When can Cards sign players to PS? I can`t remember if its today or Monday.

I would like to see Keillen Dykes DT
Trevor Canfield G
Another CB or 2
A Developmental QB Palko ?
Another T for development-looking ahead since Gandy is a FA after season along with Elton Brown

Another pass rushing player-either DE or LB

I'm pretty sure it's tomorrow (Mon.).

One thing that's a bit complicated and confusing is that whole area of the PS, waiver pickups, guaranteed-salary deadlines etc.

Someone please clarify if I'm wrong but my impression is:

1. For us to assign someone to our PS, they first have to clear waivers.

2. Since we were Super Bowl contenders, we will be 2nd-to-last in the waiver food chain.

3. If we're fortunate enough to put someone really good on our PS, another team can claim him IF they're willing to put him directly on their 53-man roster.

4. Some veterans were cut because: if they remained on the 53 man roster as of yesterday (Sat.), their entire 2009 salaries would be guaranteed. A number of them figure to be re-signed within a day or two.

5. Although some teams have a bunch of roster holes they want to fill via the waiver route, nearly every team has a small number of released players they hope to re-sign.

6. What we no doubt hope for is that enough other teams are so focused on re-signing 2 or 3 of their own vets that they'll leave our cuttees alone and we'll be able to re-sign them.

7. My guess is that the relative "silence" after the mass cuts has to do with a hidden Kabucki dance involving minor trades, monitoring the waiver-wires and waiting for the dust to settle.

8. If guys clear waivers and don't wind up on a PS or regular roster, they're free to negotiate with anyone and go anywhere. Perhaps there are a few released Cardinals who, in a sense, become a de facto "old boy farm system" for the Cards to tap into should injuries create needs for veteran help later in the year.

9. What we don't really know are things like: "How do the Cardinals really feel about guys like Hobson and maybe Ollie Ross? Are we considering bringing them back?" "How do guys like Hobson, Francisco or Ross feel about the Cardinals?" And "How do other teams feel about these guys or about youngsters like Onrea Jones or Canfield?

10. In short - What's the likelihood we'll get any of these guys back?

Don't you wish you were a fly on the wall at Cardinal Hq right now?

Depending on when the guy was cut we can start making our PS right now. Since we did our cuts on Friday we can start adding those guys right now since their wavier wire period is over with. Waiver wire period is 24 hours from the time they were cut. Since the bulk of the NFL cuts were made at the deadline yesterday at 4 PM Eastern Time, you will probably here about PS list starting at 1 PM AZ time Today. The NFL schedules its cut down date so teams have time to make their practice squads before they start practicing again on Monday to get ready for Game #1.

1. Yes
2. Yes (note that waiver wire priority list changes After Week 4, and then goes with current NFL standings)
3. Yes

I have a feeling the Cardinals are going to be very much in pursuit of PS candidates from other teams...players like C A.Q. Shipley, OLB/DE Chris Harrington and TE Bear Pascoe.

Two players I would like to sign are OLB/DE Maurice Evans, had an off season problem between his junior and senior year at Penn State, but at one point he was a top 100 pick; and he is an excellent pass rusher. The Giants just had too many. The other player is CB Mike Mickens (U of Cincinnati), very good ball skills and because he does not have top speed (4.5 / 40), he could develop into a very good nickle/dime back.

I was wondering why the FO made the cuts so early. Is this a tactical move in that while other teams are still focusing on their cuts they won't be paying as much attention to the players we cut. I'm probably just over or under thinking this :)

I remember that the Cards were pretty pissed when the Bengals picked him up off of our practice squad last season. Be nice to get him back, especially with the lack of depth there

Tell him kudos. And give him the advice of making John Lott his best friend this season so he can start off the 2010 offseason with a bang. Just ask Breaston and Hightower.

Steelers just announced six PS signings and they include C A.Q. Shipley and RB Isaac Redman.

But they lost DE Ra'Shon Harris...he was claimed off waivers by the Panthers.

C Donovan Raiola...remember him? Was just signed to the Bears' PS.

QB A.J. Feeley was released by the Eagles.

He would have been a decent 7th DL. We will never know if we even put in a claim.

The Bengals have signed 8 to their PS and OLB/DE Chris Harrington was not one of them. Hmmm...

.

I dont think AJ is PS eligible, but he would be an upgrade over BSP simply because of experience.

When will the Cards announce their PS?

Great question, lauraw.

Last year they waited until all the ink was dry on every PS contract...it's annoying...but a couple of years ago, one player who verbally agreed changed his mind and went to another team. It shouldn't have been that big of a deal. But, the Cardinals usually want to just have one press release.

First to announce their cuts, last to announce their PS. That is how it usually works.

Interesting. For the Cardinals or in general? I had never noticed.

Do you know what the reasoning is Joe?

I know the exact reasoning. My Fax machine is down and they haven't received my suggestions yet so I had to use a bike messenger. Its a long ways from Surprise to Tempe.

Anyways, I have really have no idea. It just seems that is the way things work out. First to the party is always last to leave.

Ouch! The reason I logged on (early Sun. night ET) was because PS announcements were starting to trickle in to NFL Network.

Although we can be optimistic that the Cards cut early, so by now they know who's cleared waivers, the problem for us riff-raff is that we won't know which of our cuttees were picked up by other teams until they make an announcement.

Regarding info sources:

Hey Bearcat - I'm assuming you know about Canfield because you went to the same school (and were possibly even buddies).

Mitch - What site are you going to for your info. The scout.com site has become almost legendary for obtaining earlly info but I didn't see anything from them at last glimpse.

Jeff....I did not go back and read your 10 point post again, but realize that there will be many signings of veterans after the first games are over as the contracts are NOT guaranteed at that point...if they sign now and are put on the roster they are in fact guaranteed for the year....

Damn, Shipley cleared waivers? I wish we would've claimed him.
