Selected by the Cardinals with the 5th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, tackle Levi Brown is adjusting to his new life in Arizona. The former Penn State standout recently sat down with azcardinals.com to talk about his transition into the NFL and life as a rookie with the Arizona Cardinals…
How has it helped you to have former Penn State teammate Bryant Johnson in Arizona as you make your transition into the NFL?
“It’s been real nice to have another guy from Penn State. He has been here for a couple years now and he showing me the ropes, showing me around the town a little bit, and really took me under his wing. He’s letting me stay with him right now until I find a place to stay and he lets me drive his car every now and then, so he’s been like a big brother for me.”
It has been kind of a whirlwind since draft day for you. Has it sunk in that you’re in the NFL?
“I’m very happy to be with the Cardinals. I think this team can definitely be great, I don’t know if it will happen this year, but I think we will make it to the Super Bowl and win it. I’m just really happy to be here.”
You admitted to feeling a bit overwhelmed with the playbook at first, but Coach Grimm broke it down for you. Are you feeling more comfortable after having some extra time to process the information?
“I feel a lot more relaxed. I’ve been able to take off a little quicker. Last week on our day off I had time to sit down, me and B.J (Bryant Johnson), one-on-one, and go over the plays a little bit. We went over the adjustments that we have to make. Then when I went back out on the field and they started blitzing I was able to pick up on it.”
How excited are you to work with Russ Grimm?
“It’s very exciting when you get the chance to work with somebody who has been in the same position and excelled at that position. They’re going to teach you whatever they know and help you reach that level. It’s definitely exciting. He’s been out there teaching us techniques, and showing us how to recover in situations that we might get beat on, so it has definitely been very beneficial.”
You mentioned during mini-camp that second-year guard Deuce Lutui has taken you under his wing. What advice has Deuce given you?
“He’s been a cool dude. He’s a very friendly guy. He’s been helping me out with the plays, and he definitely was one of the first guys that called me from the offensive line when I got drafted.”
In your short experiences so far, what is the best thing about being a rookie?
“I guess they expect you to make mistakes. There a little bit easier on you right now. If some of the vets make the same mistake I made, Coach Grimm will be all down their throat about it. I can make the mistake because there’s some baby in me, but that won’t last long.”
What do you think the worst part about being a rookie is?
“It hasn’t happened yet, but I’m sure these veterans have something planned for us. I don’t know maybe a rookie show or you have to carry the pads once (training) camp starts. I know something is going to happen.”
Where do you see the biggest difference in practice when you compare college to the NFL?
“At Penn State practices were two hours and fifteen minutes, two hours and thirty minutes long. Here it seems like practice is only an hour and five minutes max so far. The pace is definitely a lot quicker and we’re going full speed with just helmets on.”
Who are you most excited to face in the NFL?
“At defensive end, Peppers, Strahan, one of those two because they are considered the best. You want to go against the best to prove to yourself, and once you go against the best, and can beat the best, people start looking at you.”
