Whispers Around the NFL
Oct. 30, 2006
With Dennis Green’s run in the desert on increasingly shaky ground, the Cardinals’ beleaguered offensive line keeps on changing almost every week. Green shook up his starting unit for the fifth time in seven games last Sunday, making changes at right tackle and both guard spots. The most significant move was the demotion of ORT Oliver Ross, who, put simply, has been a big-time bust since signing as a free agent two seasons ago. Ross, who was having major problems protecting left-handed QB Matt Leinart’s blind side, was replaced by Reggie Wells, who moved over from left guard. Wells has been considered the team’s steadiest and smartest lineman for some time now, but he has had his share of struggles at left guard, where recent waiver pickup Chris Liwienski started last Sunday. In addition, with our sources telling us the team believed it really had nothing to lose at this stage of the season, the Cardinals started rookie Deuce Lutui, Leinart’s teammate at USC, at right guard against Green Bay. With OG Milford Brown, a free-agent pickup this offseason, also still figuring prominently in the mix, we hear it’s quite possible more O-line changes could be in the offing.
