The Portillo Restaurant Group is planning an expansion into Arizona, bringing a Chicago institution to the Valley in the form of hot dogs and Italian beef.

The Chicago-area restaurant company is scouting locations in Tempe, Chandler and Scottsdale for new Portillo’s restaurants, and founder Dick Portillo said he’s bullish on the expansion.

“We ship a lot of (mail-order) food to Arizona, and I got emails all the time from people asking us to open there,” Portillo said in an interview earlier today. “I think we have a lot of fans there, and I want to be proactive on this.”

There are 31 Portillo’s Hot Dogs locations nationwide, with all but three in Illinois. The company has one Indiana store, and in 2005 branched out into California with two locations.

Mulli informed me of this via text a few days ago. I truly fear for my waistline. Their combo is my favorite sandwich of all time. I have been to many trying to even come close to Portillos.

I plan to be there opening day to show my support.

I took a plane to Chicago, just to get a combo from there..........

oh and of course to visit Mulli too.

To anyone in CA who needs a fix there's one on LaPalma Ave about 1/2 mile from Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park. Parking lot is always full of Illinois plates. Now I know why. I had no idea it was an Institution.

I went to the one in Moreno Valley. The first time going, it was really confusing, and I didn't know where to go after ordering. The food is great. I went back many times for lunch.

I've eaten at the one in Moreno Valley many times but if I'm in the mood for an Italian Beef sandwich there's only one place in Mo Val to get it and it's not Portillo's (although theirs is very good). The Chicago Pasta House (another restaurant that was originally based in Chicago) has by far the best Italian Beef sandwich on the planet, maybe even the galaxy. It's probably also the least healthy sandwich on the planet and certainly one of the messiest. Their Giardiniera is not always as spicy as Portillo's but it's incredibly tasty.

Most of the time when I go to Portillo's it's for the Jumbo Hot Dog with hot peppers. Quite tasty. They make a pretty decent burger also and for the ovo-lacto vegetarians out there they have a nice grilled veggie sandwich (portabello mushrooms, yum). I just wish they would duplicate their entire Illinois menu.

Portillo's Hot Dogs, a popular Chicago-area chain known for its hot dogs, burgers and beer, plans to open locations in Tempe and Scottsdale in early 2013. The first location is expected to open in February in Scottsdale near Shea and 90th Street, said Patty Sullivan, a company spokesperson.

A second location is slated to open in Tempe next summer at McClintock Drive and Rio Salado Parkway.

That is the beauty of it. If for some reason, you don't want a delicious italian beef sandwich, you can go with the hamburger. The burger is like the third best thing. I am skeptical the one in Phoenix will be as good, but there is hope.

So I guess I will take you word for it?

It's where that Steve guy lives. It's also on the way from Phoenix to Los Angeles (and vice versa). I haven't quite figured out why it's one of the first places Portillo's expanded to or why the Chicago Pasta House left Illinois for it but my stomach thanks both of them for their decisions. Of course, my waistline isn't quite as happy with them but who listens to their waistline.

Although the place is actually quite famous for it's stuffed pizza, I'm not too fond of most of their Italian dishes. I do, however, swear by their Giardiniera - it's heart stoppingly good. Whether you have them drench an Italian Beef in it or add it to one of their other sandwiches, it's delicious.
