Richardson On The Block5th January, 2006 - 1:08 amNewsday - Quentin Richardson is available and teams around the N.B.A. are aware that the swingman and three-point gunner can be acquired via trade.
It's well-known throughout the league that the Knicks are trying to trade Richardson. Denver might be a possibility because Nuggets assistant GM Jeff Weltman drafted Richardson, and the Knicks are interested in backup point guard Earl Watson. But their salaries don't quite match this season, and even though both are signed for five more years Richardson's contract is valued at $42.9 million compared to $29 million for Watson, making it difficult for the Nuggets to take back that much money, according to one NBA personnel expert.

Knicks backup center Jerome James returned to practice Wednesday, but coach Larry Brown and a team spokesman declined to say whether his suspension would be lifted in time to permit him to take part in the Washington game Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

James was suspended indefinitely when, according to the team, he "was not prepared to practice" during the workout Brown conducted at 10 a.m. New Year's Day. Brown said he talked to James about the incident at Tuesday's optional practice and that he was pleased with the way James practiced Wednesday.

Although a team statement issued before Monday's game against Phoenix said James had been "suspended," it is unclear whether the Knicks plan to deduct $45,455 for each game James is suspended or not. Marc Fleisher, who represents James, said the collective bargaining agreement permits his client to practice while on suspension, but he was uncertain where the situation stands.

"I know nothing," Fleisher said. "The Knicks haven't informed us one way or the other. I've heard nothing from them as to their position and whether or not the suspension will continue."

Fleisher said the Knicks have not yet indicated how much the suspension will cost James. Asked if he expects to file a grievance, Fleisher said, "Until I know any of the details of what's going on -- and I haven't heard anything or seen anything in writing from the Knicks -- I'm going to have no comment."

James also declined to answer questions about the suspension after practice at the team's training facility. James said his conditioning is only 70 percent of what he would like it to be because of injuries, but he's ready to play.

Notes & quotes: Quentin Richardson (back spasms), Jamal Crawford (sprained left foot) and Antonio Davis (back spasms) all sat out practice Wednesday. Richardson is listed as questionable for Friday's game, and the other two are probable. However, Crawford indicated some doubt about his status because his foot is tender . . .

I read on Knicks forum that Q is quite injury prone, like he has back problems all the time.

They say that's why he isn't shooting so well in Knicks.
