Gary's detailed and dispassionate tape reviews just keep getting better and more informative. Always strong on the football side, Gary's getting the writing end of it down too. He deserves a wider read than he's getting and that's my fault for not giving him the lead article slot.

I screwed up and didn't see his submission yesterday until I got home. My apologies.

So do yourselves a favor and check your biases and impressions against Gary's tape review.

"Are you using nfl.com statistics for tackles? Most of the time they are not accurate at all... However, I still enjoy your reports." - posted by Wildman©

Yes I do Wildman. Some of the things I see like QB pressures that I put down, but the regular stats I use NFL.com. For me to count every single tackle and assist would be too time consuming. If I see a sack or a really big hit I will write about that a lot of the time.

"Attaboy! Agree with practically everything. Was surprised at your assessment of Clement's play in light of other comments on this board. Ditto that re Spikes (who tends to receive a pass from us each week yet to me seems to get beat occasionally. Are you seeing actual games or picking all of this up off your TV screen?" - posted by Jeff G

Jeff, thanks. I get all my review from on tv. I tape the game and then review each play, and what each player did on each play. When I review the offensive line, I take a few things into account. One thing is, I only count a man getting beat if it is within three to four seconds. If Blake is holding the ball for five seconds and then someone gets through to him, I don't count that against the offensive lineman, I count that against the quarterback. Most plays as you know are based on timing. If the QB doesn't make his reads on time and get rid of the ball I think he should take the blame for it and not the o-lineman. Also, a lot of the time teams blitz with LBs, CBs or safeties and either overload the line or they beat the block of the RB or TE. I don't count the o-line being beat since it was someone elses missed block. Using the game tape I can see the play of both lines and the surrounding players. I can't always see what happens down the field with the CBs and WRs. When I say that I saw the CB beat so many times, it is just how many that I saw. He could have been beaten more.

"i just don't see how you can grade out 4 out of 5 of our olinemen as having good games after a debacle like this. i appreciate your taking the time and effort to do this research, but by saying "did not miss a block" do you mean he "accomplished" (ie, moved his man to a place sufficient for the play to be successful) his block?" - posted by ouchie-z-clown
YES

Look at my post above ouchie. I do mean with in reason on the blocks. If the lineman keeps his man away from the QB for three or four seconds he has done his job. A lot of time like in the Bears game, teams will overload one side and a man will come unblocked. It is not the lines fault if there are four guys lined up on two and someone gets through. Also, take for instance Leonard Davis. If he dominates his man almost the entire game but gets beat a couple times, I'm still going to think he had a good game. I fully expect every o-lineman to be beat once or twice a game.

Your articles are excellent Gary. Very thorough. I particularly liked your takes this week on Kendall and Barrett...right on the money. And I couldn't agree with you more about Jeff Blake...and if we do draft Eli Manning or Ben Roethlisberger, I am all for playing him from day one...Thanks for all the time and effort you are putting into your posts. Kudos, man.

Thanks Walter. I have liked your writing for a few years now. You have a real elegance with words in your articles and I can tell you put some time into them as well.

I would be happy with Manning or Roethlisberger. Did you see Berger against Bowling Green the other night. Man he looked good. If he plays that well in his bowl game, he might be the first pick instead of Manning.

Thanks, Gary. Yes, Ben looked amazingly good, especially in light of the significance of the game. Right now it's hard to tell who's better, Manning or Roethlisberger.

The other guy I like a lot is Philip Rivers of NC State...72% completion rate as a senior (which is pretty amazing at any level)...a real good sense for spotting the open receiver...not a rifle of an arm, per se, but more than makes up for it with an impressively quick release.

All three of these young bucks (EM, BR, PR) are 6'4"...which is ideal.

"My question concerns the CB's. How much is poor pass defense the work of the CB's or the lack of a pass rush?" - posted by garthshort

I was going off of what I saw the CBs doing. When the CB isn't covering his man in the first few seconds of the play, it doesn't matter what kind of passrush you have. They were pretty much letting the receiver be open from the get go on many plays. They were just beat on some others.

Rivers is my sentimental favorite, since I'm from NC and I always pull for the colleges back there.

He has a funky release, but he is so effective that I would draft him later, maybe even our 2nd rounder if we don't draft a QB in the first. He has size, moxie, and is a great team leader. He has also outplayed Ben and Eli against top competition.

mac is not going to play a rookie next year and a new coach will not either because he will need to win. i think you will see blake at qb with a much better wr core and someone who can go long.
