So what's up with Wile? I thought he was the Cards punter.

Arians not happy with his punters

Arians doesn’t sugarcoat his opinions. If he doesn’t like something, the Cardinals coach will say it straight to your face and won’t pull any punches.

That’s exactly what he did on Tuesday, for example, when he was asked how the competition is going at the punter position between Matt Wile and Richie Leone.

“I’m not real pleased with it yet,” Arians said during his morning news conference. “It’s too inconsistent, both guys. They did not, neither one, kick off as well as they’re capable. So again, we’ve got four more games and we’ll look at it.”

Inconsistent kicking and punting were two big reasons why the Cardinals suffered so many problems on special teams a year ago. From the sound of things, it doesn’t appear the team plans to show much patience if the punting doesn’t get better soon.

“We’ll look at them for another couple weeks,” Arians said. “If we have to make a change, we’ll make a change.”

Kicking, punting, and second CB are a total mess right now. Was this really that hard to not fully address these in the off season?

BA said from the get-go that Dawson was doing the kickoffs...so why is he so concerned about the punters' kickoffs?

Plus, how important is it to give Dawson a good holder...are the Cardinals going to claim a punter at the end of pre-season and have the new punter hold after just a week with Dawson? Remember last year how BA cut S Marqui Christian in favor of keeping an injured Drew Butler as the holder?

This is why the Cardinals STs suck. Indecision, shaky personnel decisions/planning and poor coaching.

It is baffling. With all the good they do this area of the team just continues to be in turmoil.

It's like a baseball team with good starting pitching, good defense, and great hitting but a crappy bullpen. Not an earth shattering issue but it could make a difference between winning and losing close games. Think the Rams game at home last year. Close game with Stanton pitching in relief and the defense doing a good enough job to hold the lead until a late punt return put the Rams deep into our territory and they ended up scoring to take the lead and we lost. Because of that little issue, we had a losing season.

You would think with all the inconsistency that they would have Stanton or someone else hold. I went to 2 practices and punting was inconsistent and to top it off Wile muffed a hold and the play was busted.

Just guessing here, but it could be "in an emergency" situation. Like the Buffalo game where Can't-man got injured.

Sure,

But is a punter being able to kick off really a priority? I am far more concerned about things like, you know, their ability to punt and pin opponents within the 20 yard line. It would be nice to have a good punter. Is scott player available?

I agree with you, but BA wants both. Can he get that? I doubt it, we sure haven't had a good punter during BAs tenure.

OK--so what are the odds that you're going to find a punter who can be excellent on kickoffs and equally reliable at holding for your kicker?

I would take a punter who can flip the field any day of the week and give the holding duties to one of the best pair of hands on the team.

I just want a good punter. If we need an emergency kicker we can sign one when it comes up.

I realize it was a preseason game but after last year how could we feel good about losing another game due to poor special teams play. Even it was a punter missing a field goal. Why would we be set up for failure. Made me sick to be honest.

And, if the snap goes awry, you have a good athlete in Gabbert who can pass and run.

The Browns picked up Andy Lee last year (or was it the year before?) from the Niners for a 7th rounder. The guy had been nails for a decade, and still came that cheap. It shouldn't be hard to find a guy who can at least land in the top half of the league statistically, instead of bringing up the bottom like the last several ham & eggers the Cards have employed. If special teams cause multiple losses again this year, somebody's ass is gonna be in a wringer and somebody is gonna lose their job - and it might not just be the ST coach, it could go higher. Bidwill could not have been happy with the situation last year, and has probably issued a "fix this or else" ultimatum going into 2017.

We lost to the RAMs way too often in recent years

There is no issues with kicking - every report says Dawson practically never misses in practice, and he has a good history.

Kick return blocking is already better - you could see that in the first game.

Now can we find another punt returner that creates yardage - I don't see that person on the team - Rudy Ford is the only one that might have a little potential.

Punting can't be worse than last year, I'm not that concerned about it.

As far as 2nd CB goes - I think Bethel will be adequate, but what we have behind him is pitiful. They need 1 - 2 more veterans and they need them now.

Pretty sure we get too tight against the Rams and that's the reason we lose:)
