Pulling off the reunited band thing can be tricky — especially when your lead singer and most recognizable member is deceased. That won't be stopping Queen though, as the Freddie Mercury-less band are going for the reunion gold.

It'll be tough to get anyone to fill Mercury's flashy shoes, but Queen have decided to tour with former Bad Company and Free lead singer Paul Rodgers. It'll be the band's first tour since Mercury's death in 1991.

Guitarist Brian May has confirmed touring plans via a statement on his own official website, saying "Barring accidents, Queen and Paul Rodgers will be on the road, pretty much for sure, around April 2005." The website also says that the spring tour would feature material from both the Queen and Rodgers' repertoire.

May said that the idea to reunite came to him after he and Rodgers performed together at the Fender 50th anniversary gig. "We were both amazed at the chemistry that was going on, " he wrote. "It seem[ed] blindingly obvious that there was something happening here."

May has apparently been extremely busy the last little while working on plans for the tour, including picking venues and deciding on setlists for the shows. Queen's last album, Innuendo, came out in 1991, although May, Roger Taylor (drummer) and John Deacon (bassist) got together to release a disc called Made In Heaven in 1995, which featured posthumous vocal tracks from Mercury.

I'm for one against this since Freddie Mercury was definitely "the face" of Queen and it serves them best to let his legacy w/Queen live rather than sake of gaining more money/commercialism.....

I saw the Dead Kennedys with a replacement Jello. Obviously not quite the same without him but it was cool being able to go see a band that I would have never had the opportunity to see otherwise.

The guys in Queen want to play their songs and they can't help the fact that the singer died. He might be the face but each member is just as responsible for every song as he is. If they want to go on tour good food them and this is a great opportunity for all their younger fans that missed out the first time to see them.

Freddie Murcury is irreplaceble, IMO. He was one helluva vocalist. Too bad he didn't get his teeth fixed before he kicked it, though. That's the only thing that will tarnish his legend.

Freddy Mercury IS irreplaceable. This is intriguing though.

Still, my wife and I have said for years that should they decide to use another front man, they should go with George Michael. I think he fits a little more and I think he can pull off the showmanship.

Though I hear Gary Cherone is available.

Brian May's an average guitarist. Freddy Mercury was Queen. I love Queen, I'm a big fan of Queen, and while it'll be nice to see the other guys together again, it's just not "Queen" without Freddy. He had the most amazing voice.

Freddy Mercury was Queen - but Wayward's idea for George Michael to replace him is a good one. Queen is one of my all-time favorite bands, just can't picture them without Freddy.

Can't agree with you here Vince. Brian May was an true innovator of the instrument. Maybe some consider him "average" because he's not flashy and doesn't play 100 MPH, but he always delivered unique and tastefull guitar parts that took Queen songs to new uncharted territories. His ability to produce lush tone and colors are an acheivement. He is one of the best because there is no other guitarist like him.

Perhaps I took the context of the article title literally "playing Freddie Mercury"...that Paul Rodgers will attempt to be Freddie Mercury......

True, Paul Rodgers was very talented when he was Free/Bad Company, however, to put anyone in the same sentence w/Freddie Mercury is a major injustice....

I've said before that I'm somewhat a "musical purist"...or what or as Mercury aptly put it in one of his song titles "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy", so if I the surviving members of Queen...I would change the name of the band (true they might all own rights to it)...then they should record a new studio album to support while going on tour instead of singing anything penned/composed by Freddie.... To me in some scale...it would be like The Beatles reuniting w/out John Lennon (with let's say someone else from their era trying to fill in for him and prior to George's death)...or Nirvana reforming w/out Kurt Cobain...or Alice-in-Chains reassembling w/out Layne Staley.... I guess my major gripe also is that most of the lyrics were written by Mercury..that noone should try to replicate it....I'm afraid that Rodgers will try to emulate Freddie as well..rather than to incorporate his own style......

True, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor are accomplished musicians in their own-right, and deserve an opportunity to showcase their talents in some form....but not at the stake of them for commerical gain to try to in essence replace a true icon.....which could tarnish their legacy....

There are other ways for them to gain more fans....Heck...they even did in
"Wayne's World"...... And if they actually do attempt "Bohemian Rhapsody" w/Rodgers on vocals...I can't even fathom that....

Sounds like they will be labeled "Queen and Paul Rodgers" which kinda works in protecting the legacy. I'm not really a Paul Rodgers fan but I think they should go for it.
Based on a performance several years ago at a tribute (forgot which one), I would prefer Queen and Annie Lennox.

Nickelback, The Flaming Lips Record Queen Covers
Friday May 06, 2005 @ 04:00 PM

It seems like this is just Queen's year. The band have launched a successful (sort of) reunion and it seems like every artist on the planet wants to record a Queen cover. One of Canada's own are the latest to jump on the bandwagon.
Nickelback have recently recorded a version of "We Will Rock You" for an upcoming Queen tribute album. The recording should hold some weight considering it features Queen guitarist Brian May.

And just when you thought it couldn't get weirder than My Chemical Romance and The Used covering "Under Pressure," The Flaming Lips have recorded a rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" for an upcoming covers record.

Lead vocalist Wayne Coyne told NME.com that although the band were at first unsure, they ultimately decided to "take on the behemoth that is 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'"

According to the singer, The Lips' version will be a bit sadder, a bit more intense and will feature "a big operatic flourish in the middle," much like the original.

The Flaming Lips' follow-up to 2002's Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, At War With The Mystics is due out sometime in January 2006.

Some songs just are NOT made to be redone.

Yeah... it's an outrage (I still havent gotten over that they plan on doing a reunion tour with Paul Rodgers).... No one should attempt anything performed by Freddie Mercury.....

Although... I must admit for the sake of intrigue I want to hear a Flaming Lips "take" of a Queen song... Just one "polar opposite" band to another....

If there is any band that can do Bohemian Rhapsody justice it will be Flaming Lips. Should be fun.

Queen To Tour North America Next Year, Sum 41, Flaming Lips Play On Tribute Album
Tuesday July 05, 2005 @ 04:00 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

Brian May

Perhaps to teach other British bands a thing or two about the proper way to wear a catsuit, pomp-rockers Queen will begin a full-scale tour of North America next spring.

Billboard.com reports the rock band will play Aruba, Tokyo and the New York and Los Angeles areas later this year. Free and Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers will continue to replace the deceased Freddie Mercury on both tours and sings on a live album, recorded in England, to be released in September, as well as on a DVD set to come out in October. Dates for the spring tour have not yet been announced.

To celebrate Queen's legacy, a number of musicians have collaborated on a tribute album. Killer Queen will be released on August 2 and will include two covers of "Bohemian Rhapsody," recently voted the second best British song ever.

Here is the track listing of Killer Queen:

* Gavin DeGraw — "We Are The Champions"
* Jason Mraz — "Good Old Fashioned Loverboy"
* Flaming Lips — "Bohemian Rhapsody"
* Eleven featuring Josh Homme— "Stone Cold Crazy"
* Rooney — "Death On Two Legs"
* Jon Brion — "Play The Game"
* Shinedown — "Tie Your Mother Down"
* Joss Stone — "Under Pressure"
* Los Lobos — "Sleepin' On The Sidewalk"
* Be Your Own Pet — "Bicycle Race"
* Ingram Hill — "'39"
* Breaking Benjamin — "Who Wants To Live Forever"
* Sum 41 — "Killer Queen"
* Antigone Rising — "Fat Bottomed Girls"
* Constantine Maroulis featuring the Las Vegas cast of We Will Rock You — "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Queen concert to become tribute

Tens of thousands are expected at the concert
Rock band Queen have invited emergency services personnel who dealt with the London bombings to their Hyde Park concert as a gesture of thanks.

Queen frontman Paul Rodgers said he wanted Friday's concert - postponed in the wake of the attacks - to become a tribute to their work.

Guitarist Brian May called them heroes for "getting London's wheels turning again".

The concert is expected to be attended by some 85,000 people.

'Extraordinary response'

It was supposed to be held last Friday, but was postponed for a week in light of the London bombings.

Rodgers added: "We feel it is fitting to thank London's emergency services for their extraordinary response in dealing with the effects of the bombing attacks and to celebrate the historical resilience of Londoners in their response to yet another atrocity."

Rodgers, the former singer of the 1970s band Free, has been singing in place of Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991.

Guitarist Brian May said: "We were away playing a concert in Germany and arrived back Thursday morning to see all this going on. We were unbelievably shocked and saddened.

"The heroes that day, and since then, are the police and emergency services coming together as one, calmly and bravely dealing with the tragedy and getting London's wheels turning again. We'd like to offer an appreciation."

It will be the first time Queen have played in Hyde Park in 29 years.

They will be joined by Razorlight, Justin and Dan Hawkins from The Darkness and comedian Peter Kay.

Queen and Paul Rodgers book full North American tour

November 30, 2005
by Jon Zahlaway
liveDaily.com

Weeks after playing a pair of sold-out U.S. showcases, Queen guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers have unveiled plans for a six-week North American tour.

The veteran rockers are set to launch the 23-date run with a March 3 show in Miami, and will touch down at arenas throughout the U.S.; a pair of Canadian dates are also planned, including an April 13 finale in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Tickets for the tour's stops in Washington, DC; the Chicago area; Milwaukee; the Phoenix area; Seattle; and Portland, OR, are scheduled to hit the box office Saturday (12/3), and all of the remaining dates are due to go on sale by Dec. 17, according to a press release. Details are included in the itinerary shown below.

More shows may be added, as a spokesperson said earlier this year that the group was planning to play "about 30 dates" during the outing.

Billed as "Queen + Paul Rodgers," the group will perform a mix of Queen material and songs from Rodgers' former bands, according to a press release. Joining May, Taylor and Rodgers on stage will be bassist Danny Miranda (ex-Blue Oyster Cult), guitarist Jamie Moses (Brian May Band) and keyboardist Spike Edney.

Queen bassist John Deacon is "supportive of his bandmates," but has retired from touring, according to a statement.

Earlier this year, Queen + Paul Rodgers mounted a sold-out, 32-date tour of European arenas. That run included a May 9 stop at England's Sheffield Arena, which recently yielded a two-disc audio set, titled "Return of the Champions," and a companion DVD.

Hollywood Records plans to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Queen classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" with the release of a special anniversary DVD and CD of the album that spawned that hit, "A Night at the Opera." The revamped version of the disc--which was first released in the U.S. on Dec. 7, 1975--will be available "shortly," according to a press release.

Prior to this year's Queen + Paul Rodgers outing, Queen last toured in 1986, before late frontman Freddie Mercury began showing symptoms of AIDS. The singer died of the disease in 1991.

Last year, Rodgers sang with May and Taylor during Queen's induction into the U.K. Music Hall of Fame and at a concert in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster guitar.

"I was always against the idea of putting someone in there trying to impersonate Freddie in any way," May said in a statement. "Then suddenly I'm looking at this guy who doesn't in any sense try to take the place of Freddie. He's nothing like Freddie because he comes from his own place musically and we can reinterpret these songs with someone who understands us--the songs would mean something new."

"There was a natural chemistry between us when we performed together in London," Rogers added. "The idea took hold for us to do something together after that, and the momentum has taken on a life of its own."

The surviving members of Queen have played together at a few events since Mercury's death, including a 1992 tribute to Mercury and at the band's 2001 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Last month, Queen + Paul Rodgers played sold-out shows in New Jersey and Los Angeles.

"It was more than enough to persuade us that it was the right time to return for a lengthier period of dates," May and Taylor said in a statement. "And it is going to be great to be back in some of our favorite cities."

I've always liked Paul Rodgers but he doesn't strike me as having the vocal range Mercury had. All Right Now, Shooting Star, great songs, but not as challenging as Queen songs.
