&A With DL Kenny King
A: I felt really ready for that preseason game and in the second quarter when we were winding down the playing time for the starters, I ended up breaking it again. I was trying to knock a guy’s hand off of me and I felt a pop in the wrist. I knew it was bad when it happened and all I could think was to try and play the half out because I was pretty sure it was going to be the last half I got to play the rest of the year. Sure enough, the x-rays showed that one of the four major bones in my wrist had detached from the plate they had put in before.
Q: So is this something that is fixed now or are you likely to injure the wrist again?
A: No, I’m pretty much at 100% now, and I think the repaired one will end up being stronger because of all of the rehab I’ve done on it. I think last time I had the surgery in February and I was already back working in April and May so I just didn’t have a lot of time before I was involved in contact. I was hoping to make a good impression on the new coaching staff, and so I probably rushed back a little too early. This time, I’ve had the whole season to recover and rehab, and now I’ll have this whole off-season to build up strength so I feel much better about things.
Q: Did you watch all of the games this season and what did you see from this defense?
A: Yeah, I watched all of our games, and I saw the defense running around and they looked great out there. I was excited about what I saw, and then sad that I wasn’t out there with the guys. I think they did a heck of a job this year.
Q: You were slotted to play the under tackle position last year but after the kind of year Darnell Dockett had, where do you see yourself fitting in next season? Is that something you’ve discussed with the coaches?
A: No, I haven’t really discussed it with anyone. I can play all positions and I’m pretty sure Darnell can as well. I just go in and do what they say to do. It’s just a matter of seeing who fits where.
Q: Last time we sat down for an interview, you were talking about getting a pet fish and how you were going to name him Brainy. Did you follow through with that?
A: Yep, I got Brainy. He actually was killed last week by the guy who takes care of my fish tank. He came and cleaned the tank out and I have two electrical panels on the top of the tank, one is for the lights, one for the pumps. The one for the light had the timer on it and the guy ending up switching the pump up to the timer and so at night the timer cut off the pumps and murdered all of my fish. I had six in there and all of them were killed.
Q: Sounds like a problem.
A: Yeah, this wasn’t the first set to die either. My first two fish were Danger and Trouble. They also died, but that was my fault. I overfed them. I thought they ate like people and I was feeding them a few times a day and they got too fat and passed on.
Q: Do you get upset when you see them belly up in the tank like that?
A: Yeah man, it is pretty bad. It’s depressing watching my fish die, so I am thinking I’m going to have to pick up another hobby.
Q: You moved into your new home last off-season and I hear you have some interesting neighbors?
A: All of my neighbors are really cool, but you are talking about the guy across the street I told you about right? The Ultimate Fighter? Yeah, he’s good to hang with. I’ve learned a few tricks from him. I definitely know how to defend myself if I ever was attacked. I can dislodge someone and take them down quick.
Q: Football is a pretty physical sport, but that Ultimate Fighter stuff is violent!
A: Shoot, I know. I went and watched him and that is pretty intense. When you watch a boxer and someone goes down, it is over you know? I mean, a boxer goes down, and that ends the fight. In Ultimate Fighting, someone goes down, they are in some serious trouble, it definitely isn’t an out.
Q: You spent last week in Mobile, Alabama. What were you doing there?
A: Well, they had the Senior Bowl and there were a lot of festivities going on, so since it is close to home I hung out and did some appearances there. Of course, I was rooting for some of the ‘Bama boys playing, and that running back from Auburn looks pretty impressive. There is a lot of talent out there so it was fun to check out some of the guys who will be coming into the league in April.
Q: Okay, so why you are away, I hear you have a spy at your house?
A: Most definitely. I’ve got some video cameras that I can hook into from anywhere and watch what is going on at my place. I just like to make sure everybody does their job, the pool guy does is his job, the fish guy comes and replaces my fish, the pest control does what he needs to. They need to come do their job and then go. They can get some water or Gatorade, you know, like one a trip, but I don’t want them getting out the pots and pans while I’m gone.
Q: So what is the best thing you’ve caught them doing wrong?
A: I had some guests in my house for the week while I was away, some family members, so I had a cleaning crew come in before and after my guests came. So when they came before, this one lady was saying she didn’t understand English and had another lady translating what I was saying to her. When they came the second time, my uncle let them in and when I watched the video, the one who said she couldn’t speak English was all of the sudden playing translator for the other woman so they had switched roles, so it must have been an act.
Q: What where their motives for that?
A: I don’t know. I really don’t know. I haven’t been back in town yet, but I’m going to have to talk to them about it. I thought that was kind of strange and obviously they forgot which one was supposed to know how to speak English.
Q: Were you surprised by any of the playoff games?
A: I think the teams that won were the two teams that were going to go so I wasn’t surprised. I’m going to pull for Philly and I think they have a good chance. I’ve got one of my boys from Alabama, Alonzo Ephraim, he’s a guard, playing there, we came out together so I’m pulling for him. Last year Kindal Moorehead made it with the Panthers, but didn’t get the ring so one of my ‘Bama boys has got to get a ring.
Q: You have a Kenny King foundation back in Alabama. What events are you working on?
A: Well, I just had an event at a car dealership to raise money for an elementary school in my town,Daphne Elementary, and an incentive based reading program they are starting, so I’m providing a lot of those incentives through my foundation. I’ll have a weekend long event coming up later in the off-season where I’ll get a bunch of my college and current teammates to help out with a football camp in Daphne and then one in Mobile as well.
Q: You are going along to the Pro Bowl with Seattle’s RB Shaun Alexander, your former college roommate. Are you going to provide me with a Pro Bowl Diary?
A: Sure, I can do that, no problem. Yeah, I’m excited for him and he actually just helped out with my event at the car dealership, so it’ll be good to go out there to Hawaii and support him, and check out my teammate Bertrand Berry over there. And, I’ll make sure to let you know what’s going on!
Q: Perfect, this is going on the website so you can’t back out now!
A: Oh no, I won’t!
