SAN ANTONIO (AP)—Hungry after taking a 3-0 lead on the San Antonio Spurs with a fifth straight playoff win, the Phoenix Suns ate dinner early Saturday at one of the few places they could find open.
“Hard Rock,” Grant Hill(notes) said. “We didn’t have many options that late.”

At least they firmly control what really matters.
The Suns returned to the AT&T Center for practice Saturday every bit as relaxed as the night before, when general manager Steve Kerr was comparing Goran Dragic(notes) with Michael Jordan and Phoenix left with its most commanding playoff series lead in five years.
Steve Nash(notes) lounged courtside. Amare Stoudemire shot jumpers in fashionably geek, Elvis Costello-like glasses. Hill revealed that he spoke with NBA commissioner David Stern about writing a book, something along the lines of Bill Bradley’s “Life on the Run.”
He’s now got a better read in mind: these Suns, so close to dealing Stoudemire at midseason and starting over, now sitting a victory from ousting their longtime playoff nemesis and reaching the Western Conference finals.
“What’s happened this season, and the things that we’ve gone through, and how special and unique this team is?” Hill said. “It should have been documented. I’m still kicking myself.”
And the Spurs?
They were across town, sullen and frustrated and mulling what history says will be the final chapter written about them this season.
No team in the NBA playoffs has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit. Tim Duncan(notes) has been in this position only once before heading into a Game 4, in the 2001 West finals. The Los Angeles Lakers wound up womping San Antonio by 29 points.
Only a week ago were the Spurs being hailed as perhaps the best No. 7 seed in NBA history after impressively dumping Dallas in six games. Now they are looking like, well, like just about every other seventh seed in NBA history.
On the eve of Sunday night’s Game 4 in San Antonio, coach Gregg Popovich still had a sense of humor after the Spurs emerged Saturday from their film session—which likely starred a backup, unheralded Suns guard shredding them for 23 points in the fourth quarter.
“Didn’t you see the guys come out of there cheering?” Popovich joked. “Some were crying, some were cheering. It was very emotional.”
Tony Parker(notes) came out OK, albeit sore. He had X-rays taken on his lower back after several hard falls in a rough return to the starting lineup Friday night. He’ll play in Game 4.
“Everybody’s surprised,” said Parker, who scored just 10 points in Game 3 after averaging 23 in the first two games. “We played very good against Dallas. Now we’re in a bad situation.”
Hill remembers the Suns having that feeling just three months ago.
It was during the All-Star break, when Stoudemire put his chances of being traded at 50-50 and the Suns started pulling out of a two-month tailspin. Going into the break having won five of six, Hill retreated to Cabo San Lucas with his wife and kept his fingers crossed.
“It was almost like, ‘I hope they don’t blow this team up,”’ Hill said. “Because I feel like whatever it is, we discovered it. We figured out that formula.”
Kerr said that feeling was universal.
“We had a pretty good thing going,” Kerr said. “We weren’t playing great at the time, but that’s why I maintained all along it was going to take something really good for us to break up the team.”
Had that happened, Stoudemire wouldn’t be on the brink of beating the Spurs in the playoffs for the first time in five tries since 2003.
Not that the Suns are getting ahead of themselves.
“Somebody said it’s 88-0 when you’re 3-0,” Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. “You know what, there’s also a situation where a man didn’t walk on the moon until 1969.”
Suns need to leave it all on the court today. Everyone will understand if the Spurs fight back and take today's game (to save face) but just play like this is game 7.

Lakers are most likely going to sweep the Jazz. Get it done guys and get some rest before next series.

I'd find a way to make this clearer if I were Gentry, but he has a point. Someone in the NBA will come back from 0-3 at some point. It hadn't happened in baseball for 100+ years until the Red Sox. There's already a case of an NBA team forcing a Game 7 after falling down 0-3 (I think it was Denver against Utah in the early 90s). So there are still 48 minutes of work to be done.

+1. Not to jinx us but it really does seem possible. You figure they probably will win today. If we show up at home assuming we'll win (and we've certainly done that before) it's not difficult to envision the Spurs stealing that game. That takes us back to SA where again the Spurs could reasonably expect to win. We show up in game 7 against the Spurs and the league sends us three blind refs and all of a sudden we're back in the history books.

I view tonight's game as a near must win. If we can withstand a probable strong start by SA tonight the Spurs will be doubting themselves by the second quarter. Get it done and take no chances because I'm telling you, we do not want this series to go to 3 and 2. All the pressure would be squarely on our guys.

Believe the Suns are 6-1 in close out games in the Nash era. Hopefully they can improve on that tonight. Spurs obviously need the win but they needed the last game nearly as badly and just looked demoralized after the loss.

Expecting a bounce back from Amare that can hopefully propel the team to a W.

not to make anyone more worried, but it happened to a Nash team also - Portland was down 3-0 against the Mavs back in 2002 or something like that and it went to Game 7.

AHH!!! NO!!! :mulli::mulli:

I hope beast amare shows up.

agree. someone other than Dragic or Barbosa needs to step up. Amare with only 7 points is unnatural. Although it is nice to know that if they decide to suffocate him inside, there are perimeter players who can cause equal if not more damage.

I worry that the true nature of the Spurs will come out tonight and one of the new Spurs boneheads will try to hurt a Phoenix player. It doesn't take too long until the colors [sic] in that San Antonio jersey seep through the skin and into the bloodstream. Blair will shove Richardson in the back while JRich buries a two-handed slam or McDyess will leg-whip Grant Hill while fighting for a loose ball or something.

When the Suns were down 0-3 against the Spurs, they won game 4 in SA to avoid the sweep. They also won game 4 in a similar situation against the Lakers back in 2000. It is difficult to sweep a team. The Spurs have a lot of pride, and will come out just trying to extend the series.

The problem is that even though no team has ever come back from 0-3 to win a series, if the Spurs win game 4 they will then be down 1-3. And quite a few teams have come back from 1-3. In other words, if we lose game 4 we will give the Spurs hope that they can still come back in this series. And that may be dangerous.

It is absolutely in the Suns best interest to treat tonight's game as a must-win to finish this series before the Spurs start thinking they still have a fighting chance. And with the Lakers also looking for a sweep, the Suns do not want to allow this series to be extended while the Lakers will be resting and preparing for conference finals.

I can live with a loss as long as it is not a blowout

I can live with a loss as long as it's the Spurs that lose. I won't even mind a blowout, again, as long as it's the Spurs getting blown out. If we lose I really expect to wake up dead tomorrow.

It'd b nice to see Amare explode and end it emphatically tonight after a somewhat quiet playoffs for him so far.

We can be sure of one thing, they will play like their reputations depends on it, which it does. It is mother's day and they will be playing like a tiger backed into a corner. If the Suns pull it off and beat them today. F the Lakers because they will go down in flames in 6.

Good let them keep jumping and playing fast pace, as long as it is close. They are not deep enough to sustain all this speed.

I expect they'll stop focusing on Amare and try to take away our outside shots. I'm not sure they have the weapons though to stop us from the outside. We could easily go cold on our own but failing that I like our chances.

Oh geez. Why is our offense so pathetic to start off these games? :( Suns shooting 25% so far.
