Question for those with Cox or other cable internet

How do you connect your cable modem to your computer? Via ethernet cable or USB.

I use USB because I could never get my ethernet connection to work between the modem and computer.

The reason I ask is that I am thinking of getting a wireless router for my laptop, but the routers don't seem to have a USB out, only an ethernet for the wired connection.

Are there any special tricks I'm missing, or maybe its just my computer.

I use Cox and have the ethernet connection working fine.

That's weird that it doesn't work for you, shouldn't be too hard. Did you do the Cox install disk?

Yup. I'll try again. Maybe I have a bad ethernet port on my computer

The USB connection is slower than the Ethernet connection.

Try this:

After you have everything hooked up go to:

Start

click on "run"

when the run dialog comes up type "cmd" (no quotes)

When the DOS screen comes up type "ipconfig" (no quotes)

Now type "ipconfig /release" (no quotes)

Now "ipconfig /renew" (no quotes)

Type ipconfig one more time and if it worked you should have an IP address

Hopefully it will solve your problem

I don't have cox. Do they do static ip or not.

Check for any activity on you nic. Is there a green light and how about an orange blinking on also??

You forgot the last step:

Type "ipconfig/woo-woo!"

All Cox @ home setups are DHCP.
For static you have to go to business service $$$$$$

Also if you have XP you can go to the network connections, right click on the network card and click repair.


If you don't get an address double check your connections.

I don't know why but from my experience with Cox, the "repair connection" never works. I always have to renew the lease manually

Thanks for your tips guys - I stuck with it and resolved the ID10T error and got it working. Stupid me didnt realize I had to turn off/turn on the modem before switching connection types.

But Wow, y'all were right about the speed! I've never gotten above 1.5 mbps thru USB, but check this out!

Yea, sometime my setup just stops working. A quick power cycle of the modem and router will restore the connection.


I got 2.1M on the speed test, but time of day (usage load) I'm sure has an effect. Also now that I think about it my son is probably playing on battle.net in the other room.
