If Leinart doesn't have a very good season to justify a restructuring next offseason, we better pray that Skelton is as good as many on this board felt he could be before being drafted!!!

maybe I have caught some Mitch-itis, but I have this feeling that Max Hall might turn out to be the better qB prospect

You might be right, but I really believe if the Redbirds put him on the PS he will be picked up by someone. :bang: Do the Cards keep 4 QB's?

I sure hope not... Max tended to urinate down his leg in most big games.

Doubt it. Seems like Whis likes to stock the PS fridge with DLs OLs and LBs.

It's cool to have a #3 QB with the potential to improved. Even if he just develops into a capable backup, he'll be a bargain on this contract.

Welcome to AZ, John.

In Hall and Skelton, you're dealing with 2 contrasting styles:

Skelton's the prototypical big guy with the cannon.

Hall's the smaller, mobile "cagey guy."

History has shown that either kind of guy can make it.

Question is - Given the current make-up of the Cardinal roster, the surrounding offensive cast and the style of football the coaches want to go with, can both QB's excel within that system and which of the two guys is likely to be the better?

I've often wondered what our offense would be like if led by a Jeff Garcia/Rich Gannon/Matt Hasselbeck type of QB. Last preseason, I thought Tyler Palko (who seemed to fit that mold) moved the team best of all the backups; yet - within the system and the players we had, the coaches evidently felt that his style of play wasn't good enough to get the job done.

Final point - We're dealing with question-marks here. Both Leinart and Anderson rode the pines for a while, and we don't have a recent body of work for either to know how much (if anything) they've learned or how much (if at all) they've improved. But that's a far cry from writing either of them off altogether - it's equally likely that they'll be fine as it is that they might fail. (Both have enough upside for us to get hopeful and excited about, so let's let the preseason play itself out without passing judgment prematurely).

The thing that sold me on John Skelton was the way he handled himself and the way he performed on the ESPN Draft Special. The fact that he has been staying on in Arizona to try to learn the playbook is another indication that this kid has his eyes on the brass rings. Hey, he could easily concede that he won't play much this year, if at all, so why not just go on vacation like almost everyone else? The answer is: this kid wants to get after it and he is taking nothing for granted. This approach is Fitz-esque. Man, it's just great to see the improved attitude of the Cardinals' players. They have reacted so well to Whiz, Lott and the coaching staff and at this point have taken the ownership of responsibility.

Watching all the QBs this pre-season will be very interesting. While Whiz will run the ball more in the regular season than he did last year, he will try to shape up the passing game in the pre-season in order to learn what he has in Leinart, Anderson, Skelton and Hall...and what kind of rhythm and chemistry they can generate with the WRs.

Well done of course...a few points...not too many kids over 6'5" from Texas wind up at Fordham unless they want to be Jesuit Priests.....Maybe some Vince Lombardi magic dust rubbed off on John...that is where Vince went too.

Some quick down-to-earth analysis on Skelton from FootballOutsiders' new annual:

John Skelton, ARI: Because of his ideal size (6-foot-6, 243 pounds) and raw arm strength, Skelton got a lot of press as an under-the-radar quarterback sleeper before the draft. He ended up dropping to the fifth round,
though, where Arizona picked him up. Why did he drop? Well, because he’s not all that good; he completed 59
percent of his passes at Fordham, and he was the first-team all-Patriot League quarterback exactly once. Guys
who play in lesser conferences need to scorch earth, not merely play pretty well.

He's going to look excellent on the sideline. The over/under on Mitch wondering allowed why Skelton isn't getting a shot as the starter or in sub packages is Week 12.

if he ever sees the field as a 5th round drafted QB, you would have to consider the pick a success. If he's even around in 3-4 years then, maybe, you may start to consider some PT possibilities.

10 Years of 5th round QBs:

Rhett Bomar
Nate Davis
John David Booty
Josh Johnson
Eric Ainge
Dennis Dixon
Jeff Rowe
Troy Smith
Ingle Martin
Omar Jacobs
Dan Orlovsky
Adrian McPherson
Craig Krenzel
Brian St. Pierre
Randi Fasani
Kurt Kittner
Brandon Doman
Craig Nall
Mike McMahon
A.J. Feeley
Tee Martin
Kevin Daft

I think that if John Skelton is still on an NFL roster by the end of his contract, that's a pretty good win. Honestly, based on this list, I hope he never sees the field for the Arizona Cardinals.

Too bad we didnt wait til the 6th to pick him so we could create the same list of R6 QBs and then hope we got the next Tom Brady. He is a project but you cant teach 6'6" 243lbs, So he has that going for him. It will be fun to see where he ends up.

Are you serious? Ten years of 6th round QBs:

Colt Brennan
Andre' Woodson
Jordan Palmer
Reggie McNeal
Bruce Gradkowski
Derek Anderson
Andy Hall
Josh Harris
Jim Sorgi
Jeff Smoker
Drew Henson
Brooks Bollinger
Kliff Kingsbury
J.T. O'Sullivan
Steve Bellisari
Josh Booty
Josh Heupel
Marc Bulger
Spergon Wynn
Tom Brady
Todd Husak
JaJuan Seider

Still like those odds? Maybe if you picked a 6th round QB every year, once every 12 years you'd find an above-average starter.
