Dumb question.... When is expansion draft and if Suns draft European prospect and keep him overseas, do Suns still need to put prospect on protected list if he's not signed at time of expansion draft? I'm not as high on European players but if Suns draft 1 and could sign Free Agent.

i am not sure, but I think that if a player is over seas, he does not need to be protected. We only have the rights to him, and he wouldnt be on the roster or under contract. Think of it as him still being a draft pick. The expansion team cannot choose to take a future pick from you.

That is my view on it at least.

I don't have an answer for that question, but I do have a different question. How many players to the Suns have to make available? The Suns should only have 11 players under contract on their roster going into next season unless they re-sign some of the vets:

Big Jake
Little Jake (once he's re-signed)
Stoudemire
Outlaw
Googs
Marion
JJ
Penny
Jacobsen
Marbury
Draft Pick

So I guess my question is: do they have to make player available even if they don't have enough players signed to fill their own roster?

last expansion draft I believe you were able to protect 8 players....and if one of your remaining players was picked...you could protect another

However, they have not announced the new rules, which I think might be different because of more teams and only one expansion team...

My recollection is that each team is allowed to protect some number of players, like 8, and all the rest of their roster is available for the expansion team(s) to pick from. They may be limited to picking at most one player from any one team.

I know that Penny has played well at times this year (when he wasn't injured) and he really helped this team have the season that it did, but if we have the chance to get rid of a contract like his without having to take anything back then I think we need to at least try by making him unprotected.

Also, when is the enpansion draft? Is it after this season is over or before this season begins?

The Suns will most certainly leave Penny Hardaway unprotected. That is unless they feel there is absolutely no chance of him being taken. And that plan might be better to leave someone else unprotected... someone whose feelings might not be hurt.
