Three years ago the answer was no (he was given a chance and turned the Suns down).

uh, what is this based on? All reports were that team Suns went after one man and one man only when the clock struck midnight - Steve Nash. Care to tell us where this concrete bombshell above comes from? I mean in live IN LA and I'm a ridiculously HUGE Suns fan who was salivating over possibly getting Kobe Bryant. You'd think putting those things together, I would have heard about this offer and subsequent turn down by Kobe, no?

Everything I heard was that they made the call at midnight and Kobe said "no". From all indications the Suns did not believe it would work and figured Nash was their prime target. But they did make the call.

uh, where are you getting this information? That's nothing more than unsubstantiated rumor that no one has EVER copped to. So, do you have some secret sources or something George? Where is this everything? Why didn't I hear about it in LA or read about it the Phoenix papers? And who exactly said "they made the call"?

Not sure if this is what azirish is refering to, but McCallum writes that Sarver was somewhat interested in signing Kobe because of how big a name he was. That doesn't exactly sound like they made an offer though.

It wasn't an offer per se, just a telephone inquiry as to whether he'd consider it. He said no. It was very quick (according the reports).

The discussion at the time suggested that this was a kind of "ass covering" operation because the Suns had let people think the whole point of the salary dump was to get Kobe. If the Nash thing fell through (as clearly it might have), when quizzed about Kobe they could say they called.

We don't know how the conversation went. It could easily have been "you don't want to come to Phoenix do you?" "No" "Thanks"

George, you seem to just be making this up as you go. Do you have ANY proof of this whatsoever, like statements from the Suns or Kobe Bryant? Seriously, you present the above as fact without any substantiation whatsoever. Seems a bit, I don't know, ridiculous to me, in the face of pretty much everything tothe contrary that said Nash was called at 12:01 on the first day of free agency.
