I'm curious to see how people think we can win a championship in a few years and what our team makeup will be... I just don't see it.

As long as half of our starting players can't defend one-on-one, there is no chance we win a championship anytime soon.

ok,
first off all, amare has to become THE go-to guy, you pass the ball to the post, amare does things, if not, the outsiders have to hit their shots, preferrably both working well.
ok this style of play is pretty boring, so -with nash- here and there a fast break and a spectacular finish from for example marion.
a defensive center wouldn't be bad, someone who can do some weakside help and block a shot or intimidate some penetrators. lampe? maybe but Big Jake did it from time to time in the past.
I mean Nash is not such a worse defender, Amare already is pretty good at blocks, JJ is a above average defender and Marion can play very very good defense.
(btw all you "i trade marion for a sandwich as long as its 7 feet tall" - guys: he was something like 3rd in steals/game with over 2/game)
With amare scoring 25 pts, JJ 18, Nash 14 and garbage points for Shawn and Lampe it'll be no problem to win a championship, of course good coaching is also needed, hm,.....

I guess it was close, the other post I guess I was asking how we can keep our guys after they possibly want max contracts and this question is just wide open.....

Everybody WANTS max contracts. JJ won't get one. With the new players contract coming up, max deals may not be as expensive (shorter life) so Amare may not backrupt the team. In any case, with the luxury tax gone I'm not worried about the salariy strucutre getting into the mix $60's. This is not the NFL.

As I said in the other thread, the Suns are building a team that will score a lot of points. They will have to work hard to become adequate on defense, but there is no self evident reason why they can't. No one believed Sacramento could play defense, but they proved they could in the playoffs.

In any case, the Suns have the potential of becoming an extremely good offensive team. Unlike the Mavs, they have a terrific low post threat to go with a run and gun fast break team. Using Marion and JJ as cutters rather than trying to intiate shots should be vastly more effective than what we've seen over the past few years. Having a PG who will pass to cutters will have an enormous impact on how these guys play.

BTW, I think Nash will average upwards of 18 ppg with the Suns. He did at little over 14 ppg on a Mavs team that was heavy on outside shooters. On the Suns, their wing players are better at going to the basket, so defenses tend to pack the paint. This typically leaves the PG wide open on pitch backs. Marbury was typically open on his three's, but missed a lot of them. Barbosa shot pretty well, but had to be completely wide open and did not get that many minutes. If teams keep doubling JJ like they did late last season, Nash will be open for three pointers all the time. He hits them.

To answer the initial question--add as much talent as they can, and wait a couple of years for the young core of the team to develop. Above all, don't trade Shawn Marion.

I would have loved to see the Suns sign Okur, but it didn't happen. Their best chance of getting a center now is through the draft, unfortunately enough.

If Lampe turns out to be the real deal in a couple of years, then their job is a lot easier--the Suns would only need a role player to complement him, and it might be possible to get such a player through trade or with the MLE.
