I think that come draft time, the Suns will take the best player on the board regardless of position. This has always been their stance on drafting.

That isn't exactly true. Quite often they take players based on need.

Recent examples:

Barbosa (we needed a back up PG, and he was not considered the bpa since no one knew a thing about him)

Casey (we needed a spot up shooter, and he was the best one left)

Amare (we needed a PF, and at the time he was thought to be a huge project, and definitely not the bpa)

Big Jake (centers are always drafted by position, and not bpa unless it is a top pick player)

That is just off the top of my head. I would have to take a deeper look at previous rosters judge if people were taken more on BPA or by position. Anyways, it is my sentiment that the suns draft on position and needs much more than they do by player skills.

I'm sorry, but I don't think any of those players are good examples of players taken because of need. Cabarkapa, Luke Ridnaur, Lampe, and Barbosa were the top players on their draft board last summer. The Phoenix Suns may have needed a power forward at the time they drafted Amare Stoudemire, but they would have taken him even if they had Charles Barkley on the roster. They loved him from the get go. They took the risk on Big Jake because he was a center, which they needed desperately, who was projected to go much, much higher the draft. Casey Jacobsen is the only player I see that they obviously drafted for need. They reached for him.

If the lottery ends up like this

1. Chicago/Phoenix
2. Phoenix/Chicago
3. Washington/Atlanta
4. Charlotte
5. Washington/Atlanta

Chicago would take Okafor most likely #1-2 but they would also want a SG/SF especially if Deng is in the draft. Apparently John Paxson saw Deng in private Duke practices already.

Atlanta wants Howard like Cleveland wanted James.

Phoenix trades
#1-2 , Howard Eisley, Jahidi White
Phoenix receives
Tyson Chandler or Eddy Curry

Atlanta trades
#3 or #5
Atlanta receives
Howard Eisley, #1-2 Dwight Howard, #14-16 Cavs pick

Chicago trades
Tyson Chandler or Eddy Curry
Chicago receives
Jahidi White, #3 or #5.

Now that would be awesome. :D

20M$+ capspace to tango.

You did not mention the Cavs pick in your section on what the Suns trade.

I really have to wonder just how much Atlanta wants Howard. They are giving up an extraordinary amount for one player: their draft pick and the acceptance of a $13 million player who could be replaced using a veteran minimum. Throwing in the Cleveland pick might help if there was someone at that spot they really, really wanted. But I suspect the Hawks would want a lot more considering how despirate they were to clear cap space to begin with.

Bingo! That's why I have a hard time believing any team is going to take Howard Eiseley's contract AND give the Suns their own high draft pick. If he looks THAT good the Suns better just take him themselves.

I can't see giving up either Howard or Okafor just for cap space. The whole point of getting cap space is to be able to sign a highly hyped player so they can sell seats (winning more games would be nice too). Howard is already generating a fair amount of hype and that will increase if he tests out as well as people expect. If U Conn gets to the final four, look for Okafor's hype level to go through the roof.

Yeah, I don't expect a high school player like Dwight Howard to sell many seats at America West Arena. We all know who he is because we follow the NBA so closely, but the average NBA fan would have absolutely no idea. He hasn't received as much hype as even Amare Stoudemire did not even a fraction of the high of LeBron James last year.

Okafor might sell a few seats if he has a nice NCAA run, but who knows of the Phoenix Suns even want him?

Dwight Howard will benefit greatly if LeBron wins ROY. It would mean two HS players in a row winning ROY with speculation if Howard could be the third.

One of the reasons that Amare did not get more hype was due to the disappointing performances of Chandler, Brown, Curry, and Diop which led to a backlash against HS players. LeBron's status was certainly enhanced by how well Amare played and the current crop of HS players will benefit from both from the perspective of the media (and probably the scouts).

LeBron's situation was somewhat unique in that he had high visibility before his senior year. That made it possible for his school to schedule out of state games against top 20 teams that gave LeBron a national showcase. But I suspect Howard's hype will get serious once the NCAA'a are over.

George,

I just don't think draft picks sell tickets anymore. I agree that if a local four has a nice run in the tournament and as the Phoenix Suns draft him he might sell some tickets. But nobody in this draft is going to have the effect that LeBron James or even Carmelo Anthony did last Summer.

It would open up an interesting situation if the Suns got the #1 pick and the Hawks #2. How much would the Hawks give up to get Howard?

What could Atlanta offer the Suns that they would want more than Howard himself?

Count me as in favor of Slins trade idea. Our off-season moves could be, convince Charlotte to take Jahidi in the expansion draft, trade our #1 and Eisley for Chandler. Sign Kobe. Sign Dice for cheap. Bring in Milos. Laugh giddily.

pg JJ, milos, Barbosa (Kobe)
sg Kobe, Casey (JJ)
sf Shawn, Zarko (Kobe, JJ, Amare)
pf Amare, Dice (Lampe, Zarko)
C Chandler, Lampe, Jake

Chandler is developing well for a big man. He's a shot blocker and rebounder which is what we need along side of Amare.

Who would fit the center need better than Chandler (from the choices available in the draft) plus, we can dump Eisley's salary.

There are probably flaws, but as far as speculative trade on a message board, its one of the better ones I've seen.

Funny thing is, I think Chicago might go for it as well.
