Did you ever see Montana, Elway, Marino, Young, Kelly etc in person come through SDS in their prime?

I remember leaving early from a seeming blowout win against Montana and the 49ers only to be driving home and lose.

Yup.

But with Elway, Kelly and Marino being AFC I don't think they made it through but two or three times, if that.

Denver games were especially bad. And that 44-0 game - or something along those lines - was probably the low point of SDS..

Edit - it was 37-0

Saw Young once in the Classic 24-23 comeback in 1988 that puts us at 6-4.

Saw Elway pulverize is like 36-0 back in 89 or 90.

Saw Marino pulverize us 38-10 or something like that on a Sunday Night Footbsll game in Jimmy Johnson’s first year.

Living in NYC vic., we had season tickets to about 30 years of Giant games: Got to see Charley Conerly, YA Tittle, Phil Sims, Jeff Hostetler on the Giant side, Charlie Johnson, Sam Etcheverry and Jim Hart on the Giant side, along with CBs Eric Barnes and Spider Lockhart, LB's LT, Banks, Carson etc. and DLs Grier and Robustelli.

Indicative of the Bad Luck Cardinals in those days was an almost magical Cardinal 4Q comeback which put the Cards ahead with under a minute to play. My son, Stu called me to offer congrats. "Don't jinx us", I screamed into the phone just as a Giant return guy grabbed the kickoff and returned it 83 yds for the winning TD.

Man that's still tough for me to watch. I don't think people grasp the impact Lomax' hip injury had on this franchise. That highlight is from 1988, we finished 7-7 that year with Lomax at QB, 7-9 overall, and he at the age of 29, never played another game for the Cards.

Roy Green was 31, he had 1000 yards that year and never got to 800 again before moving on. Lomax and the hip injury completely derailed the franchise for years to come.

And then of course we have Rosenbach who looks like a potential franchise QB and he gets hurt too.

We were 7-4, having just beat the Giants and Niners IN THEIR HEYDAY and then Lomax missed the next three games and we bottomed out.

That was a nice introduction for all us Az fans to what we’d come to know and loathe about the Cards.

I was at that game

Lomax was hit while throwing a TD pass ( JT Smith [edit: it was Roy Green] i beleive, who took a 12 yard cross, made some guys miss went 40+) IIRC, Lomax was hit late as well.

I took my then girlfriend/ now wife to the Cards / 49er game where they came roaring back to win on the final play

also saw Steve Young knocked out by Aeneas Williams. I was certain the Cards would win that game, but a unknown name Jeff Garcia came in and played really well and the 49ers won -- thus proving that "the Cardinals make backup QBs look like all-stars" thing goes wayyyy back.

I had to google it but yes 7-4 after the Giants game, Lomax missed the next 2 games, losses to the Oilers and Eagles, then came back the team finished 7-9 and he never played another game.

In 1995 I was working part time at a company that did interactive sports, one of the guys there had worked for the NFL, he assisted them managing the cords during filming(power cords for the cameras IIRC) so he'd played college football and then was on the field during games doing that stuff.

When I told him I was a Cards fan he told me a story about meeting Lomax around 92 or 93. I'd said I never understood how Lomax went from playing to done that quickly and he said you can't believe the guy he was like a 95 year old man when I met him his hip was so bad. Turned out it was just a few months after Lomax had a total hip replacement surgery which per Google would have been 1991. From what I've read since his hip was severely arthritic, he basically played his last 2 seasons in constant pain getting shots so he could play.

Go back to 1984 he was so good and looked to have such a brilliant career ahead of him, such a sad ending.

An aside on just how good that 84 Cardinal team was, they played the Bears in St Louis and beat them 38-21, a year later the Bears won the Superbowl, they had largely the same team in 84 but the Cards put up 38 points on them. Lomax, Green, Tilley, Ottis Anderson, Stump Mitchell. That team was torn apart by drug use and the 84 team got hosed on the final game of the season loss at RFK to Washington and just never really recovered.

88 was the year it looked like maybe we were finally putting that offense back together and then Lomax retired.

People that never saw him play in his prime check out this youtube of the Bears game.

You can see not only what a great deep ball thrower he was, but that he was a much better runner than people realized.

What could have been if he'd stayed healthy

I have one of those arthritic hips...cant imagine trying to actually try and play competitive football with it now... must have been good shots he was getting

I saw Steve Youngs career ended by a hit by Aeneas Williams and I think JJ McClesky.
Yup, I was there for that. Then had to watch Garrison Hearst fly down the sideline to save the day for the Niners.

It's not just that Rosie got hurt, it's that he lost his nerve to play after he came back. Was such a bummer.

it's even worse than you remember... it was Lawrence Phillips who flew down the sideline in his ONLY good game of his entire career.
