at the OSU pro day, they take the time from every stopwatch and average them, which is where the official times come from.

Also, for people saying OSU has a fast track (which it does), Beanie was the only one who wasn't right around his time from the combine.

Sorry. Proof, please. Name the other players and their 40 times at pro day. Or provide a source. If what you claim is correct, it does have draft impact.

Okay. Situation resolved. According to a video report on NFL.com, your report is nonsense. Freeman, Laurinitis and Wells ALL ran significantly faster times at the OSU pro day. Check it out yourself.

In the Columbus Dispatch they posted the times. The times are median times because each NFL team hand times them. These do not include the high and low times.

Jenkins 4.50-4.56 combine 4.55
Robiskie 4.49-4.52 combine 4.49
Washington 4.50-4.54 combine 4.55
Hartline 4.50-4.53 combine 4.52
Laurinitis 4.72-4.78 combine 4.82
Freeman 4.50-4.55 combine 4.74
Wells 4.39-4.42 combine 4.59

by looking at those numbers only Wells and Freeman significantly improved. The rest are almost identical to their respective combine numbers. Another interesting thing is the players ran on the indoor FieldTurf surface- the same as the combine surface. In the article, Wells admitted being nervous and tight at the combine and was "fighting it" all day. Sid he knew he was faster than that time, just relaxed, and went out and proved it.

Thanks, cbus. We are all at the mercy of the varied media biases and yes, they have biases same as we do. The more info sources, the better.

cbssports.com aticle to contradict cbus and Columbus propaganda. Everybody ran faster on OSU track. Who, if anybody, has the real info?

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/story/11497275

Columbus propoganda . The CBS story has more hype in it than the Dispatch article.I'll go with the Columbus reporters who were at the workouts. It sounds like Rang took the fastest reported hand times and just used those. In the Columbus article it disregarded the high and low times. Also, if you see the video, you can see they are running on FieldTurf and not a track surface.

there goes any shot of him being there at 31... OSU has a fast track, but his teammates all ran slow.. and he apparently ran a 4.38 and 4.39

According to NFL Network (clip on nfl.com) he ran a 4.43 forty. The point made about the extremely fast track at OSU is well taken.

Regardless - The dude weighs 235 and competed in elite company. Anything below 4.53 or thereabouts figures to be fast enough. Biggest remaining issue (at least for me) is the "Curtis Enos factor" (i.e. does Wells have enough initial quicks off the ball to be more than just one more big back)?

His 10-yard time was 1.53. (I'm not sure how this stacks up against other RB's in the draft, but I'll come back here to update this post in few moments.

OK. Here 'tis:

Wells was tied for 7th fastest for 10 yards (behind Sheets, Ian Johnson (Boise St), Peerman, Andre Brown, Tyrell Sutton (Northwestern) and Donald Brown. Among the 5 other guys tied with Wells was Knowshon Moreno.

All of which suggests that (ignoring all the other factors that go into being a great RB) Wells appears to have both the initial quicks and straight line speed to be a force, given his size.

For someone his size who is able to run between the tackles the game speed with pads on is fine.

Hey, the man can tote the rock. That's not in question. It's the "other" stuff -- not finishing off runs, lingering doubts about his toughness and/or propensity to get dinged -- that made everbody look more closely at things like his 40 times.

50% of 1st round RBs flop. As Jeff put it, as a GM you don't your RB choice to be your Blair Thomas or Curtis Enis or Rashaan Salaam. Wells scares me.

Fair enough assessment. His durability is a concern. But he'd be part of a two back system and we'd more or less be getting him as a 2nd rounder where we pick.

I just can't see him falling all the way to #31 but who knows what can happen on draft day. I sure have been wrong many times in the past.

does that mean he's moved from 10th into 9th on your RB list :D.

As has already been mentioned once (but ignored for some reason), almost everyone at OSU's pro day ran on Field Turf rather than the "fast track", including Beanie and all of the big names. If you look at Beanie's form running at the combine in Indy and consider that he'd just finished performing the broad jump something like 8 or 9 times (wasn't sticking the landing), it seems pretty likely that he'd had a "bad day" and that there was room for improvement.

He ain't going to be there at #31. I am convinced 2 RB's will get drafted before #31 and I am hoping Brown runs a killer 40 at his pro day and moves up.....dropping Moreno to us.

You know getting Brown wouldn't be a bad thing either. I'm starting to come around on him. I was thinking that his line maybe made him look better than he actually might be. But with the way he steadily improved throughout the season and the load he carried, I could see this FO going with this young "laddy". He now has my endorsment....not that it's worth a hill.

Eight schools (Florida, Illinois, Penn State, Michigan State, California, North Carolina State, Akron, Louisiana Tech) will be holding their pro day workouts today.

The Broncos held a private workout with Louisville center Eric Wood on his college campus in Kentucky on Tuesday

Boise State Pro Day...HB Ian Johnson kept most of his numbers from the combine, but ran the short shuttle in 4.24 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.86 seconds, while also catching passes...WR Vinny Perretta. 5-9.2, 186 pounds had an exceptional workout and ran a 4.48 and 4.43 in the 40, had a 36-inch vertical jump, a 10'-6" broad jump, a 4.09 short shuttle, a 6.63 three-cone drill and did 14 bench press reps...Twelve NFL team representatives were in attendance at the workout. Looks like Moreno ran in the Low 4.6s during his pro day.
http://blogs.nfl.com/category/pro-days/

That's not good top end speed for a mid 1st rounder. And he's also down to 210 running that.

Tailback Knowshon Moreno, a likely first-round pick, also went through most of his drills, even though he said he lost about seven pounds (he weighed in at 210) after being sick the past few days. He ran about a 4.6-second 40-yard dash, which was consistent with what he did at the combine.

During the workout, Moreno’s agents received a call for him to finalize a private workout for the San Diego Chargers on March 30. The Chargers own the 16th overall pick in the draft.

Why does it seem like everyone gets sick before their workouts with pro scouts?

Because they are all working out for 8 hours a day in a germ infested sweaty gym with 50 other dudes, taking who knows what kind of supplements or how many of them, pushing their bodies to limits they have never done before, and lack of sleep because of that.
