Things are going to change for the San Francisco 49ers in the not-so-distant future. Brock Purdy is currently playing on the contract of a seventh-round pick, which comes with a salary of only $5.3 million in 2025. He’s due for a major raise, somewhere north of $40 million per year.
It’s always easier to build a Super Bowl-caliber roster around a quarterback who’s on a rookie deal, but things get challenging once that QB gets paid.
Puka Nacua was on Julian Edelman’s “Games with Names” show recently and the two of them talked briefly about Purdy’s contract. Edelman asked Nacua if he thinks Purdy will get $50 million per year, but Nacua doesn’t believe the 49ers will go that high.
Edelman: “Brock Purdy, is he going to get a five?”
Nacua: “I don’t think so.”
Edelman: “You think it’s going to start with a four.”
Nacua: “I think so.”
Edelman: “High-four?”
Nacua: “No. Mid-four.”
Edelman: "A $45?"
There are currently 10 quarterbacks making at least $50 million per year, but Nacua doesn’t think Purdy will join that group. Interestingly, he believes the 49ers’ Super Bowl window will close if they pay Purdy $50 million annually.
“He seems like a smart guy,” Nacua said of Purdy. “They have a chance to still be in their window and I think if he goes for a five, the window closes.”
Purdy is a fine quarterback and he’s going to get paid regardless, which is going to hurt the 49ers’ ability to pay everyone else on the team. It’s likely why San Francisco would rather not pay Purdy right now, keeping that Super Bowl window wide open in 2025 when he’s only making $5 million.
Whether it's $45 million or $50 million, the 49ers are going to have to trim the salary cap elsewhere, which is going to hurt their chances of contending for a ring.
