PHNX cardinals podcast believes that Payton has always been interested in the Cardinals HC job & primarily because Sean is intrigued by Kyler Murray.
Its not that he wouldnt like Kyler. Its just that injury might be the dealbreaker for him. Can wait a year and find a healthier QB next year. Im hopeful that Kyler comes back better than ever, but does Sean want to risk it? No injury and I think he takes the job. Now well you're hoping he's more Burrow/Watson in bouncing back better and not RG3/Wentz.

I will take Sean Payton. Sean looks like the guy who has brass to air out the Bidwill's dirty laundry enough to force the league to sell the Cardinals if things go south after hiring. Bring in Sean.

He has already expressed interest in the Cardinals & Murray. Whenever he has spoken about Murray, it was in a very positive way. Murray is THE reason why he’s still in AZ tonight. He met with Bidwill when he was in town for the TCU/MI game & expressed his interest. The fact that the Cardinals were the last team to meet with Sean was orchestrated by these 2 parties back on 12/31.

I actually share the same fear as @SoonerLou. My logic being that Kyler's game is predicated on mobility, and if he doesn't come back to full strength next year, Payton's now gotta determine what the next step is at QB. Continue to hope that another year is going to put Kyler into full health? What if KM never recovers?

If Payton wanted to be in a situation where he had to start over at QB, the Texans job is right there. With a 100% Kyler that just needs some different coaching, the discussion would be different.
I think that is partly right, because with average mobility Kyler can still throw the ball with the best of them if, yup the big if or rather ifs, that he stops relying on his athletic scrambling to bail himself out and probably keeping him from being a student of the game... yeah, he is short but his problem is mainly mental and if anyone can ingrain that aspect into him and make him a pro QB, that's Sean Payton

Payton may also go about building an OL that gives Kyler enough time so that he doesn’t have to use his scrambling ability to avoid ever collapsing pockets. Payton & MO are going to purge that roster like none of us has ever seen.

Sorry so late guys but everything is still up in the air. The update is Payton wants total control of the GMs job building the team because he says he doesn’t know if he can have a winning record with some else controlling who puts the team together. That is what they are working on.

If Kyler can learn the system we will see moving pockets. Not designed runs.

How would that work? Payton becomes assistant president of football operations and head coach with Monti reporting to Payton?

Does that mean he still is in town, and how does Monti view that
