash gets his foul shots. And he doesn't get fouled going up for rebounds or shots, which is how Amare gets his foul shots.

But I certainly don't think it's because he's trying to avoid getting fouled. He's not a bad FT shooter.

chap, i'll agree about his defense and rebounding (though how often do you see him rebounding in a crowd?). but watch him drive. he'll almost always pull up or throw up the floater to avoid contact. on the shots that he went down in the griz series he was aggressive. not so much in this series. maybe as a result of the physical shots he took in griz series?

Joe Johnson does the exact same thing. And Marion has been rebounding in a crowd all through this series.

chap - you admittedly said Marion was AWOL in Game 4 and did you even get to watch Game 5 (a very unlike Marion performance 5 points below his average, 1 board below his average) - weren't you in line for Star Wars?

He needs to step it up tonight - we'll need the Marion we saw in the first 7 game sof the playoffs where he was seemingly stepping up to be a TRUE PLAYOFF WARRIOR rather than the more timid games we've seen in the last two.

Is that question the same as saying "You have no freaking idea what you're talking about!" :biglaugh: (Actually, I did watch most of the game, I went to the theater with about 6 minutes left in the 4th)

I definitely agree that he needs to take some initiative, but I still think his #1 task is to defend Nowitzki as well as he can--then he can concentrate on offense.

no - I just thought that after a game where he was kinda AWOL again - myabe you missed it because you said you were gonna be in line - no point to be made there.

He was HUGE in Game 3 - keeping us in it with 5 3's - I just want to see him with FIRE tonight, he's seemed to be lacking it in the last couple.

I actually think Marion is one of those guys who is hard to foul. He goes to the rim a lot nowadays, but he snakes his way and launches his shot so quickly (often without much touch, alas) that he's hard to hack. Maybe.

Shawn Marion was 9-18 for 19 points with 12 rebounds and 3 assists in Game 4. Wednesday he was 7-18 for 19 points with 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks. While those aren't his strongest performances of the playoffs one can hardly be disappointed in what he has done, especially when you consider his defense.

he scored 7 of those 19 in Game 4 in complete garbage time and he had 16 in Game 5 - not to mention in those games that Dirk came alive shooting 9-15 and 11-22 for 24 and 34 points respectively.

That being said - I hope he comes out with reckless abandon tonight - he's one of our Veteran leaders on this squad and this is a game where our Vets are gonna have to seize the moment and end it! Go get 'em Matrix!
