From watching the replay, it looked like Hightower gained the first down on the play, and then they called a penalty on Gandy as a dead ball foul. Wouldn't that mean we'd of had a 1st and and goal from the 16 instead of a 4th down?

I see what you're saying, but following that line of thinking it'd be 1st and 25 (10 yards because we reset the downs plus 15 for the personal foul).

I don't know about the official ruling, though. I assume they got it right, though.

I thought the same thing but according to the stats he was short of the first down.
On the NFL site it said it was 3rd and 8 and they gave Hightower a 7 yard run there.

Also with the first down it would have been a 1st and goal to go from the 16.

I'm not sure I follow the 25 yard penalty. If they said the foul was after the play, we'd have a first down by getting to the 1 yard line, then they'd tack on the penalty of 15 yards for the personal foul. Either way, the most they could penalize us would be the 15 yards. Although, I have to be wrong on this as you'd think Whis would have blown a gasket if the refs screwed it up that bad.

Ahh, that explains it. Just another horrible spot by the refs in that game. Sure glad we won because I'd have a serious bad taste in my mouth.

In a weird way I think that Mike Gandy took a shot and P Willis in retaliation to that huge hit Willis put on Pope in the endzone during the previous series. It was a dirty shot but it kind of told Willis that our guys are going to look out for each other and we won't back down.

I doubt that's really the case but I always like to think that guys have some motive to do stupid things.

I was thinking the same exact thing!

Yes at least two of us made the same comment in the game thread yesterday but it appears they ruled Hightower short of the first down. He got pushed forward by the pile so maybe they ruled it short on that.

That's why in the 2nd half when Whiz challenged a spot I was happy since I think he should have challenged the one on Hightowers run.

Dumb play Gandy.
