Chiefs say no to new deal for Holmes
Kansas City Star
The Star's Adam Teicher reports that the Chiefs have told Priest Holmes that they won't sign him to new contract. Holmes, arguably the league's most underpaid back, has threatened to sit out the season unless his contract is reworked, but Chiefs GM Carl Peterson said yesterday that Holmes will have to play next season under his current deal.

The only thing Holmes HAS to do is die and pay taxes. If they don't restructure his deal, they'd better draft a back because I'll bet Holmes sits out.

What's he due to make, anyway? If it's a lowball deal, he should sit. Otherwise he should (but probably won't) get out there and honor his contract.

Something like 2 million per season, a comparably deal to Shipps.

I'd sit out if I were him.

Sorry but that is where I disagree.

KC should at least talk to the guy about a new contract that part I agree with and they should see if they can get something worked out because he deserves it.

But the bottom line is he signed a deal and regardless should be man enough to honor it regardless of what happens!

I hate the crybaby if you dont give me what I want attitude in professional sports. Regardless he is still in the upper 1% of this country at 2 million per and while underpaid really should not complain he is the one that signed the deal!

I agree with KC. Holmes has made demands. Who is he to demand? He signed a contract. To say "You pay me, or I'll hold out" before anything has started is dumb, in my opinion. I hate hold outs. I really do. If Priest thinks this contract is bad he shouldn't have ****ing signed it!

Priest Holmes should be upset...with himself, and his agent, for agreeing to the current contract.

Be a man and honor the contract, Priest.

See if I were in his situation, I would holdout.

He has proven to be a marquee player in back-to-back seasons, and is payed like a mid-tier player.

A major issue if I were in his shoes: How many teams honor contracts? Didn't the Chiefs just cut Duane Clemons and his 6 million dollar cap hit this year? No loyalty in football, and players have to earn as much as they can in the shortest amount of time possible.

Carl Peterson is a notorious hothead, and he might have just started another fire.

Duane Clemens contract was not guaranteed. That's why these guys get ludicrous signing bonuses. It's not as if the Chiefs broke a contract with him. If priest homes wanted more money he should have signed a shorter contract or made sure there was a provision for opting out of the contract.

At least in the NFL contracts are not guaranteed. Most of the players get ridiculous signing bonuses to make up for it, but it's better than the NBA or baseball. In those leagues it REALLY tried to be up the wall when players demand their contract be renegotiated.

I read a big thing on this on ESPN Insider

Basically it was making fun of the Chiefs. They cut players for underperforming on a regular basis. They then plead "honor your contract" when they have gotten argueably the best player in football for two years for dirt cheap.

They should renegotiate.

Holmes should tell the team he will honor his contract if they insist. He owes that much to the team since he got the thing back when it was a good deal for him, and he did sign on the dotted line.
But he should also tell the team if they don't renegotiate this year then all the money in the world will not keep him in KC next year.

That's exactly what I'm alluding to.

The Chiefs are not known as being very good with their players as far as contracts go. I have absolutely no sympathy for them.

It is pretty common for something like this to happen in the NFL, it isn't like Priest is setting a precedent. Because contracts aren't guaranteed for the players, they shouldn't be guaranteed for the owners either.

Players have to make as much money as possible with all the gruesome injuries and disabilities that they will face later in life. I read an article in Sports Illustrated a few years back, and it made me understand that what football players make is what they deserve.

The owners rake in sometimes a hundred million dollars a year, and the best paid players that make the league work get paid seven million. That money has to be able to take care of the players when they are old and can't take care of themselves.

Hey, just like teams can back out of a contract by cutting a player, it is the right of the player to want more. Will he sit out? Probably not, but I haven't heard serious efforts from KC to fix this. He definately deserves more, and the team should give it to him. Instead they resign Trent Green for 50 mil? I'd be mad too!!!

The honorable thing for Priest to do would be to play out his existing contract.

The honorable thing for the Chiefs to do would be to renegotiate his contract, or better yet, just give him a few million in bonus--much like someone in the workforce might get for over-delivering (albiet a much smaller bonus).

I wouldn't hold it against either party in this case if none of the above happens. It's a unique situation. The Chiefs signed a RB in Priest Holmes that at the time was a questionable starter--he'd lost every starting position he'd had since college (to RW in Texas, to Jamal Lewis in Baltimore). So naturally he wasn't going to get paid like a top back. But, to many peoples surprise, Priest became the second coming of Marshall Faulk (he led the league in 2001 and would have in 2002 if not for missing the last couple of games). He probably does deserve to get paid like a top-5, if not top-2 or -3 RB--he singlehandedly made the Chiefs an offensive powerhouse.

To further cloud the story, the Chiefs went of to sign Green to a very lucurative deal. Was Green in a contract year, or did they simply renegotiate his contract? That would be an enourmous slap in the face to Priest if it's the case.

If you sign a contract, you better honor it. If your employer wants to rip it up and give you a raise, so be it. Don't be a baby...play it out. If they don't give you a raise then leave when your contract is up.

I hate it when these players and their agents act like little wussies and complain about this when they are the ones that signed on the dotted line in the first place.

But what about the owners that are making money off the health of these guys, and don't show them the loyalty that the players are supposed to honor.

Priest Holmes is making around what we are offering Emmitt, and deserves his payday for all he has done for the Chiefs the past two seasons.

All I can say is that they signed a contract. The Chiefs are idiots for not keeping him happy, but I will lose all respect for Holmes if he sits out. The bottom line is that he signed. I am sure that he will remember what happend come contract time. He will certainly be a safe bet to stick it to the Chiefs.

See, I'm just sick of players getting screwed by teams that they have played hard for and get cut.

Players have to look out for themselves. If I had a job where I was highly productive, moreso than all but one employee, but guys with 1/10 of my ability were getting paid more and everybody knew and recognized how good I was, I would ask for a raise. In the words of Rod Tidwell, SHOW ME THE MONEY! :D

Yeah...I have no problem with Holmes asking for a raise. Hell...he shouldn't have to ask for one. The Chiefs are idiots for not negotiating with him. However, I do have a problem with guys holding out. YOU signed a contract. No one else but YOU! If you don't get what you want, suck it up, play it out and move the hell on to a division team so you can shove it up the Chiefs butt twice a year! :D

But the problem is: He could cost himself millions, if not 10 million dollars by playing out his contract....for me that's a good enough reason to holdout. This game is not about loyalty, or doing what you should do, it's about making as much money as quick as you can.

That is why I hate sports sometimes. It is then when I go to my local park and watch kids play Pop Warner or Little League. It keeps me sane. :D

But then why should the teams be able to back out of a contract by cutting a player, but the player not have a right to ask to have his contract redone?

And ot answer the question, Green was due a 10 mil roster bonus, so they restructured and in a HUGE way.
