My niece went to see this and I was going to take my youngest but I think I will pass now that I heard their review. Why does Disney Animation bother with this garbage? Especially when they are putting out stuff like Tangled, Wreck it Ralph and Frozen?

I still think this is a blatant attempt at Disney blurring the lines between Pixar and Disney Animation with the long term prospect of getting rid of the PIXAR brand.

Not a bad thought about having them dish out bad movies. Good way of breaking that connection, but doesn't Disney own it out right?

Yes, Disney bought PIXAR but PIXAR up until recently had the more valuable brand when it came to Animation. The PIXAR brand has been gold so shedding that didn't make sense. With recent hits Disney Animation hits (which Lasseter should get much credit for implementing PIXAR methods) the tides are turning.

By the way, I am not saying they are making bad movies on purpose....only that by using PIXAR based creations without the PIXAR brand is an attempt at a larger term strategy to dump the PIXAR name IMO. Just pure speculation on my part but it makes long term business sense.

For now both Pixar and Disney Animation run their own studios within Disney under the direction of John Lasseter (Mr. Pixar himself).

Their business plan is pretty simple--a tentpole movie in the fall (like Frozen and Big Hero) with a now lesser movie in the summer (Planes, Monsters University). There is no Pixar movie this fall, but Inside Out is next June with The Good Dinosaur in the fall of 2015 and I believe Finding Dory in June of 2016. The Good Dinosaur is definitely their "big" original movie coming up, even though Finding Dory will make loads of cash.

The Disney Animation films have a similar release schedule--twice a year, once in March and again in November in years that Pixar does not have a film in the fall. So they are not competing with each other. Pixar's problem right now is that they haven't had a spectacular film come out since Toy Story 3 in 2010 (unless you are a Brave fan--which I didn't think was spectacular). But just since 2010, Disney Animation has had Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen

Code:
Big Hero 6 November 7, 2014	Walt Disney
Inside Out June 19, 2015	Pixar
The Good Dinosaur November 25, 2015	Pixar
Zootopia March 4, 2016	Walt Disney
Finding Dory June 17, 2016	Pixar
Untitled film November 23, 2016	Walt Disney
Untitled film June 16, 2017	Pixar
Untitled film November 22, 2017	Pixar
Untitled film March 9, 2018	Walt Disney
Untitled film June 15, 2018	Pixar
Untitled film November 21, 2018	Walt Disney

My guess is that at least one of the 2017 Pixar releases will be Cars 3 and the 2018 release might be Incredibles 2.

I'm guessing Toy Story 4 will be in there too.

There is no Toy Story 4 planned or announced.

I know cash is king in Hollywood but I hope they don't. The last one was GREAT and a fitting ending to the storyline. Although my daughter pointed out to me she is offended they have not brought back Bo Peep and she wants at least a Toy Story Short to explain where she is and wants her and Woody to get back together. Ahhh....the mind of a child.

Something for the younger audiences...

Plus, there is always this:

Budget $50 million
Box office $219,788,712

Well their straight to video "era" was a cash cow as well but they moved away from that because it diluted the brands and hurt the reputation of Disney being about "quality" animation. That's why under JL they severely dialed it back. I think I remember reading an article where he said he killed a ton of STV projects in the pipeline based on their classic properties.

You could be right though and maybe this is simply about money. However, it seems like they are headed back to doing the same kind of damage if this kind of thing continues. I have to believe Disney is smarter than that which is why I think there is another possible aspect to this.

It goes beyond just the box office numbers. Toys and other merchandise are huge as well. I am guessing a theatrical release boosts the sales of toys and merchandise dramatically over a STV release.

Good point but STV releases like the recent Tinker Bell movies have also boosted massive sales in Tinkerbell merchandise. They even created an entire character meet and greet area at Disney based on those versions of the characters.

True.

It probably just comes down to Disney doing whatever they want. :D
